Very Fine. With India Office letter verifying eligibility for medals; letter congratulating recipient on award of the Military Cross (addressed to Major E B Teesdale, MC, Indian Army); Colonial Office letter congratulating recipient on his CMG, and EIIR Coronation medal award document named to Edmund Brinsley Teesdale Esq MC.Plate 1 Note: Major Teesdale, born 30th September 1915 in Shanghai, was educated at Oxford and served in the Colonial Office, Hong Kong just prior to World War II. During the Japanese advance on Hong Kong he escaped to China where he became involved with guerrilla training. In 1942 he was gazetted with an Emergency Commission, Indian Army (London Gazette 11.7.1942) and joined Eastern Command, and was seconded to “V Force” (based in Jorhat) his time being involved with gaining intelligence from various hill tribesmen of Nagaland. He was then attached to the British Army Aid Group (BAAG) in the Kweilin-Lipu area of Kwangsi Province, China during the Japanese offensive. Parties from the BAAG demolished all road bridges for 40 miles NE of Kweilin and mined bridges on the Kweilin-Lipu-Liuchow road in their scorched earth policy. These actions stalled the Japanese advance and allowed the 14th USAAF to continue using Liuchow as a base for their bombing missions. Colonel L. T. Ride of the BAAG wrote “Major Teesdale’s courage, technical skill and devotion to duty were leading factors in the success of these operations and his example was a great inspiration to the Chinese Forces with whom he established most cordial relations”. Major Teesdale’s Military Cross (London Gazette 5th November 1946) was for service “engaged in Special Operations South East Asia”. Post war Major Teesdale remained with the Colonial Office in Hong Kong and, in the June 1964 birthday honours, was awarded the C.M.G. as Colonial Secretary, Hong Kong. Some of his wartime exploits, including demolition activities, are included in his 3 volume diary housed at the Imperial War Museum. Received directly from the family.
