To Mr. G. C. Brooke for Gallantry in saving life on the 5th August - 1879, Board of Trade Large Silver Medal for Life at Sea in original case of issue. On 30 October 1879, the Government of India forwarded to the India Office an extract from a letter written by Captain Methven of the P&O ship Kaisar-i-Hind. Captain Methven wished to notify his employers and the authorities of the gallant act of bravery on the part of one of his officers in rescuing one of his shipmates from drowning. Correspondence in a file in the India Office Records described the rescue. This occurred at 10 am on 5 August, when an Indian seaman fell from the foreyard (the lowest yard on a ship's foremast) on to the awning and then overboard, striking an awning stanchion on the way and sustaining several injuries in the process. The alarm was raised, but the seaman was quickly swept astern of the ship. A life-buoy was thrown to the stricken man but he was too weak to hold on to it. As described by the Captain, the second officer G C Brookes made a full spring and took the water close to the spot, felt the lascar with his feet at this time below the water let himself sink and clenched him; but there were several instants before Mr Brookes came to the surface. A rope was thrown, which Brookes was able to grab while holding tightly to the Indian seaman, and both men were pulled aboard the ship. Of the rescue Captain Methven wrote: The act was as prompt as it was gallant. The tide ran dangerously strong. The man was stunned and disabled, and an instant later and he was inevitable gone…. Altogether it was well done. https://blogs.bl.uk/untoldlives/2022/04/rescue-at-sea-of-a-man-overboard-.html

KARL HAGENAUER (Austria, 1898 - 1956)."Figure of a horse", ca.1925-30.Sculpture in brass, with marble base.Size: 24 x 28 x 3 cm (sculpture)+ 2 cm (base). The son of the goldsmith Carl Hagenauer, Karl studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna, where he was taught by Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and imbued with the spirit of the Wiener Wekstätte. After obtaining his diploma in architecture, he did military service between 1917 and 1919, and on his return he began to work as an architect and in his father's studio. During these years he created numerous pieces in silver, brass, copper, enamel, ivory, stone and wood. In 1928, after his father's death, he took over the management of the workshop and was responsible for the expansion of the firm, extending production to cabinetmaking and opening shops in Vienna and Salzburg. Since then he has exhibited his best pieces both in Austria and abroad, was twice awarded the gold medal at the Milan Triennale and was made a member of the Austrian Werkbund and the Werkstätte. His works are now in collections all over the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the MoMA and the Jewish Museum in New York, the Casa Lis in Salamanca and many others.
SANTIAGO RUSIÑOL I PRATS (Barcelona, 1861 - Aranjuez, Madrid, 1931)."Female portrait", ca.1890.Oil on canvas.Signed in the lower right corner.Size: 41 x 30 cm; 58 x 47 cm (frame).Among other pictorial genres, Santiago Rusiñol excelled in the genre of portraiture, especially female portraits. His gallery of self-absorbed, melancholic and withdrawn women is in keeping with the fin-de-siècle decadent taste. In the case of this young woman with her slanted gaze and half-closed eyelids, the face hides from direct contemplation, thus preserving its mystery and keeping it at a distance. The colourful, almost impressionistic brushstrokes with which the costumes, the patterned mantilla, the pleats, etc., are reproduced contrast with the naturalistic definition of the facial features. Rusiñol flirted with various avant-garde movements then in vogue, but his artistic personality stands out above specific styles.Rusiñol was one of the main ideologists of the Catalan modernist movement. He trained as a disciple of Tomás Moragas and frequented the Centre of Watercolourists. He made his debut in 1884 at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, together with his friends Ramón Casas and Enric Clarasó. In those years he made a carriage trip around Catalonia with Casas, taking sketches of types and landscapes. The year 1888 marked a turning point in his career, as he began three new activities: he took part in the Paris Salon and held his first solo exhibition at the Sala Parés. The following year, 1889, Rusiñol settled in Paris, in the Montmartre district, with Utrillo, Clarasó and Canudas. He attended the academy of the painter Henri Gervex, and completed his training with Puvis de Chavannes and Carrière. The ruralism he had adopted in Barcelona disappeared and his style evolved towards naturalism. He also came closer to the thematic, but not technical, approaches of the Impressionists, as well as to their desire to capture a fleeting snapshot. In 1890 he established a relationship with Sitges, where he painted some of his first courtyards and gardens, a theme that would define his later style. That same year he held his first exhibition at the Sala Parés, together with Casas and Clarasó. In 1890 he returned to Paris with Casas and Utrillo. At this time he concentrated on depicting the entertainment venues of the area, such as the Moulin de la Galette, which featured in many of his paintings. However, in 1893 he left his studio in Montmartre and moved to the Île Saint-Louis. The following year he travelled to Italy with Zuloaga. On his return he exhibited the paintings made on this trip in what was to be his first personal exhibition at the Sala Parés. That same year he inaugurated the Cau Ferrat in Sitges, the seed of today's museum. In 1895 he made his first trip to Granada, and began the series "Gardens of Spain". In 1897 he produced some of his best paintings of gardens, an interest that also appears in his literary work "The Abandoned Garden", in which he cultivates a symbolist decadence. Around this time he exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Indépendants, at the Exposition Nationale and at the gallery of Samuel Bing, the main promoter of Art Nouveau in France. The latter, a solo exhibition held in 1899, brought international recognition to Rusiñol, whose success was based on a new vision of Spain, totally free of clichés and full of truth. From then on his activity multiplied as a painter, novelist and comedian, he premiered outstanding works in Madrid and Barcelona and held annual painting exhibitions at the Sala Parés, always with Casas and Clarasó. In 1908 he was awarded the medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He is represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Museo Camón Aznar in Zaragoza and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, among others.
