Lot 17

A Queen's South Africa Medal 1899-1902 to Private John Mullen, Liverpool Regiment Mounted Infantry, second type, 4 clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1902 (7203 PTE J. MULLEN. L'POOL REGT M.I.), very fine. Attested in Warrington 25/10/1900 and attended mounted infantry training at Aldershot before serving in South Africa. Sentenced to hard labour for falling asleep at his post. Re-engaged in 1912 following a period in the Reserve, and entered France 12/08/1914. Suffered a shell wound which necessitated the amputation of his right leg, and discharged as "no longer physically fit for war service" in June 1915. nb 'Mullen' and 'Mullins' used interchangeably on service documents.

Enlisted 1904 and served with the BEF in France from 13/08/1914. Re-attested in the field 14/02/1919. Discharged 23/11/1925 at Shrewsbury, with exemplary character. Also awarded the 1914 Star and the Victory Medal (not present).

Riall, served as a Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment during the Boer War, including the Battle of Spion Kop, and a Vaal Krantz and Pieter's Hill, and was mentioned in a despatch. He served with the first battalion in the campaign against the Mohmands in 1908. After arriving on the Western Front of the First World War 21/12/1914, he was severely wounded 10/08/1915 while leading a working party at the Hooge. Made O.B.E. in the 1919 Birthday Honours "for valuable services rendered in connection with the war"* the 1908 Army list states entitlement to five clasps, but the QSA roll confirms six, and seems to indicate that Cape Colony was a later additional authorisation.

R.F.A.); Meritorious Service Medal, George V (51626 B. S. MJR: A. W. GALLEY. A. BY: 63/BDE: R.F.A.), mounted for wearing, near very fine and better. [5] M.S.M. London Gazette: 04/06/1917 Born in 1871 in Essex and worked as a labourer before joining the R.A. in February 1889. Servied in Gibraltar, Aden and India, and awarded the L.S.G.C. Medal in 1907, before being discharged, on completion of his 21 year term of service, in 1910. Recalled from the reserve in September 1914, and awarded the M.S.M. in 1917 "for valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field" in France. R.A.O.C.); Meritorious Service Medal, George V (T-256 T. AMT: S. MJR: T. F. COLLIER. A.O.C.), mounted for wearing, good very fine or better. [5] M.S.M. London Gazette: 17/06/1918 Born in Basingstoke 10/12/1879 and was a ship fitting apprentice before signing up to the Artificer Section, A.O.C., for 12 years in May 1903. Served in Malta prior to the First World War, before a brief posting to the Isle of Wight in 1911. Served in France between August 1914 and June 1918. His M.S.M. card notes that he was attached to No. 12 Ordnance Mobile Workshop, which was probably based in Boulogne. Offered with research.

MORLEY. R.E.); Regular Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, George V (1844723 SJT. T. O. MORLEY. R.E.); Meritorious Service Medal, George VI (1844723 W.O. CL. 2. T. O. MORLEY. R.E.), display mounted, edge bruising, near very fine. [5] A blacksmith from Portsmouth, Morley enlisted in the R.E. in August 1914 aged 23 years, and served in France with 23rd Field Company until sustaining a wound to the head at Loos, 29/09/1915, and being hospitalized to the U.K. He returned to active service in Salonika in January 1916, where he contracted malaria. In the inter-war period he served in Dublin and India, received his LS.G.C. in 1933, and his M.S.M. between 1949 and 1953. Offered with research.

A collection of Great War medal and associated ephemera to two brothers, comprising: the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal to Lieutenant Arthur Fogg, Royal Fusiliers and Machine Gun Corps (PS-6932 PTE A. FOGG. R. FUS: and LIEUT. A. FOGG.), mounted for wearing, good very fine; together with the British War Medal and Victory Medal to Gunner Percy Fogg, R.G.A. (127002 GNR. P. FOGG. R.A.), in original packaging, and the Silver War Badge issued to this man (424754), BWM with irregular patination therefore very fine, VM extremely fine. [5]; together with a quantity of photographs, original documents, and other ephemera. Arthur and Percy Fogg were sons to Herbert Fogg, a rag merchant from Dewsbury, and his wife Gertrude. Arthur entered France 14/11/1915 as a Private with the 21st Battalion Royal Fusiliers, and was discharged to a commission in the Machine Gun Corps 25/09/1916. His younger brother Percy served with 275 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, and was wounded by shrapnel, in the right buttock, 14/11/1917.

Two Great War trios, each comprising 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal: the first to Lieutenant Douglas Gilbert Prentice, Worcester Regiment and Royal Air Force (2. LIEUT. D.G. PRENTICE WORC. R. and LIEUT. D.G. PRENTICE. R.A.F.), mounted for wearing, good very fine; the second to Henry Thomas Barnaby, Royal Veterinary Corps (S.E. 1250 PTE. H. T. BARNABY. A.V.C. and SE-1250 PTE. H. T. BARNABY. A.V.C.), mounted for wearing on long ribbons, very fine; the second group accompanied by a small quantity of ephemera. D.G. Prentice enlisted as a Private in the Sportsman's Battalion Royal Fusiliers 10/10/1914, and was discharged to a commission in the 5th Battalion Worcester Regiment 27/04/1915. He applied to transfer to the R.F.C. 26/09/1915, citing his pre-war experience as a mechanic, and joined at Farnborough 09/11/1915 as an Assistant Equipment Officer. Disembodied 18/02/1919, he later enlisted in the supplementary reserve Royal Artillery 20/04/1926. Offered with copy research for this officer.

