A rare Mintons teapot and cover designed by Sir Henry Cole, under the pseudonym Felix Summerly 's Art Manufacturers, shouldered body, the spout cast with a lion head, the handle with mountain goat terminal, the cover with a ram's head finial, glazed creamy yellow, unsigned, chip and hairline to cover, 16.5cm. high (2) Literature Paul Atterbury & Maureen Batkin The Dictionary of Minton, Antique Collector's Club, page 260 for an illustration of Cole's designs and also of this teapot. Catalogue notes Sir Henry Cole (1802-1882) was a civil servant who spent his life championing the arts, in particular design, being involved in the organisation of the 1851 Great Exhibition, Crystal Palace and later in 1853 he became the first director of the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria & Albert Museum. Cole was also a director of Summerly's Art Manufacturers and using the Felix Summerly pseudonym designed this tea set that won the silver medal from the Royal Society of Arts in 1846. The cups and saucers from the service appear to have become a staple design for Minton being produced over a long period but the scarcity of known examples of the teapot suggest that it was produced in limited quantities.

Victoria (1819-1901). Queen of Great Britain & Ireland, 1837-1901. Vignetted cabinet card portrait of John Brown in profile [by George Washington Wilson, Aberdeen], c. 1870s, albumen print, inscribed in blue ink by Queen Victoria in lower blank area of image, 'J. Brown - the Queen's truest friend', set in a contemporary silver-plated desk frame with plush-lined backing and original inlaid hinged morocco case with fastener by Edwards & Jones, 161 Regent Street, [London], 19 x 15 cm overall QTY: (1)NOTE:Richard Assheton Cross, 1st Viscount Cross, (1823-1914), was born in Red Scar, near Preston, Lancashire. A lawyer and banker, Cross was a Conservative member of the House of Commons from 1857 to 1862 and from 1868 (when he defeated Gladstone for a Lancashire constituency) until 1886. In 1874 Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli appointed him home secretary. The Cross Act of 1875 empowered municipalities to buy and demolish slums and to build housing for rental. In the same year Cross carried through Parliament the Factory Act, regulating the employment of women and children in textile mills; the Public Health Act, a comprehensive sanitary code; and two statutes reinterpreting Gladstone’s trade-union legislation of 1871. Cross left office with Disraeli in 1880, served again as home secretary in the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury’s brief ministry of 1885-86, was created viscount in 1886, and held the secretaryship for India from that year until 1892. From 1895 to 1900 he was lord privy seal.'Cross was a fellow of the Royal Society, a bencher of the Inner Temple, and an ecclesiastical commissioner, and was keenly interested in the affairs of the church. His honours included, besides the viscountcy, the GCB (1880) and GCSI (1892). He was among the small band of her ministers to whom Queen Victoria gave her close personal friendship, and he was a trustee of more than one royal marriage settlement' (ODNB online). Cross may now be best remembered as one of the country's outstanding home secretaries but some of the material offered here (lots 208-227), by direct descent from the family, reveals his close relationship with Queen Victoria. He is mentioned frequently in her journals (online) from 1877 until 1900, often as a guest at the royal residences of Balmoral, Windsor and Osborne.John Brown (1826-1883) was a Scottish gillie and a favourite servant of Queen Victoria. Though unliked by most other members of the royal family the exact nature of his relationship with Victoria has been the subject of great speculation. Brown became a strong friend and supporter of Victoria after the death of Prince Albert in 1861 and she was known to have given him numerous gifts as well as creating two medals for him, the Faithful Servant Medal and the Devoted Service Medal, both of which he is seen wearing in this portrait.

