Clayton, commanding 280 Field Company, Royal Engineers, comprising Military Cross, the reverse engraved 1944, 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence and War Medal, swing mounted, in a glazed display frame. Footnote:- There is no evidence that this group was awarded to Major Clayton, other than an attached typed note stating "Major Clayton landed on Normandy at "H" ninus 5 minutes on 6th June 1944 (D.Day). His objective was to deal with underwater obstacles on "KING BEACH", of which he did so. For his courage in leading this assault he received the Military Cross"

KAYE, 1/RL.BERKS:R:, comprising Egypt Medal with clasp SUAKIN 1885, Khedives Star1884-6 and Delhi Durbar Medal 1911, bar mounted Footnote: - Egypt Medal and Bar confirmed on the roll. James Levett Kaye was born in 1861.He was educated at Revered C Fendall's School at Windlesham and Winchester College. Kaye was appointed to Sandhurst in 1880, being commissioned into the Royal Berkshire regiment in 1882, joining the 1st Bn. He saw service in Egypt taking part in the Suakin Expedition in 1885. The roll note that he was seconded to the Indian Army, (5th Bengal Cavalry). He then served in the Political Department and was resident at Mewar from 1911 until 1916. He died after on years retirement in 1917 CONDITION REPORT: . Egypt Medal correctly engraved. Condition for all GVF

A Rare Boer War/First World War Group of Nursing Medals and Badges, awarded to Nursing Sister Ellen Mary Smyth of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve, comprising Queen's South Africa Medal and King's South Africa Medal named NURSING SISTER E.M.SMITH, 1914 Star named MISS E.M.SMYTH, Q.A.I.M.N.S.R., British War Medal and Victory Medal (MID) named SISTER E.M.SMYTH, all with the corresponding miniature group , QSA, KSA and 1914 Star Trio swing mounted as worn , also Royal Red Cross 2nd Class (George V) in case of issue, Queen Alexandra's Boer War Cross, the reverse engraved ALEXANDRA, FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY, 1899-1902, in case of issue, Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve silver cape badge hallmarked Birmingham 1915, and Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve white metal cape badge, the reverse numbered 668, together with a photocopy of her obituary, two volumes of With the Flag to Pretoria, one volume of After Pretoria, the Guerilla War and two magazines (20)Footnote:- Mary Ellen Smyth born 4th April 1891. A founding member of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Service Reserve, she had served during the Boer War and was awarded the Queen's and King's South Africa Medals. When the Boer War had finished, she chose to stay in South Africa for a further two years, for which she was personally decorated by Queen Alexandra. At the outbreak of the First World War she was called away from private nursing in France to serve her country at home and in France. Landing in France & Flanders on 12th November 1914, serving there until 12th November 1916 when she resigned to take a rest. Re-joined as a sister at Belmont Hospital in Surrey, which was used for Prisoners of War. After the war she established a hospital for diabetics at York in the early the 1920's. Miss Smyth retired after the end of the Second World War and passed away in Harrogate in 1988. Mentioned in Despatches by Haig, announced in the London gazette on 4th January 1917. Invested with the Royal Red Cross 2nd Class at the County Hall in Warwick by the Lord Lieutenant on 29th March 1921. It had been announced in the London Gazette on 9th April 1919. CONDITION REPORT: . Commissioned into the Royal Naval Air Service on 19th November 1914. He earned his pilot's wings in a Wright Biplane at Beatty School, Hendon on 1st February 1915. Discharged from his commission on 6th March 1919 due to being unfit. R.F.R.; together with: recipient's MID certificate (pasted onto card); copy of London Gazette page (30.11.1917); various photos of recipient including wedding; Certificates of Service and Demobilization etc; Comrades Lodge Buffaloes medal 1925; photo of Victory Parade Winchester Barracks, RA, for the end of the Boer War; "photo" of image of "HM Cruiser Squadron in a Gale in the Bay of Biscay October 15th and 16th 1902 to Portsmouth" showing five identified vessels.Footnote:- Charles Frederick Clark was born on 16th May 1882 in Somerset. By trade he was a Blacksmiths Striker. Clark joined the Royal Marines at Bristol on 5th November 1900, signing on for 12 years.Clark served on board H.M.S Porpoise and took part in the expedition to Somaliland 1902-04, serving there in 1903. Transferred to the reserves on 5th November 1912, he was recalled to active service on 5th August 1914. Clark landed at Ostend on 26th August 1914, was at Dunkirk and took part in the Defence of Antwerp. He then saw service in the Mediterranean before landing in France in mid 1916. His service papers make mention of an action against an enemy submarine in May 1917 and he was awarded a Mention in Despatches for this action. Unfortunately, this section of his service papers are very faint. Clark survived the war, transferred to the RFR and was awarded an LSGC in February 1922.

R.A.F., comprising Distinguished Flying Medal, 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star with clasp FRANCE AND GERMANY, Defence Medal and War Medal, together with the miniatures, photographs, newspaper cuttings and his Observer's and Air Gunner's Flying Log Book (No.10 Squadron) with entries from 26-9-42 to 27-1-48, which records his many successful raids over GermanyFootnote:- Albert (Nobby) Larkins flew in Halifax bombers with No. 10 Squadron, and was awarded the DFM for his efforts during a very successful bombing raid of a munitions plant near Berlin. His aircraft came under heavy anti-aircraft fire being holed a number of times, and with the bomb aimer, George Craft, being hit in the head with shrapnel.

Recalled in August 1914, he was wounded on 27th July 1916 and again on 5th of October 1917. Smith survived the war and was discharged in 1919; a Single Victory Medal, to 301685 PTE.P.J. HARVERSON, DURH.L.I.; a Princess Mary 1914 Christmas Tin, lacking contents (5)

A Second World War MM Group of Eight Medals, awarded to 4614146 SJT.J.H.PIERCY K.O.Y.L.I. (later Warrant Officer 2nd Class Somerset Light Infantry), comprising Military Medal, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and General Service Medal 1918-62 with clasp MALAYA (naming officially corrected), court mounted, in a glazed display frame.Footnote: - The MM was announced in the London Gazette on 24th January 1946. 'On 1 May 45, SJT Piercy's platoon was engaged first with clearing Hellb Wood, 9145 and later in capturing the village of Potrau 9046. The Coy had been under observed enemy mortar and small arms fire throughout the day and at about 1600hrs immediately before the final assault on Potrau, Sjt Piercy's platoon came under very accurate and heavy M.G fire. This NCO at once rallied his platoon and pushed forward with all speed. Throughout the whole day's action he was prominent in leading every assault and in particular personally cleared a house in the village, capturing two snipers while under fire himself from two other houses. This NCOs complete disregard for his own personal safety, his gallantry and initiative were an inspiration to all ranks and by his loyal and courageous conduct he was largely responsible for a successful engagement.The events of 1 May are typical of Sjt Piercy's consistent gallantry and initiative. He has served with the battalion in the C.M.F and B.L.A, and his outstanding courage in action has set an example of the finest order to his men' CONDITION REPORT: .
