A GREAT WAR TRIO OF MEDALS TO PRIVATE W.R. WYLLIE, (QUEEN'S OWN) ROYAL WEST KENT REGIMENT comprising the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (all S-465. Pte. W.R. Wyllie. R.W. Kent. R.), officially impressed, bar mounted for wearing; together with research suggesting that William Ralston Wyllie (1868-1949) had previously served with the 5th Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers before re-enlisting on 3rd September 1914, at the age of 46 (he claimed to be 44). Then living at Bromley he was placed into the 8th Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment and landed at Boulogne in August 1915. He was sentenced to forty-two days field punishment for being drunk and disorderly in April 1917, and in October of that year he reported sick and was diagnosed with myalgia and neurosis. This led to him being sent back to Britain and on 31st May 1918 he was medically discharged. During his period of active overseas service he is likely to have fought with his Battalion at the Battles of Loos, 1915; Delville Wood, 1916; Vimy Ridge (Arras offensive), 1917; Pilkem Ridge, 1917; and Langemarck, 1917.

Note: 18879 Private Montague Groves, 1st Bn Dorsetshire Regiment, the son of Thomas William and Caroline Groves, of Chetnole, Sherborne, Dorset, died on 29th September 1918, at the age of 20. He is buried with honour at Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery.

BOYD, ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE comprising the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, with single clasp 'North Africa 1942-43', Pacific Star, Italy Star, and War Medal 1939-45, unnamed as issued, bar mounted for wearing, with offical medal entitlement slip; together with the accompanying medal ribbon strips. Note (1): 1290787 Sergeant George Patrick Boyd, 61 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, the son of George and Edith Elizabeth Boyd of Sandwich, Kent, was killed in action on the 15th October 1944, aged 24 years. He is buried with honour at the Hanover War Cemetery. Sgt Boyd, a radio operator on Lancaster ME595, lost his life during a raid on Brunswick. His plane was hit by an anti-aircraft barrage and caught fire, forcing the seven man crew to bale out. Sergeant Boyd, wounded by flak, snagged his parachute as he made his way towards the exit door, causing it to partially unpack. With the plane losing height Sgt Boyd had no time to repack the parachute and, when he jumped to avoid the flames, it failed to deploy correctly and he fell to his death. Note (2): The medals of Sgt Boyd's brother constitute the following lot.

Breast pocket has a 3rd Carpathian division 800 silver metal screw back badge with the original screw nut fitting having F M LORIOLI MILANO ROMA makers mark. Medal ribbons for Virtuti Militari and Cross of Valour medals. Tunic remains with just light service wear.