Lot 214

Victoria (1819-1901). Queen of Great Britain & Ireland, 1837-1901. Autograph note on personal stationery, Balmoral Castle, c. 1880, a note relating to a gift, '1 of 7 Asseguis sent the Queen by General Crealock to whom they had been surrendered by Zulu Chiefs', embossed stationery with monogram and crest at head, slightly dust-soiled, one page, 8vo, contemporary wooden picture frame, glazed, 22 x 15.5 cm overallQTY: (1)NOTE:Richard Assheton Cross, 1st Viscount Cross (1823-1914), British statesman and Conservative politician who served as Home Secretary 1874-1880 & 1885-1886.Lieutenant-General Henry Hope Crealock (1831-1891) was a British soldier, artist and author. In the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 he commanded the first division, and for his services was created CMG and received a medal with a clasp. This would appear to be a wall display note for the artefact mentioned. An assegai was a Zulu weapon, usually a light spear or javelin made up of a wooden handle and an iron tip. Queen Victoria clearly became familiar with assegais and mentions them a number of times in her journal  between 1879 and 1891. The Royal Collection Trust has six assegais sent to the queen by Sir Bartle Frere in 1878 (RCIN 67872).

Lot 246

Swindon Town Football Club. A Swindon Town Anglo-Italian Cup winner's medal, 1970, 18 ct gold, the obverse engraved with the trophy flanked by enamel Union and Italian flags, the verso engraved "I Torneo Anglo-Italiano Anglo-Italian Competition 1970, Esso Petroleum Co.", hallmarked 750, 31.5 grams, 38 mm diameter, contained in original fitted box, cushion stamped 'Faraone, Milano'.QTY: (1)NOTE:Very rare Swindon Town winner's medal from the inaugural Anglo-Italian Cup competition of 1970. The Anglo-Italian Cup was a European competition between English and Italian clubs, and came about as the winners of the Football League Cup, from 1967 received a place in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, but UEFA rules excluded Third Division winners of the League Cup, i.e. Swindon Town in 1969. As a way of compensating League Cup winners Swindon's exclusion from the Fairs Cup, the Anglo-Italian Cup was inaugurated the following year, with six English and six Italian clubs in the competition, with the teams with the highest points from each country contesting the final, which was played on 28 May 1970 in Naples between Napoli and Swindon.Swindon were winning 2-0 and when Arthur Horsfield scored the third goal for Swindon in the 63rd minute, disgruntled home fans began throwing rocks and bottles onto the pitch, and following two pitch invasions, the referee abandoned the game in the 79th minute, when Swindon were awarded the trophy.

Bridgman authority and Curator Emerita, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, for confirming the authenticity of this work on the basis of photographs.Born in Alabama, USA, Frederick Bridgman's early training was as a draughtsman and engraver for the American Banknote Company. Visiting Paris in 1866, he worked for a time in the atelier of the Orientalist master, Jeon-Leon Gérome, at the École des Beaux-Arts. Often referred to as 'the American Gérôme', Bridgman's early work reflects the master's precise draughtsmanship and smooth finishes, although his palette would soften over the years, his style becoming broader and more impressionistic.Bridgman's first visit to North Africa came in 1872, remaining there for the next five years, where he divided his time between Egypt and Algiers. As well as producing hundreds of preparatory sketches, he also took numerous photographs, and amassed a large collection of objects, costumes and architectural pieces, which cluttered his Paris studio and served as props for his paintings. Bridgman was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salons, notably the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon of the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français, as well as at the Royal Academy, and Suffolk Street Gallery in London. His work was shown at the Exposition Universelle of 1878, 1889 and 1900, receiving a silver medal at each of the exhibitions. He was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur in 1878 and was made Officier in 1907. Bridgman retained his ties with his home country and held a number of exhibitions with accompanying sales in New York, the first of which was held in 1890.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 186

