Ex-works, Jack Blackwell, Francis Beart, 1949 ISDT1949 Norton 490cc Trials Motorcycle ProjectRegistration no. JOV 758Frame no. 24835Engine no. C4 18573CT•Gold Medal winner at the 1949 ISDT•Offered for reconstruction•Well documented'Off road' authority Don Morley has confirmed that this motorcycle was one of four used by the Norton factory for the 1949 International Six Days Trial, held that year in Wales. The rider was A J 'Jack' Blackwell, who won a Gold Medal (see results on file). For each year's ISDT, the ACU would invite the top British factories to submit their machines and riders for what were known as Selection Tests. These were usually run by the Army and involved several days of competition over a series of very tough courses resembling what would be encountered come the ISDT itself.Norton's top rider in 1949 was Rex Young, who could not be picked as he was an Australian; hence none of Norton's riders were picked to represent GB in the Trophy squad, though pre-WW2 star Jack Williams was chosen for the ACU team in the lesser Vase competition. There was also a separate manufacturers team trophy, which Norton considered worth contesting and so they fielded a three-man team comprising Rex Young, Jack Blackwell and R Clayton. Additionally there was also a Sidecar Award and for that they entered Arthur Humphries. The accompanying original RF60 logbook shows that 'JOV 758' was registered to Norton Motors on 5th August 1949, with legendary Norton tuner/entrant Francis Beart listed as '1st change' on 28th August 1950. The machine had matching numbers at that time (the engine was changed in 1953). A VMCC dating letter states that the engine currently installed was dispatched to Ray Petty in 1948. Registered to '2nd change' owner John Robert House in 1951, 'JOV 758' was back at Beart's shop in 1959 (see second RF60 logbook on file) and was sold on.Sadly, Francis Beart's records are unavailable; however, there is a hand written notebook on file labelled 'Norton 500T Log Book JOV 758' and annotated 'taken from Francis Beart's logbook' – detailing a comprehensive rebuild of JOV in October 1959 (examination highly recommended). No doubt the new owner will have great pleasure researching the history of the machine in Beart's ownership.Sold strictly as viewed, this Lot consists of a frame and an incomplete engine only. Also included in the sale are an old-style V5; the second RF60 logbook; the aforementioned VMCC dating letter; copies of The Motor Cycle and Motor Cycling's 1949 ISDT editions; and a photograph of Jack Blackwell competing in the 1949 ISDT. Lot 329

1966 Suzuki 79cc K11T WorksRegistration no. GOF 540DFrame no. 188565Engine no. 183216• Rare Trail version of K11 sports• Believed to be used by Olga Kevelos in the 1966 ISDT• Purchased from Arthur LampkinFrom the outset, Michio Suzuki's company was involved in the manufacture of looms. Needing to diversify after World War Two, Suzuki manufactured a number of other goods before turning his attention to powered cycles. The first complete machine was launched in 1954, but it was not until 1961 that Suzuki opened an office in London, and 1963 before they began officially to import motorcycles to the UK, when they came to a distribution agreement with AMC; Suzuki Great Britain Ltd. was formed, and part of the James factory was utilised for the purpose. No strangers to the 'race on Sunday, sell on Monday' principle, Suzuki had already won TT trophies in 1961 and 1962 with lightweights before importing machines, and once underway they looked to other forms of competition to promote their wares. Thus it was, that they were able to recruit the redoubtable and glamorous Olga Kevelos to ride their machine in 1966 in the ISDT in Sweden – an ultimate test of a motorcycle. Olga was something of a coup for Suzuki, as she guaranteed column inches, being a glamorous female in a predominantly male-dominated sport, and she was no slouch in motorcycling terms, having competed in the ISDT most years since 1948. In 1949 she won a gold medal on her factory-supported Norton 500T. Provided with a K11T by Suzuki, Olga unfortunately fell prey to sickness at the end of the first day, and was unable to start the second day of competition. The green RF60 log book on file documents the ownership of GOF 540D, with the first registered owner being 'Suzuki (Gt. Britain) Ltd.', and the entry was signed by Alan Kimber, who was initially Sales Manager, and then a Director of the company. After Suzuki, ownership moved northwards to Fred Watson of Silsden, Keighley in 1967, then to Anthony Bell, before coming into the ownership