A Victorian specimen wood centre table, the circular top intricately inlaid in a scale design with a variety of specimen woods. The table top diameter 45 ins. PROVENANCE-this table was exhibited at The North London Working Classes Industrial Exhibition 1864. Accompanying the table is one volume “Illustrated Memorial of the North London Working Classes Industrial Exhibition 1864”. This table is Exhibit No. 800. The table was awarded a First Class Prize Certificate to The Manufacturer J. Selley, Carpenter, 7 Heath Villas, Hampstead Heath and signed by Russell, Gladstone & Shaftesbury. The certificate is dated 1864 and the accompanying medal 1866. the medal date on the certificate is also dated 1866 and was probably presented just over a year after the exhibition. Provenance by descent through the family (see illustration).
A set of six silver golfing spoons Walker and Hall, Sheffield 1933, trefoil terminal with crossed golf club motif; together with three golfing achievement spoons with reeded transitions and handles modelled as a devilish figure holding clubs with a golf ball in open mouth, the bowls engraved with achievements (1st class medal, two second class bogeys); also included are four unmarked silver spoons with African head finials. First World War Royal Flying Corps interest - The 2nd Lieutenant Leslie Reed Blacking archive Leslie Reed Blacking served initially with the London Rifle Brigade and in the summer of 1918, at the age of 19, was sent to serve in the Royal Flying Corps with 207 squadron, where his task was to fly Handley Page 0/400 night bombers on raids behind the German lines. Later he became a heavy bomber pilot with the R.A.F. on the first Allied strategic bombing operations. After the war he went out to Hong Kong in banking; he also came to know Penang, Ipoh and Singapore well. His career was with the Bank of India, in China, Malaya and the United States, where he was manager of the New York branch during the 2nd World War. He maintained his contacts with banking and aviation, attending an annual dinner in the RAF Club and his bank’s annual gathering for former employees. He died at the age of 82. This archive comprises a fascinating collection of personal possessions, medals, ephemera and photographs, including the following: 1. A bar of four medals – Two of the 1st War, George V Efficiency Service Medal (Karachi Corps) and Elizabeth 2nd Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Medal, together with the corresponding miniature dress medals. 2. Silver mounted swagger stick 3. Silver mounted Tortoiseshell brooch inlaid with the insignia of the London Rifle Brigade 4. A box of insignia and uniform badges pertaining to the London Rifle Brigade, the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force and his “Dog Tags”. 5. An Album containing photographs of his early career in the R.F.C. including some of himself, uniformed colleagues and others of aircraft, some of which are shown after crash landing. 6. Several envelopes containing family papers, including Marriage Certificates, Death Certificates, Wills and letters to and from family members and business acquaintances. 7. A copy of a biographical novel written from his thoughts and memories by his friend and author, Humphrey Wynn, entitled, “Darkness Shall Cover Me”. Subtitled, Night Bombing over the Western Front. Together with the original typescript of the book, when provisionally entitled, “Peradventure the Darkness”, which contains a handwritten letter from the author to Monica, Leslie Blacking’s daughter. 8. A print entitled “Last Post”, presented to him during his visit to Ypres, 22nd April 1972, signed by the donor, F. Vandevoorde, O.B.E.
** A PAIR OF 60 BORE FRENCH PERCUSSION RIFLED OFFICER`S PISTOLS BY LEPAGE, ARQUEBUSIER DU ROI A PARIS, NO. 3568, DATED 1835 with heavy octagonal rifled sighted barrels, etched with scrollwork and foliage within shaped panels on each face, with further matching panels inscribed by the maker `Lepage a Paris`, `Arqer du Roi`, `Acier fondu` and the proclamation `Par esse no licet`, recessed breeches stamped with the date and the serial numbers beneath, inlaid with platinum lines, pierced platinum plugs, engraved case-hardened serial numbered tangs fitted with adjustable back-sights, signed scroll-engraved back-action locks, fitted with scroll-engraved hammers, set triggers, highly figured walnut half-stocks, stamped with the serial numbers next to the breeches, boldly carved with a shell at the fore-end, the butts cut with a panel of fine chequering and incorporating an asymmetrical rest carved en suite with the fore-ends at the base for steadying, engraved blued spurred trigger-guards, silver barrel bolt escutcheons, and no provision for ramrods 24.7 cm; 9 ¾ in barrels (2) Jean André Prosper Henri Lepage is recorded in Paris circa 1792-1854. He was arquebusier du Roi to Louis XVIII, Charles X and Louis Philippe. He was awarded the silver medal at the Paris Industrial Exhibitions of 1823, 1827, 1834, and 1839.