A FRENCH GILT BRASS AND GLASS-BEAD HIGHLIGHTED PORCELAIN MANTEL CLOCK GARNITURE ACHILLE BROCOT, PARIS, WITH PANELS BY BARLUET ET CIE, CRIEL AND MONTEREAU, CIRCA 1890The circular two train eight-day gong striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum incorporating Brocot type regulation to suspension, the backplate stamped with oval star-centred trademark AB over serial number 2164 15.5, the circular cream ground porcelain dial decorated with butterfly inhabited silver and gilt floral spray incorporating yellow/orange glass bead applied infill to the wings of the insect within Roman numeral cartouche chapter ring, with blued steel hands within canted brass bezel, the break-arch case with surmount cast as a twin handled urn resting on scrolls and with four foliate bud finials to angles over moulded cornice and front inset with a concave-topped porcelain panel beneath the dial decorated with two butterflies incorporating toned glass bead applied infill to the wings set within gilt and silvered flowering foliage, the rear of the panel with an underglaze trademark mark B & CIE, DEPOSE, CRIEL ET MONTEREAU and inscribed in puce script 4576, Papillon, on skirt base with generous gilt and silvered acanthus cast top moulding and toupe feet; the garniture side pieces each formed as a twin handled urn with pineapple finial over conforming bead decorated butterfly inhabited flowering foliage to the shouldered ovoid porcelain body and leaf cast foot. The clock 34cm (13.5ins) high, 18cm (7ins) wide, 13cm (5ins) deep; the side pieces 25.5cm (10ins) high, 11.5cm (4.5ins) wide. Provenance: Private collection, East Midlands. Achille Brocot is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development as born in 1817 and died in 1878. The Museums Victoria (Australia) website notes that Achille patented several improvements in clock mechanism escapements, and invented the 'Brocot Suspension', an adjustable pendulum spring which enabled time keeping to be regulated by altering the length of the pendulum suspension spring by a key turned in the dial. He also introduced a jewelled deadbeat escapement, sometimes called a visible escapement as it was often mounted in the middle of the dial. Achille was awarded a first class medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1855, and in 1856 was appointed Treasurer to La Société des Horlogers in Paris. He published a "Calculation of the Wheels by Approximation" in 1862. His sons Achille and Paul continued the business following Achille senior's death 1878. The firm was taken over by rival clock maker Gustave Gibaudet in 1889.The origins of the porcelain elements can be traced to back to Louis-Martin Lebeuf (1792-1854) and Jean Baptiste Garften Millet (1797-1875) who purchased the combined faience factories of Criel and Montereaux in 1841 (which had been under the same ownership since 1819). They employed George Vernon and his son of the same name as art directors who were subsequently succeeded by Henry Félix Anatoie Barluet at some point after 1849. Barluet went on to create a worker city to house his employees, however the Criel factory was sadly destroyed by fire in 1895 leaving the Montreaux factory to continue alone in the production of pottery and soft paste porcelain well into the 20th century. The porcelain sections of the current lot are unusual in that they incorporate applied clustered coloured glass bead infill to the wings of the butterflies which catches and reflects light in such a way as to bring the insects to life. This is due to the intensity of the reflected light changing as the angle from which they are viewed varies, and is particularly effective when lit straight-on by a single source. This scarce form of decoration is normally only seen on a select few carriage clock cases with two examples illustrated in Roberts, Derek CARRIAGE and other Travelling CLOCKS pages 158-59 (Figs 9.55 and 9.56). The presence of the Barluet et Cie mark on the back of the porcelain front panel of the current lot would appear to confirm the source of these unusual bead-decorated panels.Condition Report: Movement appears complete and all original. The going train will just about run and the clock will strike however a gentle clean/service is required. The dial has a relatively faint hairline crack across the dial passing from XI to V otherwise is in good condition with the insect missing only one or two tiny glass beads. The frieze panel is in good condition with faults limited to a few beads missing to the upper tip of the blue butterfly wing and the right-hand tip of the blue/orange butterfly wing. Case otherwise is in good original condition with light to moderate wear to the gilt and silvered details and overall slight mellowing to the lacquered brass finishes. The side pieces have a few beads missing in places and the finishes are a little more oxidised than those of the clock otherwise are in good original condition.Clock has a pendulum but no winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer
