In WWII he served with 804, 803, 805 & 809 Squadrons. He retired as a Major in July 1958. ++++

QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL three clasp Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal 1068 ORDLY W DERNLEY ST JOHN AMB BDE and St John Ambulance Brigade Medal for South Africa 1068 PTE W DEARNLEY WELBECK DIV The Welbeck Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade was attached to the Portland Hospital and financed by the Duke of Portland, Adeline Duchess of Bedford, Earl of Derby and Lord and Lady Henry Bentinck amongst others. The Division was commanded by Surgeon Major Kilkelly, RAMV. The men of the Portland Hospital embarked from Liverpool to South Africa in December 1899 on the White Star liner 'Majestic' under Capt Edward Smith, subsequently Captain of the RMS 'Titanic'.
