A unique and exquisitely illustrated manuscript book created by John Wood as 'a keepsake' for his sister Elizabeth, 1863. Octavo, beginning with a dedication to Elizabeth and a self-portrait, 209pp on 418 leaves, illustrated throughout, bound in half crushed morocco with raised bands, marbled boards and marbled endpapers. The first part of the book recounts his travels, including a visit to the Crystal Palace in 1851, as well as historic vignettes & legends; the second part is titled 'The Story of an Artist's Life' and tells the story of his triptych [in this sale], which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852; the third part is titled 'A Retrospect' and is autobiographical, explaining his deep, lifelong love for art, with one section on 'The friendship of Sir Thomas Lawrence'; the fourth part is a series of historical, classical and Shakespearean subjects, followed by an index to the designs. Almost every page is embellished with fine ink drawings illustrating the subjects, and many pages are entirely self-contained pictures. The craftsmanship of the work is staggering. The Illustrated Autobiography of John Wood, with Personal Reminiscences, Anecdotes &c., in three volumes, entirely handwritten and illustrated throughout with numerous original sketches & watercolours plus mounted engravings after his work, 1868-69. Quarto, half crushed morocco lettered in gilt, marbled boards & endpapers, top edge gilt, each volume beginning with a pictorial title page and illustrated frontispiece, all of the leaves inscribed and numbered on one side only, pp. 179, 171, 139. An exquisite and painstakingly produced work in which John Wood recounts his 'early love for art' and 'sketching in school' to gaining 'the notice of Sir Thomas Lawrence', his experience of the Royal Academy, commissions, exhibiting, notable successes, and personal matters, closing with a poignant and reflective conclusion in which he can longer create art due to 'suffering most from a depression of spirits'. Contents well-preserved, clean and bright, occasional pale spotting, heavier at blank endleaves, bindings good, a little rubbed & worn at corners/edges. Baldwin & Sons, Guncannon St, London to a bar brooch fitting, in original fitted case; together with copies of associated paperwork, service record, commission, etc. Bar brooch 11.3cm wideJohn Sewell (1874-1938) served as a soldier for 12 years and a Warrant Officer for 11 years before being commissioned as an Officer and rising to the temporary rank of Major. He served in two campaigns: South Africa 1899-1902 (Natal) and The Great War 1914-1919 (France, Egypt and Palestine). He was mentioned in despatches three times (1916, 1918 and 1919), and was awarded an O.B.E. in 1918 for "meretorious service on the Staff of General Lord Allenby M.E.L.F."
