The Waterloo medal. To James Broad of the 1st Battalion of the 32nd of foot (Cornwall) regiment. with a non-original split ring loop but the correct ribbon. 3.4 cm diameter. NOTE: It has been speculated that the 32nd of the foot could be the 52nd of foot given the damage to the top of the numeral.Condition report: Some denting to the rim and edge and some knocks to the obverse and reverse.
A 19th century mahogany cased folding botanist's magnifying glass bearing a label documenting the origin of the item, and inscribed in ink on the outer ' This glass belonged to my great grandfather the Reverend Joseph Dole of Stockport......' 10.5 diameter.Together with other items including miser's purses, Karthoum golf club silver medal, tortoiseshell calling card case, Goburg desk seal set and other items.Condition report: The magnifying glass with two shell shaped and smaller chips to the outer edges of the glass. A small chip to the outer case, locking clasp missing. The wood case is a nice colour.
Book of Bomber Command Heroes, an extraordinary WWII interest autograph book. 230 autographs including Many DFC, AFC MID medal holders. Sadly over 80 were killed and many shot down and held as POWs. Comes with hundreds of pages of research on all the autograph. A unique collection of autographs, poems, sketches collected by schoolboy Raymond Harry Spalding, who lived close to the RAF bases at Mildenhall and Lakenheath in Suffolk. His personal autograph album contains over 230 signatures, dated between March 1941 and November 1942, from Bomber crews serving in the Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal New Zealand Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force and volunteers from the USA. Most of the crews have signed together on the same pages, adding their aircraft call signs (e.g. O Orange, T Tommy, N Nuts, V Victor, C Charlie, P Peter, D's Crew, U's crew) and their ranks/roles e.g. Flying Officer Pilot, Sgt Bomb Aimer, Navigator, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, Front / Rear Gunner & Observer. Some have added their Squadron. Most are from 149 and 115 Sqns with others from 419 and 57 Sqns. Some have added their own personal touches in the form of poems verses, proverbs, comic remarks and drawings which include Pinocchio, Goofy, a Wellington Bomber and a Flying 'Jumbo' elephant. Others have added words of wisdom for young Raymond. On several pages, there are some army signatures, 149 Sqn was involved in the famous wartime propaganda film "Target For Tonight" which was filmed at RAF Mildenhall in 1941. The signatures include Sgt William McCabe (rear gunner) who featured in the film, with a pasted-in contemporary news clip stating he was now training to be a pilot. Names include. Sausmarez (Ronald Philip Stanley de, 1880/1-1973, Commander RN). Album of watercolour jeux d'esprit, 1947-54. Oblong folio (262 x 300 mm), contemporary 'Reedsdale' post-bound half morocco album, containing 39 postal covers expertly illustrated in pen-and-ink and watercolour with various scenes and caricatures including 4 of dancing fairies, 2 from the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and Alice's meeting with the King and Queen of Hearts), Father Christmas driving a sleigh, the Chelsea Flower Show, seals on an ice floe, an 18th-century rendezvous between a shepherd and his lover, Humpty Dumpty, a parade of anthropomorphic cats in the style of Louis Wain, a group of shipwrecked mariners on a raft with a sea-monster in the foreground, and various other scenes and caprices, all skilfully incorporating the address of the recipient (N. F. Pasbach, later Mrs R. de Sausmarez), together with 9 watercolours of exotic bird and plant species with accompanying manuscript light verse (e.g. nutmeg, sunbirds, the coffee-plant, each 190 x 150 mm or reverse), 9 smaller watercolours comprising a partial alphabet of exotic species (e.g. 'T is for Tamarind'; 'Y is for Yucca'; 'Z is for the Zapote', each 91 x 61 mm), and a few similar items, all mounted rectos and versos to black card album leaves (qty: 1) 'Ronald de Sausmarez was born in 1880 or 1881. He married Nora Frances Pasbach in 1947. He joined the Royal Navy and served as a Midshipman in HMS Royal Arthur, from 1897. He was promoted acting Sub-Lieutenant in HMS Blake, from 1901. He served as a Lieutenant in HMS Formidable, 1903-4, and HMS Psyche, from 1904. In 1908, he was placed on the retired list. He joined HM Naval Base, Holyhead, to plan offensive measures against submarines, March 1918. He was promoted to the acting rank of Commander and appointed Senior Naval Officer of the base, August 1918-19. Post War Parachute Regiment Arnhem D.C.M. Winner Tunic dark blue patrol tunic. Single breasted, high collar. Pleated chest pockets with buttoned flaps. Lower hidden pockets with plain flaps. Shoulder straps with maroon edging. Left arm with bullion embroidery, QC cross standards. Left breast with MBE, DCM, WW2 medal ribbons with MiD, GSM, LS & GC, MSM. Internal label named "Bentley T.C". Together with his maroon beret with anodised, QC Parachute Regiment badge. 2 buttons and wings absent from tunic. Sergeant Bentley dropped into Oosterbeek 18th Sept 1944 with the Mortar Platoon 10th Parachute Batt. 20th Sept, held the top floor of a house on the North East perimeter. The house was hit and he fell from the top floor to the basement. He then carried on operating under heavy fire.
