British Academic Medal, yellow metal d.46mm: Robert William Dale Memorial Medal issued by King Edward VI School, Birmingham in 1899. This heavy piece weighs 61.4g and is struck in 18ct gold. Robert William Dale was a Congregationalist minister, who died in 1895. This medal indicates that he was 'Bailiff' of King Edward School, which possibly means that he was bailiff of the King Edward's School Birmingham Trust, a charitable organisation set up to provide scholarships for less privileged children. Perhaps this medal marks the foundation of the Trust, or served as an award to a particularly generous donor. Otherwise this may have been a school 'reward to simple piety' as described in the Latin legend, a tremendously expensive prize. EF
