POIGNANT DIARY & MEDAL GROUP AWARDED TO PRIVATE JOHN JOHNSTONE ALEXANDER BULLOCK, CAMERONIANS WWII army no. 14758599, the medals comprising the War Medal, the 1939-45 Star, and the France & Germany Star, the diary from January 1st-15th February 1945, with him dying a week later on the 23rd February of his wounds, aged 19, along with his service book, a photograph of him, eight photographs of his grave, his glengarry, his father's button polisher inscribed J. BULLOCH (this WWI period, his father having served from 1918 and survived the war), newspaper cuttings, a letter from the family who agreed to tend his grave after he was reburried in 1947, further letter from this family, his church in Coatbridge for where he was organist, contained in a burr walnut caseNote: Bullock enlisted aged 18 on the 4/5/1944. His diary tracks his first posting, 1st entry 1st Jan 1945: Think that we are leaving Langholm at last. Final preparations. Received parcel from mother also card. Parade 8PM. Arrived Carlisle 11PM. Phone home for last time.; there are then daily entries until 8th February: Into Battle; with X for the next six days until 15th February: Shrapnel wound in head at 9:30 AM. Heavily wounded and Sey. and Bill killed. Not serious, but very lucky to be alive. Syd[?] and I sent back. Glad to be out.; he would die one week later on the 23rd April. His Notification of Death noting ...died of wounds in Western Europe... while serving with the Allied Expeditionarly Force.

STRAIN QEII comprising the British Empire Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Service Medal with Northern Ireland clasp, and the Long Service in the Naval Reserve Medal with two bars (this inscribed replacement after Strain's details), all inscribed for CPO T.R. STRAIN J/D980754H RNR, also a copy of an article detailing his awarding of the B.E.M.Note: As per article, 'The Royal seal of approval has been given to two CWS employees, who spend much of their spare time helping others. Ross Strain, 50, who is assistant management accountant for Retail Operations Group, has been awarded the BEM for his services to the Royal Naval Reserve... Mr. Strain's association with the Royal Nacy began back in the 1950s, when he did two years' national service. Now Chief Petty Officer with the Reserve, he has special responsibility for looking after new entries to the organisation's Clyde Division, based in Glasgow. He gives up at least two nights a week to devote to his duties, which include the training of new recruits.'

DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL GROUP AWARDED TO PTE. JAMES MCRAE WWI comprising The 1914-15 Star, The War Medal, The Victory Medal (insc. 2128... HIGH:L.I.) and The Distinguished Conduct Medal (insc. 240470... 1/6 HIGH L.I. - T.F.), along with a photograph of himself, his discharge certificate, two copies of the an excerpt from the London Gazette of 26th January 1918 detailing award of DCM 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a stretcher bearer. His work involved carrying men across the open, often under shell fire, for distance up to 600 yards. In spite of these dangerous and trying conditions he showed the greatest energy and a splendid disregard of personal safety in the discharge of his duties.',Note: James Mcrae joined the 1/6 Highland Light Infantry territorial force in Glasgow in September 1914 and served throughout the entire war. He fought in Gallipoli in 1915 for which he was awarded the 1914-15 star. From there he went to Egypt and then Palestine and is mentioned in dispatches on 28 June 1917, before winning the DCM on 22 October 1917.

An Early Pair of Voigtlander Binoculars, engraved 'Major Heneage VIII Hussars' IR220833 Clement Walker Heneage, VC was a brave and courageous British Army officer who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his outstanding bravery during the Indian Mutiny. He was born on 6 March 1831 and died on 9 December 1901, leaving behind an inspiring legacy of bravery and selflessness.Heneage was born in Kent, England, and was educated at Eton before joining the British Army in 1849 as an ensign in the 8th (The King's Royal Irish) Hussars. He served in various campaigns throughout his military career, including the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and the Second Anglo-Afghan War.During the Indian Mutiny, Heneage was serving as a lieutenant in the 2nd Bengal European Fusiliers when he performed the acts of bravery that earned him the Victoria Cross. On 1 July 1857, Heneage was part of a small group of soldiers who were besieged in a building by mutineers in Delhi. The mutineers set fire to the building, and Heneage helped to carry his wounded comrades to safety despite being severely burned himself.Heneage's bravery did not end there. On 9 July 1857, he was part of a small force that was ambushed by mutineers near the village of Badli-ki-Serai. Heneage led a charge against the mutineers, despite being severely outnumbered, and managed to drive them back. His bravery and leadership in this battle earned him a Mention in Despatches.Heneage's next major engagement came during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, where he served as a captain in the 9th Lancers. He was part of the British force that captured Kabul in September 1879, and he played a key role in the Battle of Charasiab on 6 October 1879. Heneage led a charge against the Afghan forces, which helped to secure victory for the British.For his outstanding bravery throughout his military career, Heneage was awarded several prestigious awards and medals, including the Victoria Cross, the Mention in Despatches, and the Afghan War Medal. Heneage's Victoria Cross is now on display at the National Army Museum in London, where it serves as a testament to his bravery and dedication to duty.In conclusion, Clement Walker Heneage, VC was an exceptional soldier who demonstrated unwavering courage and bravery throughout his military career. A rare South Staffordshire commemorative patch box, c.1800, printed in manganese with an angel holding a shield bearing the portrait of King George III, in her other hand a shield deflecting the course of an arrow, inscribed 'God Save the King' and 'May no weapon form'd against him prosper', raised on a dark blue base, fitted with an internal mirror, a little cracking, 5.2cm.Provenance: from the estate of the late Barry Lock.The print on the box relates to a failed assassination attempt on George III on 15th May 1800, when James Hadfield fired a shot at the king during the singing of the national anthem at the Drury Lane Theatre. The medal from which this print was taken was designed by P. Kempson.

A South Staffordshire enamel snuff box of naval interest, c.1780, the oval form painted with a portrait of Admiral Keppel, reserved in a raised scrollwork border on a pale blue ground, the sides with flower sprays, some cracking and restoration to the base, 5.7cm.Provenance: from the estate of the late Barry Lock.Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel, served during the Seven Years War, and later as First Lord of the Admiralty during the War of American Independence. Charges of misconduct were brought against him by Vice Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser following the battle of Ushant, but following a court martial, Keppel was honourably acquitted. The portrait on this box is after a medal by T Lyng, struck in 1779 to commemorate his acquittal.
