Suffragette Interest: An important Women’s Social and Political Union Silver Medal for Valour, obverse engraved Hunger Strike, reverse engraved Elsie Wolff Van Sandau, with one clasp engraved March 4th 1912, in case of issue, interior of silk-lined cover with gold-blocked inscription: PRESENTED TO ELSIE WOLFF VAN SANDAU BY THE WOMEN’S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL UNION IN RECOGNITION OF GALLANT ACTION WHEREBY THROUGH ENDURANCE TO THE LAST EXTREMES OF HUNGER AND HARDSHIP A GREAT PRINCIPLE OF POLITICAL JUSTICE WAS VINDICATEDMiss Wolff Van Sandau, granddaughter of Dr E Schwabe, private chaplain to the late Duchess of Kent, was arrested after allegedly smashing a window in London’s Covent Garden during the March 4, 1912 campaign. She subsequently went on trial and began a hunger strike. She was also arrested on November 18, 1910 following the infamous ‘Black Friday’ riots, a demonstration by 300 women at Westminster led by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst
A Late 19th or Early 20th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, mounted with a leaf of Carrickmacross guipure lace. The design is relatively small scale, with three flower heads spaced at regular intervals, a top border of smaller flower heads and a profusion of shamrocks scattered elsewhere. Metal loop and silk tassel with intricate knot. Contained in a cream silk covered fan box, a label inside the lid for PARIS HOUSE DUBLIN, 58 Grafton St, Fan Manufacturers, Fancy Goods and Jewellery, Gold Medal and First Prize. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Previously sold at Christies, lot 124, no date on the label. Fan in good order. The box lid requires attention, the silk is worn in places and slightly stained. The shop label is clear and clean.

Thomas H Cooper Steward 1918', both cased.