Suffered a severe gun shot wound, Gallipoli, c. 13th August 1915, which necessitated the amputation of his left leg.

London Gazette: 12/03/1917 The recipient's act of gallantry occurred 23/08/1916 while in Tug H.S.7 towing two barges from Hull to Cardiff. When the tow rope parted in heavy seas, Sapper Johnson leaped from the tug onto the barges, and persisted in attempting to take them in tow, in extremely hazardous conditions, until being crushed between a barge and the tug, and loosing his left foot. "The barges had broken adrift twice previously and each time Sapper Johnson had boarded them showing great coolness, courage and pluck in the risky work.". Discharged 28/11/1917 and awarded S.W.B. number 281141. Offered with much research.

TUCKER SKIPPER LT 2657.", in Garrard case of issue, nearly extremely fine; together with a 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, and War Medal 1939-45; and separately a France and Germany Star, all unnamed as issued, the combination of recipients possibly being this officer and his son, good very fine or better, [5]; together with a Mention in Despatches certificate (Skipper William Tucker R.N.R.), medal ribbons fitted for wearing and including the Reserve Decoration, the postage box for the campaign medals, and a small quantity of associated original documents. M.I.D. London Gazette 01/01/1941 D.S.C. London Gazette 01/01/1942 Born in Grimsby, 18/09/1903, William Tucker became a trawlerman, and enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve in September 1924. He was certified as a Skipper by the United Navigation Committee of Grimsby, 03/08/1927 (certificate offered in this lot). In October 1939 he took command of H.M. Trawler York City, which had been requisitioned in August of that year, undertaking anti-submarine duties.

Five Medal to Major Henry Mark Healy, T.D., London Irish Rifles: 1914-15 Star (MAJOR H. M. HEALY. 18-LOND. R.); British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (MAJOR H. M. HEALY.); Territorial Decoration, Edward VII, reverse engraved "Captain & Hon. Major H. M. Healy LONDON IRISH RIFLES (18th County of London) 1909", hallmarked for London 1908; Volunteer Long Service Medal, Victoria (Lieut. H. M. HEALY. 16/Middx. V. R. C.), engraved; later court mounted; all good very fine. Henry Mark Healy appears in the 1898 Army List as a Lieutenant from 22nd January, and his Victorian Volunteer Long Service Medal indicates that he must have enlisted c. 1880. He entered France with the 1st/18th London Regiment 09/03/1915. He took part in fighting at Festubert, May 1915, in the course of which he took command of the Battalion when Lieutenant Colonel Concannon D.S.O. was taken ill. Slightly wounded in the head by shell fire 26/05/1915. Ordered to the UK for transfer to the Territorial Force Reserve in August 1915, owing to severe dental and gastric complaints. Provenance: The Paul Morrissey collection. NB. The collector reunited the T.D. with the other medals to this officer, in the 1980s.

R.), very fine or better, together with a Frederick Lucas Cook tribute cross* and case (A. Halsey), identity tags, and a LIR Old Comrades Association card. William Henry Walter Fox died of wounds 06/10/1918. His battalion was in Divisional Reserve on this day, but had come under sniper and machine gun fire South of Fromelles 02/10/1918 with the War Diary reporting "30 other ranks casualties" * Sometime MP for Kennington and Deputy Lieutenant of the City of London. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 07/08/1917, his obituary states that he was also gassed at High Wood, and that he remained in the army after the armistice, serving in Adena in Turkey, and at a POW camp at Rugeley. The A.F.C. group of nine medals to George Reginald Ashton, Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Air Force: Air Force Cross, George VI, first type, reverse impressed '1939' in small figures to the lower limb*, in case of issue, extremely fine, toned; 1914-15 Star (228216, G. R. ASHTON. C.P.O. 3, R.N.A.S.); British War Medal 1914-20 ad Victory Medal with MID emblem (FLT. S. LT. G. R. ASHTON. R.N.A.S.); Coronation Medal 1937, unnamed as issued; the last four court mounted, near very fine; 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 with MID emblem, all unnamed as issued and swing mounted, very fine. [9]; together with this officer's flying log books (5), his dress miniature medals, his certificate of commission as a Flight Sub Lieutenant R.N., his MID certificate for 24th September 1941, a leather flying helmet with Gosport tubes and goggles, and various other items of associated ephemera. George Ashton was born to Laura Ashton 14/04/1888 in Ryde in the parish of St Helens on the Isle of Wight, and he resided at the Coast Guard Station, East Cowes. He volunteered for service in the Royal Navy in 1903, serving as a Boy in various establishments before rating as Ordinary Seaman 14/04/1906 - his 18th birthday. He progressed to Leading Seaman by the autumn of 1911, and in April 1913 he gained an Aviator's Certificate from the Royal Aero Club of the U.K. (included in this lot). He was commissioned Probationary Flight Officer R.N.A.S. 28/10/1917. His A.F.C. was gazetted in the New Year Honour for 1939. He began the Second World War as Squadron Leader in command of the communication Squadron with the B.E.F. in France (designated 81 Squadron in December 1939), and the in command of 98 Squadron at Nantes before evacuating to the UK in June 1940 as a Wing Commander flying a Fairey Battle. 98 Squadron was attached to Coastal Command and relocated to Kaldadarnes in Iceland for coastal patrol and anti-submarine duties. While in Iceland Ashton, now a Group Commander, flew Tiger Moth T. 5878 as personal transport. He returned to the U.K. in 1941 and went on to command at R.A.F. Station Doncaster, and 5 Maintenance Unit at Kemble. * See Abbot and Tamplin, 'British Gallantry Awards', p. 8, for this variation.
