THOMAS "TOM" SIMPSON; an important archive relating to the cyclist comprising a yellow and blue jersey worn by Simpson and detailed "Rapha Geminiani", seen worn by Simpson in the album of photographs for his victory in the Tour of the West of France, 1959, Lorient-Quimper, a black and white vertically striped "Carpano" jersey with label for Seregni & Gallazzi of Milan, a blue and red striped "England" jersey with label for Tricot Noret St. Denoval, a cream long sleeve rainbow striped jersey, and a pale blue and cream "Bianchi Firelli" jersey, also included in the lot are a number of pennants and a large collection of cloth badges, a cream, red and black sash "Stadien Wielerbaan Amsterdam 1950", a black cloth bag "Enfield R.C. Spring Racing Weekend, Double Diamond", and an album mainly comprising newspaper, magazine articles and pictures covering 1959-1964 as well as six letters dated 1959 from Simpson to the vendor's father, one dated 10-11-59 detailing a visit to Liverpool to see "Dave" stating he will bring over several articles for his collection including jerseys, pennants, and such. Tom Simpson was one of Britain's most successful cyclists, he won a bronze medal for track cycling at the 1956 Summer Olympics, and a silver medal at the 1958 British Empire & Commonwealth Games. When he turned professional at the age of 21, he won the 1961 Tour of Flanders and became the first British rider to wear the yellow jersey during the 1962 Tour de France. In 1963 he won several other races and in 1965 became Britain's first World Road Race Champion, also winning the Giro di Lombardia, making him the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, the first cyclist to win this award. Sadly, Simpson collapsed and died during the ascent of Mont Ventoux during the 1967 Tour de France aged just 29. CONDITION REPORT: Jerseys are of mixed condition, some moth holes.

A rare Edwardian 9ct gold and double sided enamel decorated football medal for the Zingari League, the front centred with an enamelled portrait of a young gypsy girl within a pierced border inscribed "I Zingari Football League Season 1908-9", the reverse centred with an enamel roundel depicting a female upon horseback within a border inscribed "Valkyrie Champions Div One. H.L.Lloyd", length 3cm, approx 8.4g. The Zingari League was an amateur football competition based in Liverpool starting in 1895; the league continued to be run until 2006 when it merged with the Liverpool County Combination to form the new Liverpool County Premier League.

MILITARY MEDALS & INTERESTING ITEMS RELATING TO S/SGT. CHARLES ROEBUCK of the Royal Engineers and including a 1939-1945 Defence Medal with oak leaf, 1939-1945 Star, The Burma Star, a Burma Star Association pin, military paperwork, copy of relevant London Gazette sent On His Majesty's Service and complete with envelope and letter, a folding map of India and Assam, watercolour sketches of Burma, a Royal Engineers needlework sampler etc. Typed on both sides of eight A-5 lined sheets, an interesting log of air raids in the Cardiff and South Wales / West Wales area in 1939 / 1940, notes location and impact. It details the devastating, and infamous, bombing - on Monday, August 19, 1940 - when three Luftwaffe planes took aim at Admiralty oil tanks, holding millions of gallons of vital fuel, above Pembroke Dock. The resulting inferno raged for 18 days. The entry begins: '3.15 p.m. having tea when heard sound of bombs exploding - about 6-8, also whistling bombs. Then sound of planes - very loud - passing overhead. Prep. Take cover. Action over in about 12-15 secs. Saw huge clouds of smoke S.W. Pembroke. Went to top of Defensible Barracks Hill and saw Oil Tanks blazing - flames 100-200 ft. high and enormous clouds of smoke.' Of the 18 tanks at the Llanreath Oil Tank Depot, 11 were destroyed and 33 million gallons of oil lost before the flames were eventually extinguished in September 1940. More than 22 brigades and 650 men from across the UK were needed to quell the blaze which caused five from Cardiff to lose their lives. 1815 Waterloo Medal Trooper John Hughes, 12th Prince Of Wales Light Dragoons. John Hughes Served With The 12th Light Dragoons At Salamanca And Victoria During The Peninsular Wars. Hughes Later Served Under Lord Wellington At The Battle Of Waterloo, Where The 12th Lead The Charge Of Vandeleur's Cavalry Brigade. Nearly A Third Of The Men Of The 12th Became Casualties. Hughes And His Captain, Edwyn Sandys, Were Among The Wounded. Sandys Succumbed To His Injuries Shortly After The Battle. The Colonel Of The 12th, Frederick Ponsonby, Was Also Grievously Wounded But Survived. Hughes Was Pensioned In September 1827

Contained in a non-official velvet lined case with a length of Crimea medal ribbon glued into the inside lid. Private Gregory Jowett rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava on 25th October 1854 and is credited with saving the life of Lieutenant Roger Palmer, against whom a Russian had raised his carbine".
