QSA TO ALFRED CUDMORE OF HMS MONARCH QSA Cape Colony - A Cudmore AB HMS Monarch NEFAlfred Cudmore was born in Plymouth on January 3rd 1870; he enlisted in the Royal Navy on January 3rd 1888. He served in the Second Boer war onboard HMS Monarch and was awarded the Queens' South Africa Medal with Cape Colony Clasp. He was discharged in May 1901.

George William Sweatman was born in Gillingham, Kent on 19th December 1870. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2Cl on December 19th 1888.During the Second Boer War, he served on HMS Tartar as a Petty Officer 1st Class. He was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with Cape Colony Bar. Sweatman remained in the Royal Navy and was awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1905. During the Great War, he served on HMS Pembroke 1 for the entire duration. He was invalided out of the Navy with organic heart disease in 1920.
THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE RUSSIAN ORDER OF ST ANNE MEDAL OF DISTINCTION FOR FOREIGNERS TO SKIPPER DIXON RNR 1914/15 Star correctly impressed - W.S.A. 1777 A.W. Dixon SKR. .R.N.R.Condition = GVF Russian Order of St Anne, Medal of Distinction for Foreigners in gold. 1911 Pattern, enamel, and hallmarked '56' gold. Made in Edouard, St. Petersburg by Varvara Dietwald of Edouard. Engraved ' Imperial Russian Order of St Anne, conferred by the Czar on the most honored A. W. Dixon Skpr R.N.R 1915' Condition - near mint, the enamel is perfect. The pair and Mercantile Marine Medal are not present with the group; the family believe the recipient lost them while out on the town. Alfred William Dixon was born in Hull, Yorkshire, on 24th March 1883. Alfred spent his working life at sea; on 29th May 1903, he was granted a certificate of competency as a Second Mate of a foreign going ship. Dixon was granted his Masters rating on 31st Amy 1907. On 18th May 1915, Dixon joined the Royal Naval Reserve as a Skipper. He commanded the Hull-based trawler 'St CYR' In Spring 1915, the Germans tasked the Minelayer Meteor to undertake a mine laying operation in the White Sea. The aim was to stop incoming supplies to the Russian Army and exports to the allies. The Royal Navy responded by sending Minesweeping trawlers to remove them, ' St CYR' was among the group of 8 trawlers. Dixon's service papers note he was ' Awarded Medal of Distinction of the Order of St Anne of Russia' It is highly likely that he was awarded this for Operations in the White Sea. Sadly his service papers are very faint in some areas. They show Dixon was arrested in July 1916 for improperly leaving his ship unanchored. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was deprived of 20 days pay. Dixon was invalided out of the RNR in November 1916 due to being physically unfit. He did carry on working at sea, serving with the Mercantile Marine in the 1920s. Alfred died on the 12th of January 1939; at the time, he was on board SS Surreybrook of Fowey Harbour Cornwall. On the 5th May 1922, he shared Naval prize money with a Russian ships Captain, which may relate to his war service in the White Sea.

He joined the Royal Navy on September 1st 1914, a large portion of his service during the Great War was on HMS Blanche, which was present at Jutland but did not fire her guns. Watson was awarded the LSGC in 1928. For his service during the Second World War, he was awarded the British Empire Medal on January 1st 1945.

Victory Medal - 310314 J C Biles SPO RNWith Anchor brooch in HMS Bulwark tobacco tine.Condition GVF.John Charles Biles was a Kitchen Attendant from Southampton. He joined the Royal Navy in 1906. He was posted to HMS Bulwark in August 1914 and was killed on November 26th 1914, when the ship exploded due to improperly stored ammunition.Seven hundred forty-one men were killed, with only a dozen ratings rescued. All the officers were killed in the accident.

He joined the Royal Navy on May 6th 1914. He was present at the Battle of Jutland on HMS King George. Knight survived the war and was awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1931.