of Arthur Lampkin. Many years later, in 2008, Arthur sold the Suzuki to Derek Rumble (of sidecar fame), advising him that he believed this bike to be the one that Olga Kevelos used in the 1966 ISDT. However, this is undocumented, and accordingly, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the history, provenance, and origins of this machine prior to bidding. Arthur Lampkin rode for the British team in the 1966 ISDT.Derek purchased the Suzuki as a restoration project, and set about the work, completing the task over a period of two years to his usual high standard. There is a handwritten list on file of parts purchased and used. Documentation comprises an old-type V5C, the green RF60 log book mentioned above, purchase receipt, and the list of parts used. There is also a spare K10 engine included with the bike.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 321

Ex-Jim Alves, ISDT Gold Medal Winning1951 Triumph 500cc TrophyRegistration no. LNX 361 Frame no. 9806 NAEngine no. TR5 17479 NA•Present ownership since 2004•Restored to ISDT specification•Requires re-commissioningFrom the time of its introduction in 1948, the Triumph Trophy was established as a true all-rounder: a machine that could be ridden to work during the week and then, with extraneous components removed, competed on at weekends in its owner's chosen branch of motorcycle sport. Although catalogued primarily as a trials machine, its true forte was scrambles and the International Six Days Trial (ISDT), events in which the power of the tunable Triumph twin worked to its advantage and its weight was less of a handicap. The arrival of a new swinging-arm frame for 1955 finally put paid to the Trophy's pretensions as a one-day trials mount, for although the rear suspension enhanced traction and improved the handling, the lengthened wheelbase and increased weight rendered it un-competitive. Nevertheless, the TR5 remained an extremely competent and stylish roadster until the end of production in 1958. Ridden by P H 'Jim' Alves, the historic Triumph Trophy offered here formed part of Great Britain's team that contested the ISDT in 1951, held that year in Varese, Italy. Born in Glastonbury on 2nd January 1916, Percival Harold Alves, better known as Jim, demonstrated a precocious talent for things mechanical while still a child, building his own car at the age of 12(!), and bought his first motorcycle, an OK Supreme Flying Cloud, in 1934. Participation in one-day trials soon followed. His talent was spotted while he was competing in Home Guard events during the war; Jim became 'one to watch', prompting an approach from the Triumph factory. A factory-supported rider from 1946, Alves stunned the trials world by winning that year's Cotswold Trial riding a modified Triumph 3T twin, confounding critics who maintained that only single-cylinder motorcycles were suitable for trials use. Don Morley: 'In his first season Jim won four trade supported nationals and finished fourth in the British Experts trial on his now famous little roadster ENX 674, successes that were against the odds and scored at a rate that soon saw the man and his machine challenging Hugh Viney.'Fast forward four years and we find Jim Alves a member of the five-man British team at the 1950 ISDT in Llandrindod Wells, an event the home riders won comfortably. Understandably, for 1951 the British trophy team was unchanged, comprising Hugh Viney (AJS), Fred Rist (BSA), Bob Ray (Ariel), Jack Stocker (Royal Enfield) and Jim Alves (Triumph). Reputedly, Alves' Triumph was the first Trophy to be fitted with the 650cc engine that had debuted in the Thunderbird and would power the TR6 Trophy. In addition there were two 499cc works Triumphs entered, both in the vase competition, ridden by Burt Gaymer ('LNX 351') and Peter Hammond ('LNX 341'). The British team won the trophy competition yet again; all three Triumph teamsters won Gold Medals and the Meriden factory walked away with the manufacturers' award. After the event Triumph stripped all the ISDT parts off 'LNX 361' and replaced the 650cc engine with a 499cc unit whose number did not match the frame's. They then sold the machine to Jim Alves, who retailed it as a regular Trophy. Its late owner acquired 'LNX 361' in 2004 and restored the Trophy to ISDT specification, though is not known when the machine was last used; re-commissioning will be required before further use. Accompanying documentation includes an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1957), sundry bills and a V5C Registration Certificate. Of particular interest are two 'dinner' programmes: 'Triumph Complimentary Dinner to P H Alves in recognition of his long and successful association with Triumph'; and 'Motor Cycling 1947 British Experts Trial Celebration Dinner'. Importantly, the former contains a page signed by the many motorcycling celebrities in attendance, including Geoff Duke, Bill Nicholson, Jack Williams, Brian Martin and Bob Trigg. Also included in the sale is a spare 650cc engine that the owner had intended to fit but never finished building. Former ISDT-winning motorcycles are only rarely offered for sale, making this ex-works Triumph Trophy, ridden by one of the foremost off-road stars of the day, of especial interest to collectors.