WW2 1940 8th (Irish) Battalion Kings Liverpool Regiment Casualty Medal Group, consisting of un-named 1939-45 War medal and 1939-45 Defence medal. Housed in the original OHMS forwarding box addressed to his father in Liverpool and complete with the forwarding army council casualty slip having name “Piper P.M. Coulter”. Piper Peter Michael Coulter died of wounds received through enemy action on 24th August 1940. He was buried in Liverpool (Ford) Roman Catholic Cemetery. The details of his death appeared in two Liverpool newspapers.

Only Fools & Horses - an original prop / costume WWII Second World War medal as worn by Buster Merryfield who played Uncle Albert in the series. The medal - a genuine WWII ' War Medal ' and ribbon, was worn by Merryfield throughout the series, and can be viewed in several episodes. This medal, thought to be one of only a handful used in the series, comes framed and glazed alongside a photograph of Del and Rodney, with Del wearing Albert's medals in the episode ' Strangers On The Shore '. The display also features an autographed title page from Merryfield's ' During The War ' autobiography. The medal comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Only Fools And Horses Appreciation Society. Framed. Total size: 23cm x 41cm. Uncle Albert was famous for his ' During the war...' speeches, and this prop medal relates directly to one of the best-loved running jokes in the entire series. A unique opportunity.
WWI Trio, British War Medal 1914-1918, Victory Medal and 1914-15 Star and dog tag for Captain Cyril. M. Longbotham the star and dog tag named Lieut Longbotham,72nd Punjabis of the North west Frontier Force, Indian Army, together with a set of miniatures and ribbon bar, also a photo of C.M Longbotham, on polo horse, eight photographs of Longbotham and his soldiers in the trenches, a photo postcard of Longbotham in hospital, a photo album showing various company groups, as well as scenes of India and miniature versions of the trench scenes, also cemetery photographs and obituary newspaper cuttings. The lot also contains a letter written in pencil from Longbotham to Lieutenant R. Whittle Royal Field Artillery (see separate lot in this sale) dated 15th April 1915 describing life in the trenches, 'we have only had 5 or 6 casualties since we took over the firing line, escaped from snipers' and 'I here they are going to push in another part of the line, certainly they won't push here' Lieutenant Reg Whittles the recipient of the letter married a miss Doris Longbotham (sister of Captain Cyril Cyril Longbotham) whilst on leave. See the medal group, sword and photographs relating to Lieutenant Reg Whittles included in this sale. Captain C. M. Longbotham was the son of a well known family of Halifax solicitors. After his education he was articled at his Father's practice but after two years decided to change career and at the age of 20 joined the Volunteer Battalion of the West Riding regiment. Longbotham joined the regular army and was posted in 1911 to the 2nd Leicester's then serving in India. Here he was transferred to the 72nd Punjabis of the North west Frontier Force, Indian Army. When war broke out in 1914 Longbotham was at home on leave but immediately presented himself for to the war office. He was posted to the 11th Service Battalion of the King's Liverpool and was in charge of the King's Bodyguard at the Royal Pavillion during the King's visit. Longsbotham assisted in training the Liverpools but in March 1915 was cabled to proceed to France to join the Meerut Division of the Indian Expeditionary Force and was posted to the 58th Vaughan's Rifles. He served in Flanders and was wounded on 20th May 1915 in the Neuve Chapelle sector by a piece of shrapnel to the ear drum but also suffered from gas and concussion and was invalided home. Despite several attempts to rejoin regular service in the Army Longbotham never did fully recover and died at the age of 32 whilst in Switzerland where it was believed that the climate would restore his health.

Silver Davison's Nile medal awarded to Thomas Atkinson (1768 - 1836) Master of the Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar. The officer class medal set in 9ct rose gold mount incorporating the contemporary engraved sections of the original mount, the engraving reading 'from Alexr Davison Esqr. St James's Square, A Tribute of Regard'. Also a Baltic Medal, 1856 engraved 'W.G. ATKINSON, MASTER'S ASSISTANT HMS ARROGANT' also a Greenwich Hospital Nautical School Medal for Science and Good Conduct engraved 'H.N. ATKINSON 1857' (3) Provenance: These medals were originally sold by Reeman Dansie Auctioneers Colchester in November 2004 on behalf of the Atkinson family. The medals are accompanied by two letters from the Admiralty to Mrs E. S. Atkinson and to W.J Atkinson as well as a letter from H.N Atkinson and an obituary for Horatio Nelson Atkinson. The lot is accompanied by extensive research into Thomas Atkinson and the Atkinson family including copies of family history listings, wills, marriage records, record of service for Thomas Atkinson as well as facsimiles of the musters for ships the Blonde and Rattler, together with pay books for the ships Hannibal and Rattler on which Thomas Atkinson served. The lot also contains a copy of the sale receipt from Reeman Dansie as well as a certificate for remounting the Nile medal in a new 9ct Gold mount by C.W. Sellors of Ashbourne stating that the engraved parts of the original mount have been attached to the new setting.
Lieutenant Colonel R.A. Bowman M.B.E. 16/5 Lancers medals and related items, to include Order of British Empire Military 2nd Type medal, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star with 1st Army bar, Italy Star, Defence Medal, 1939-1945 War Medal, 1962 Campaign Service medal with bars for Radfan and South Arabia, named rim 'Major R.A. Bowman M.B.E 16/5L' 1953 Coronation medal, and Regular Army George VI Long Service and Good Conduct medal named '317648 S.Q.M.SR.A. Bowman16/5 L' medals with corresponding miniatures, also the framed January 1958 M.B.E. certificate, also a 'For Loyal Service' barometer plaque presented by Colonel H.A.G. Brooke M.C. on behalf of the Regiment Associations 2nd May 1981, and a collection of buttons worn by Bowman. Lieutenant Colonel R. A. Bowman MBE Lieutenant Colonel Robert Bowman (Bob) joined the 16 th / 5 th Lancers at the age of 19 in York 1934 serving for fifty years continuously from 1934 – 1984 with the regiment starting as a from the lowest ranks and mucking horse stables out to holding the title of Lieutenant Colonel and receiving the MBE in 1958. Bob Bowman’s career truly began when he moved with the regiment to Hounslow in 1937 where they were based for the 1937 Coronation of King George VI, Bob was in the Musical Ride at Olympia. In November of the same year the Lancers sailed to India and here Bob Bowman was present for the final ceremonial mounted parade for the 16 th / 5 th Lancers on 1 st January 1939 at Risalpur to mark the anniversary of Queen Victoria becoming Empress of India (the equivalent in India of Trooping the Colour) Bob Bowman was to return to the UK upon the outbreak of WWII before the regiment then sailed to North Africa to embark on operation Torch. It was here that Bob Bowman learnt skills that were to be used for life when he was drafted into the Quartermaster’s department. Bob Bowman served with the regiment throughout both the North Africa campaign and the Italian Campaign. Bob Bowman’s importance in the Quartermaster’s department cannot be overstated. He was to revolutionise systems and set new standards so significant that the rest of the Army would move over to new methods of working as devised by Bob. Quartermasters of other regiments were sent to see Bob Bowman and his advice and professionalism was sought and appreciated by both the QM’s and Bobs commanding officers. Amongst many other achievements Bob Bowman was in the representative party of the 15 th / 6 th Lancers to be invited to Windsor Castle during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Upon reaching retirement age for active service Bob Bowman took on the role of Regimental Secretary at Home Headquarters.