JULIÁN GRAU SANTOS (Canfranc, Huesca, 1937)."Sunset in Cuenca".Oil on canvas.Signed on the lower right. Signed, titled and located on the back. With Sala Parés label on the back.Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 101 x 88 cm (frame).Julián Grau Santos was linked from a very young age to the city of Cuenca, where he lived in the sixties at the height of the effervescence of abstract art, although his painting was figurative in nature. Grau Santos, especially known for his portraits, landscapes and still lifes, and to whom the writer Raúl Torres dedicated the book 'La Cuenca de Grau Santos', has never considered himself a classical painter, but "modern, because I live, and I like all painting of good taste, abstract painting and painters such as Mondrian, Matisse, Bonart, Picasso. I have always been very open-minded".Son of Emilio Grau Sala and Ángeles Santos Torroella, he trained in Barcelona. In 1949 he made several trips to Paris, where he had the opportunity to see first-hand works by Sisley, Van Gogh and various Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. He held his first solo exhibition at the Sala Libros in Saragossa in 1957. Since then he has held solo exhibitions at the Syra, Rovira and Vayreda galleries in Barcelona; Alas, Abril, El Cisne, Collage and Biosca in Madrid; Justin Lester in Los Angeles, Art Roman in Tokyo, etc. Since 1966 he has exhibited regularly as a solo artist at the Sala Parés in Barcelona, and in 1968 he took part in the Salon des Artistes Français at the Grand Palais in Madrid. His work, linked to expressionism and very much based on colour, is characterised by a very elaborate technique and a profound knowledge of drawing. He also produced numerous drawings, which were published in various newspapers and magazines. His awards include the La Rambla Prize (Barcelona, 1961), the Ramón Rogent Medal (Salón de Mayo, Barcelona, 1962), the medal of the Fine Arts Exhibition (Madrid, 1961), the 3rd Sant Jordi Prize and Van Gogh Prize (Barcelona, 1963), the City of Barcelona Medal (1965), the Huesca Painting Biennial Prize (1976), the Countess of Barcelona Medal (Madrid, 1983) and the Medal of Honour in the BMW Competition (Madrid, 1987). In recent years he has participated in the ARCO fairs in Madrid and ARTEXPO in Valencia, Barcelona, Basel, New York, Chicago, Miami and Hong Kong. In 1993 the Mapfre Vida Foundation in Madrid dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him.
JOAN ROIG SOLER (Barcelona, 1852-1909)."View of Cadaqués".Oil on canvas.Signed in the lower left corner.Measurements: 51 x 43 cm; 70 x 58 cm (frame). In this landscape the artist reproduces a view of Cadaqués. The painting is flooded by the warm Mediterranean light. Subtle, frayed low clouds surround the white fishermen's houses perched on the shore, as well as the boats stranded on the sand and the fishing gear. Blues, whites and siennas form the basis of the chromatic range, with the occasional green or red counterpoint.Joan Roig Soler began his training with Modest Urgell and later completed his apprenticeship by travelling to the great art capitals of Paris and Rome. Closely linked to Sitges, in this town he started, together with Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, the informal Catalan Luminist School. Devoted to landscape, he cultivated the coastal environments of Blanes, Tossa, Cadaqués, Mallorca, etc., but also the urban landscape (Barcelona, etc.) and the Pyrenees. His work clearly shows his preoccupation with light and his desire to break with the pictorial lyricism of the time. He practised a style close to impressionism which preceded the modernism of Santiago Rusiñol and Ramón Casas, who came into contact with Sitges thanks to him. He exhibited in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, etc. He was awarded the third medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1887, and won prizes at the Paris (1895), Barcelona (1896) and Saragossa Exhibitions. He is represented in the collections of the Museums of Modern Art in Barcelona and Madrid.
VIRGILIO GERBOLÉS MOLINERO (Valladolid, 1874-. 1944).Vírgenes cristianas expuestas al populacho" ("Christian Virgins exposed to the mob"), 1899.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner.Size: 145 x 200 cm; 186 x 238 cm (frame). In this work the author, Virgilio Gerbolés, reproduces the painting by the famous Filipino artist Félix Resurrección Hidalgo. The work was executed in Rome, and in 1884 it was presented at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid, where it won a second medal. The interest and good consideration it received at the exhibition led to the government acquiring the piece, and it was deposited in the Museum of Valladolid, where it remained until 1936, when it was destroyed by fire.Virgilio Gerbolés Molinero taught drawing at the School of Fine Arts and Artistic Trades in Valladolid and was a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of the Immaculate Conception. He was appointed member of the Valladolid Academy of Fine Arts on 29th May 1932, replacing Luis González Frades. Belonging to a family of artists, his father achieved a great reputation and became a highly praised stage designer. He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Valladolid, later renamed the Academy of Arts and Crafts. It was at this time that he aroused the interest and admiration of his teachers. He became a copyist at the Valladolid museum, where he reproduced several of the works and was able to contemplate the painting by Félix Resurrección Hidalgo "Christian Virgins Exposed to the Populace". Gerbolés subsequently moved to Madrid to study ornamentation and was awarded the special prize at the Central School of Arts and Industries. In Madrid he trained under the guidance of the Bilbao artist Roberto Laplaza (Bilbao, 1842-Madrid, 1930), although he later returned to his native Valladolid. There he began to work as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1926 he was appointed assistant professor of artistic drawing and decorative composition.