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1960 BSA 250cc C15T Trials MotorcycleRegistration no. 738 FYDFrame no. C15S.1586Engine no. C15T 706With its heavyweight B32 and B34 models becoming increasingly un-competitive, BSA had begun developing a trials version for the lightweight C15 '250' roadster in the late 1950s, before the model's official launch. The trials C15 made its official debut at the start of the 1959 season when Jeff Smith secured a remarkable victory in the St David's Trial. Smith followed this up with wins in the Scott and Perce Simon events, and at the season's end the model was offered to customers for 1960 'as ridden by the works'. In production form the C15T incorporated many design compromises that were not inflicted on the works bikes, which continued their run of success throughout the 1960 season. This BSA C15T was purchased by the late owner in 1960 and ridden by him in that year's Scottish Six Days Trial where he won a silver medal. The vendor's wife told us that they had their first date/dance after the event and that he talked non-stop about it! The machine is presented in restored condition but it is not known when it was last used. Recommissioning will be required before further use. Accompanying documentation consists of sundry bills; a V5C Registration Certificate; copy old V5; a 1960 SSDT programme; SSDT rules and route card; and a copy of Motor Cycling (28th April 1960 edition). Ex Bud Ekins1970 Husqvarna 400cc CrossFrame no. MH1364Engine no. 401126●Purchased new by Bud Ekins●Used for film stunt work●Unrestored condition●Documented provenanceThis machine left Gothenburg, Sweden with 55 other 400 Cross models in late 1969 bound for Los Angeles, California. They were the first consignment of Husqvarna's 400 Cross to arrive in the USA, most of which were destined for motorcycle dealerships along the USA's West Coast. Included in this consignment were actor Steve McQueen's and Malcolm Smith's bikes that would feature in the award-winning documentary film, On Any Sunday. 'MH1364' was purchased by Bud Ekins in the same week that McQueen bought his 400 Cross and it should be noted that this machine is only two engine numbers apart from the iconic On Any Sunday Husqvarna that Steve McQueen rode and was sold by Bonhams in 2018 for $230,500. A consummate off-road racer, bike restorer, occasional stunt rider and all-American hero, Ekins was a close friend of McQueen and performed the famous motorcycle jump (as McQueen's stunt double) in the movie The Great Escape. Ekins also won four Gold Medals and a Silver Medal during his seven years of competing in the International Six Days Trial in the 1960s.Bud Ekins bought the Husqvarna for his own personal use and to ride as a stunt bike in films, as confirmed by the supporting letter from Husqvarna importer, M E Dye. The bike remains in an unrestored condition. The engine turns over and the gears select; however, it should be noted that at some point in the 1970s a decompressor valve was fitted to the cylinder head. After-market Goki air caps have been fitted to the front forks and the rear shock absorbers moved further back on the swinging arm, commonplace alterations made to improve competitiveness during the 1970s. The machine has also been fitted with a Hooker performance exhaust pipe. Little has been done to the Cross, which has been stored and neither used nor started since the vendor acquired it a few years ago (its NOVA number is 16E221288). It is not known when the machine was last used and its mechanical condition is likewise unknown. Thus it is sold strictly as viewed. Accompanying paperwork consists of a California DMV transfer of ownership document in Bud Ekins' name dating from February 1970 and the aforementioned importer's letter. A rare opportunity to purchase an unrestored Husqvarna moto-crosser with confirmed celebrity provenance.