AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY BRONZED PLASTER MALE CLASSICAL FIGUREBY HUMPPHREY HOPPER The Trojan hero, Paris, wearing a Phrygian cap, inscribed and dated '1822 H. Hopper'110cm high overallCatalogue Note:Humphrey Hopper (b.1767) was the famed sculpture of the monument to General Hay in St Paul's Cathedral. He attended the Royal Academy schools and in 1803 was awarded a gold medal for his sculpture group 'Death of Meleager'. His work consists of a wide range of decorative classical figures in plaster, terracotta and composition, usually designed as decorative lighting supports. A set of four figures by Hopper was supplied to William, 2nd Baron Bolton for Hackwood Park and placed in alcoves in the Dining Room. Condition Report: There are some marks, scratches, knocks, chips, rubbing and abrasions consistent with age and use.Overall there is some rubbing including to the edges and protruding areas, revealing the underlying paler plaster.
