Antony Donaldson (British, 1939)Mulsanne Straight signed, titled and dated 'ANTONY DONALDSON/1964/MULSANNE STRAIGHT' (verso)oil on canvas93 x 93 cm. (36 5/8 x 36 5/8 in.)(unframed)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Rowan Gallery, London, where acquired by the family of the present ownerPrivate Collection, GreeceMulsanne Straight is named after the famous 3.7-mile stretch of road which forms part of the Le Mans circuit and depicts three stacked images of a Ford GT40, rendered in the blue and white of the American team. The Americans raced three prototype GT40s at the 1964 Le Mans race (numbers 10, 11 and 12) and here Donaldson has selected number 11, which was driven by Richie Ginther and Masten Gregory. Whilst none of the GT40s completed the race that year, the car set a new record for the fastest race lap in Le Mans history at 3:49.2secs.Mulsanne Straight was painted in 1964, a year after Donaldson's acclaimed first one-man show at the Rowan Gallery (from which the Tate purchased the painting Take Five), and the same year that Donaldson was selected by Bryan Robertson as one of twelve young artists to exhibit in the first 'The New Generation' show at the Whitechapel gallery.Motorsport imagery formed an important component of Donaldson's work in the early sixties. His race cars are sleek, alluring, and iconic, mirroring the pin-up imagery which he employed in his Pop Art of the period, or as Donaldson termed it – New Figuration. Donaldson's earlier race car works include Medal for Jim Clark, 1962 (Collection of Leicester County Council), For Jim Clark, 1963 and South African Grand Prix, 1963. Each of these works depict the British racing driver Jim Clark and British built Lotus cars. Mulsanne Straight differentiates itself by its American subject and was a sign of things to come. Exciting developments across the Atlantic, not just in auto racing but in many aspects of culture, increasingly turned Donaldson's attention stateside and he would subsequently move to Los Angeles in 1966.We are grateful to the Artist for his assistance in cataloguing the present work. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
