The Division was commanded by Surgeon Major Kilkelly, RAMV. The men of the Portland Hospital embarked from Liverpool to South Africa in December 1899 on the White Star liner 'Majestic' under Capt Edward Smith, subsequently Captain of the RMS 'Titanic'.