Humphrey Mark Wilson was born Williton, West Somerset in 1912. The son of Bernard William Wilson, whose medals are also in the sale. Humphrey was commissioned in the Indian Army on December 3rd 1933, as a Second Lieutenant. He subsequently transferred to the Norfolk Regiment and was promoted to Captain on September 3rd 1940. Captain Humphrey was awarded the Military Cross in 1945 for the following deeds; 'During the period February 1st to April 30th 45, this officer was outstanding on several occasions by his courage, his enthusiasm and his tirelessness. During the battle of Lingen on April 5th stiff fighting was met in house clearing for possession of the town. This offr was ordered to take temporary comd of a coy whose had been wounded and which had lost several cas. This coy's adv was held up by an enemy strong point from which three Spandau posns comd all approaches. Stalking fwd himself under point-blank fire from one of this Spandau's, he reached a point about 30 yds distant from which, with his rifle, he despatched the firer concerned. Moving around all his subunits, though under close-range fire most of the time, he quickly reorganised the coy for a further attack and instilled into them fresh confidence. Under his inspiring leadership, the flanking movement against this strong point met with overwhelming success. Yet again, during the battle of Brinkum on 15/16 Apr this offr's imperturbable cheerfulness and disregard of personal danger had a most marked effect on one of the coys. Which was temporarily checked by a strongly defended factory. Moving down with a fresh section of crocodiles, he made a recce from Op to Op, each time coming under short-range Spandau and sniper fire, so that the crocodiles could get off to the best possible start and be sure of the best routes to take in their advance. As a result of this, the attack took on a renewed turn of speed and opposition was shortly completely overcome. This officer has been 2IC of this Bn since D-Day. Throughout this period, he has never failed to show a degree of courage, unselfishness, of cheerfulness and spirit that have directly influenced several engagements in which the Bn has been involved'.. In the post-war years, he served in South East Asia and Palestine, earning a two-bar GSM. As a Major, he served in the Korean War and retired in 1961. Major Wilson died in 2003.

CRIMEA PAIR TO SCOTT, 68TH REGT Crimea 1854-56 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol. Officially impressed - C.Scott. 68th Regt Turkish Crimea - unnamed.Condition GVF (edge bruise above surname, which doesn't affect the naming) Charles Scott served with the Durham Light Infantry during the Crimean War. The medal and the clasps are confirmed on the roll; Scott had previously served on Malta January 1st 1851 to March 31st 1851.
MEMORIAL PLAQUE TO 2ND LIEUT MOXLY BEDFORDSHIRE REGT With prayer book.John Hewitt Sutton Moxly was born in Woolwich, Kent on December 27th 1891. He was educated at Victoria College, Jersey, where he won the gold medal for classics and was head of his school. He won a King Charles I scholarship at Oxford University and had served in the OTC there. Moxly was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Bn Bedfordshire Regiment on August 21st 1914. Moxly landed in France on January 2nd 1915, and was sadly killed in action on March 12th 1915, after having spent much of the previous two months in the line. He was shot through the heart while lifting a wire entanglement over a parapet that the Germans had previously destroyed with mortars. His commanding officer wrote, 'It was the death of a brave and devoted gentleman. He was always the same: resourceful, alert, loved by officers and men, as good an officer as one could ever wish to meet.' He was laid to rest in Ramparts Cemetery, Ypres.

He may have reenlisted during the Great War into the DLI, with service number 19731. However, this set of papers state that he had never served before.

He was a Coal Miner by occupation. He served during the Second Boer War and was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony & South Africa 1902. At the time of the 1911 census, he was living and working in Hexham; Aynsley re-enlisted during the Great War and was awarded a Pair. He stayed in the army post-war and was awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal, having been re-numbered 4435055. William passed away in 1959.

The 1891 census shows that he was living at 52 Brodwick Street, South Shields; in the 1901 census, he was living at 76 Heron Street, South Shields. The 1911 census finds him working as a Bread and Pastry Baker, living at 23 Eaglesfield Road South Shields. Young served in India; medal index card gives his disembarkation date as 21st August 1915. Also awarded the Indian General Service Medal with bar Afghanistan North West Frontier 1919. IGS and LSGC are both confirmed on the medal index card. LSGC being a 1927 award.The group comes with a cased medal engraved to Bds Young H.

In civilian life, he worked as a Dyer. During the Great War, he served in the 13th Bn of the Durham Light Infantry, landing in France on August 25th 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal announced in the London Gazette on January 25th 1918. He survived the war and passed away in 1973.

He had previously served in the Durham with service number 2900, joining up in 1887 and being discharged after 21 years in 1908. He didn't receive a medal during this period of service. He served the whole of the Great War at home and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on June 3rd 1919. His rank was Temporary Regimental Sergeant Major.

Crimea Medal; Sebastopol officially impressed - David Finney 68th RegtNew Zealand undated - engraved 3690 Pte D Finney 68th FootTurkish Crimea unnamed as issued.Condition - VF David Finney was born in Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland, in 1826. He attested in early 1854; his civilian occupation was a Blacksmith. Finney served eleven months in Crimea and New Zealand from January 8th 1864, to March 10th 1866. Finney was discharged on October 1st 1867, his medals are confirmed on the roll and in his service papers.
