Commemorative Medals from the Eisen India Collection, East india Railway Company, unissued Silver Medal “For Loyalty”, c.1911, armorial shield above winged wheel, rev cartouche for recipient’s name above wreath, 31.5mm (Pudd 911.1.4, R3; Swan -). Extremely fine, but edge nick on reverse at 5 o’clock. The obverse is shared with a medal issued “For Services Rendered During the Railway Journeys of their majesties … 1911”, and this medal is believed to have been issued at the same time bought R Margolis

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, Henry VIII, Bronze Portrait Medal, c.1524, uniface cast, possibly Continental workmanship, bearded bust left, wearing large hat and ornate cloak, HENRICVS VIII GD REX ANGL FRANC DOMI, 59mm (cf MI 30/14). Very fine with dark patination, extremely rare. The medal is an old re-working or restitution of a unique lead medal, formerly in the Bute Collection (lot 13) and illustrated in the MI Plates from an electrotype copy. The DG in the legend has been reversed and DOM H has become DOMI. A smaller version is also known, this having a Tudor Rose on the reverse (MI 30/15). The similarity in the workmanship of this medal when compared with others of the Count d’Egmont and Charles V would seem to suggest a medallist from the Netherlands rather than Hans Daucher, to whom Henry Grunthal attributed the later (Portcullis reverse) portrait medal of 1526 (ANS, Museum Notes, 1958). Another example was offered by Bonhams, 19 October, 1993 (lot 151 - 520)

A high quality cast on thin flan, good very fine and toned.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, Charles I, The Marriage of William, Prince of Orange (1626-1647-1650) and Princess Mary (1631-1660), Silver Medal, 1641, by Johann Blum, the couple join hands beneath rays from the Holy Dove, cherubs above, Palace to left, rev William as Palas, with military trophies around, attended by Victory, Bellonam Princeps Pallas …, 71mm (MI 287/100; vL II, 251). Good extremely fine. Mary Henrietta Stuart, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange-Nassau, the eldest daughter of Charles I. The marriage took place on the 2nd May, at the Chapel Royal, Whitehall Palace, but because of her young age Princess Mary only went to Holland in 1642 (with her mother) and the marriage was not consummated for several years. The couple’s only child, the future William III, was born in 1650, shortly after his father’s death from smallpox.

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, Charles II, Sir Samuel Morland, Silver Medal, 1681, by John Roettier, laureate bust of Charles II with flowing hair, rev legend IN ADVERSIS SVMMO VITAE PERICVLO IN PROPERIS FELICI INGENIO FREQVENS ADFVIT, lettered edge, SAMVEL MORLANDVS EQ QVR ET BAR, 33mm (MI I 582/257). Darkly toned, very fine with MI number 257 stuck to the reverse. Sir Samuel Morland (1625-1695), diplomatist, mathematician and inventor. The medals are said to have been struck by Morland after his appointment as ‘Master of Mechanics’, and were dedicated to the King. In old age he went blind and invented a machine for writing, and a mechanical calendar of sorts, as well as a pumping system to water his garden. bought Spink, April 1908, and believed ex Helen Farquhar Collection (whose habit it was to stick numbers on gummed paper onto her medals).

BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Great Britain, James II, The Landing of William of Orange at Torbay, Silver Medal, 1688, by R Arondeaux, William as Roman Emperor tramples on serpent of discord and joins hands with Britannia, rev boats landing at a fortified harbour, CONTRA INFANTEM PERDITIONIS, 49mm (MI I 639/65; Woolf 3:8). Extremely fine, toned and rare. One reading of this protestant medal is that William of Orange comes to England to restore liberties lost to James, Prince of Wales. Another interpretation is that the medal denounces the Pope, who was at the time widely believed to be the Antichrist, called the Son of Perdition by St Paul.

Lightly toned, good very fine and rare. Admiral Edward Russell (1653-1727), 1st Earl of Orford, Commander-in-Chief; Sir John Ashby (c. 1640 – July 12, 1693), Commander of the Blue Squadron; Sir Ralph Delaval, Commander of the Red Squadron (which burnt the Le Soleil Royal); and Admiral van Allemonde Commander-in-Chief of the Dutch fleet.

He was an able administrator and military strategist, and was invested in April 1702 as “Generalissimo of all Forces by Land and Sea” and then in May as “Lord High Admiral of England and Ireland”.
