An interesting and impressive medal group to Captain J.A. Leighton RNR, CBE, DSO, 1914-18 War Medal, Mercantile Marine Medal, Victory Medal; Belgium, Order of the Crown; Russian, Order of St Anne, offered together with associated documents and correspondence. The recipient was a merchant captain in peace time, and at the outbreak of war was trapped, owing to various factors, in the Baltic. Thereafter he spent the war largely employed in attempting to extract British shipping from the Baltic sea, in the face of diplomatic opposition, revolution, and Bolshevik and German hostility. He appears to have played an important role in allowing the Russian Diplomat Eduard Alexander Stelp to flee from the Bolsheviks, apparently commandeering a sea plane for the purpose. After the war he was employed in Northern Germany as part of the allied committee overseeing the surrender of German shipping assets. His correspondence includes many interesting insights into the conditions of the time.
