Victory Medal to 436538 Sjt T Heaps C.G.A. Awarded the Military Medal 22/7/1916 with 49th Bn att. T.M.Bty. 'Great gallantry and devotion to duty June 2nd 1916. Pte Heaps alone remained unwounded of the crew of one of the guns C.3.X.Bty. He served the gun alone until all the available ammunition was exhausted. Then, when the enemy were again upon him, he seized a rifle and joined with the Infantry in repelling the attack. He remained with the Infantry for a further 24 hours acting as a stretcher bearer'. Killed In Action with 3rd Div Trench Mortar Bty Canadian Field Artillery 30/3/1918. Buried La Targette British Cemetery. (1)

Captain Fryatt - Harwich Interest. A large water-colour of the famous Harwich ship the S.S. Brussel captained by Charles Fryatt. Fryatt & the Brussels were captured after Fryatt had tried to ram the submarine U33 near the Maas Lightship on 28.3.16. Fryatt was captured with the ship on 26.7.16. and executed after a brief trial. He is one of Harwich's great heroes. The painting is signed by A.J. Jansen & dated R'dam 1916. Vendor states: It was formally the property of G.W.A Mitchell a deck boy on the Brussels who was captured with Fryatt and spent the rest of the war in a German P.O.W. Camp. Jansen is known to have produced at least 5 other paintings of the Brussels and these were exhibited at the Fryatt Exhibition in Harwich in 2016 along with Mitchell's. This painting is also illustrated in the Great War Medal Collector Companion along with details of Mitchell. A copy of the book is included with the lot. Painting is in a contemporary frame and hung for many years in Geroge Mitchell's living room. Picture measures: 29" x 24" (frame). (2)