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ex-works, Arthur Lampkin, 1966 ISDT 1966 BSA-Triumph 490cc EnduroRegistration no. GOB 657DFrame no. T100C 45500Engine no. H44954 (see text)One of only three made•ISDT Gold Medal winner•Well documented•Present enthusiast ownership since 2005'A former 500cc motocross Grand Prix winner, gold medallist in the International Six Days Trial, no mean grass track racer, and a brilliant trials rider, Arthur rode into history when he won the 1963 Scottish Six Days.' - On Two Wheels. During the 1965 International Six Days Trial (ISDT), held that year in the Isle of Man, all the BSA Victor works team were eliminated with electrical problems. For the 1966 ISDT, held in Sweden, the Auto-Cycle Union governing body declared that, due to BSA's poor showing in 1965, they would not be invited to submit a team. The reply was that if BSA (who owned Triumph) was not invited, no Triumphs would go either! A compromise was worked out whereby the BSA machines would be powered by the Triumph engine. Only three such machines were built, and only two were ridden in the ISDT alongside a BSA Victor. Arthur Lampkin won a Gold Medal on this bike, as did his brother Alan 'Sid' Lampkin on the other, but BSA lost the Manufacturer's Team Award when the third bike, the BSA Victor, predictably failed. Arthur's bike was proudly displayed on the ISDT stand at the Earls Court Motorcycle Show in November 1966 (see file). BSA refused to take part in the 1967 ISDT in Poland and were not prepared to loan or sell any of the previous year's BSA or Triumph bikes, so this was the end of competitive participation in the ISDT for both manufacturers. This BSA-Triumph, without its registration plates and documents, was stored in the Triumph competition shop at Meriden until 1970, when it was sold by the factory. The purchaser then registered it as 'VAA 26H' (as a Triumph) and it was sold on for restoration. During the restoration the machine's original number was discovered painted on the underside of the seat, and by matching its frame and engine number to those in the BSA and Triumph factory records, the original registration number 'GOB 657D' was reinstated. It should be noted that the engine currently installed is not original to the frame but dates from the same period. One important feature that identifies this motorcycle as Arthur Lampkin's bike is the distinctive welding on the headstock, which can be seen clearly in a photograph of his machine taken at the ISDT and reproduced in The Classic Motor Cycle (January 1987 edition, article copy on file). Also on file are numerous contemporary press cuttings showing Arthur Lampkin and 'GOB 657D' at the 1966 ISDT in Sweden together with assorted correspondence; VMCC dating document; and copies of factory documents concerning the development of the BSA-Triumph ISDT bikes. The late vendor had owned this historic ex-works BSA-Triumph since 2005, since when it has formed part of his private collection of off-road competition motorcycles. In the world of off-road motorcycle sport there is no more celebrated family than the Lampkins: brothers Arthur, Alan and Martin, and Martin's son Dougie, the latter winner of no fewer than five indoor and seven outdoor World Trials Championships. Eldest of the three, Arthur (born 30th May 1938) made his competition debut on a 197cc James while still a 'learner', and such was his obvious talent that at the tender age of 17 he became the youngest-ever member of BSA's works trial team. He made his scrambles debut with BSA, and aged 18 won the Pinhard Prize for best performance by an under 21 rider. In 1959, still only 21, he won the British 500cc Moto-cross Championship.Arthur also distinguished himself in Yorkshire's famous Scott Trial, which he first won in 1960 and would go on to win twice more (in 1961 and 1965). In 1961 he won the British Moto-Cross Championship in the 250cc category and finished 2nd in the European Championship behind BSA team-mate Dave Bickers. With the European series elevated to World status for 1962, Arthur finished the season in 3rd place behind Torsten Hallman and Jeff Smith. He was also a member of the British moto-cross teams that won the 250cc Trophée des Nations in 1961 and 1962, as well as the 1965 500cc Motocross des Nations. He also competed internationally in enduro events, representing Great Britain and earning a gold medal in the 1966 International Six Days Trial, held that year in Sweden, where the British Trophy team finished 2nd behind East Germany (further information about the 1966 ISDT may be found online). Arthur later switched to sidecar trials and proved just as competitive in that discipline.
