REMARKABLE ARCHIVE OF THE CAREER OF FLIGHT SERGEANT LESLIE JOSEPH OXFORD 560668 R.A.F. DOCUMENTING WITH MEDALS INCLUDING LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT - PHOTOGRAPHS AND PAPERWORK COVERING HIS WHOLE CAREER FROM 1926 TO 1955. This remarkable collection is being sold as one lot at the request of the family. Photographs and paperwork his entire career from 1926 to 1955. He was initially trained as a Rigger/Carpenter and later as an airframe fitter specialising in engine fitting also. Through this trade he served as both Ground and Air Crew on many important aircraft including the R101 Airship, Dakota, Bristols, Hawker, Gypsy Moth, and Vickers. As a fitter he was involved in the recovery and investigation of many crashed and downed aircraft including the K.L.M. Airline crash in Iraq in 1934 and recovery of all the bodies. Before this he recorded Amy & Jim Mollison in the K.L.M. aircraft during the England to Australia Air Race 1935. All of these important events and aircraft he photographed and recorded. Fl Sgt Oxford was first posted to Grantham where he Boxed and played Hockey for his squadron in No.3 F/T school. Then he was posted to Cardington where he was involved with the R100 & R101 Airships of which there are numerous original photographs showing the R101 in flight in Cardington, the ‘Tail of the R100 taken from carriage whilst crossing the Atlantic’, The R101 moored in Ottawa, The State Room, Galleys and Crews Mess on the R101. And, most poignantly, a photograph taken of the R101 being pulled out of its shed before what was to be her ill-fated final flight. This final flight ended in disaster at Beauvais where all but 7 of the 55 passengers and crew were killed. He also served on HMS Furious, the Torpedo Carrier and HMS Glorious as, possibly, aircraft recognition. He worked on Sunderland Flying Boats in 1939 at 201 Sq. Lerwick. From there he went to RAF Hullavington with No.9 F/T School for Hurricane Fighters, also Leicester, Andover, Egypt, Colerne and once again Iraq. This archive also includes Fl Sgt Oxford’s Cigarette Cases, one with enamel R.A.F. wings, the other engraved by hand with ’55 Squadron emblems and a scene from Iraq, His service medals including the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, Discharge Documents, Service Cards, Foreign Currency notes, Postcards, RAF Meteor Newspaper, Parachuting photos & prints, Troopship Dinner Menus, a ‘Gentleman’s Pass’ to the Baghdad Races, A request to attend Baghdad Court after witnessing a knife attack. (Fl Sgt Oxford and colleagues were attacked by a mob whilst leaving this court case). Plus many other fascinating items and ephemera collected during almost 30 yrs of distinguished service. Then followed a long trek up the peninsula of Italy. It was easy at first, but at Termoli the main battle for Italy was joined, after this in Oct 1943, it was just one long, hard slogging match, now in the mud and dust. Battles were fought on the Trigno and Sangro rivers that Autumn and for two months the division stood guard in the high Appenines and along the Upper Sangro. Then followed Cassino and its bitter fighting. In mid-May 1944 the static front was broken and the advance took the division through Rome to the shores of Lake Trasimeno, scene of the hardest fighting since Cassino`.

1914 star with clasp (9696 Pte R Rennie 1/Gord Highrs) GVF, clasp gummed to modern ribbon. Together with a Princess Mary gift tin 1914 (no contents) GC and 11 sundry other items. Note: Robert Rennie, Gordon Highlanders. Regimental Museum letter states 1st Bttn fought at Mons on 23rd August 1914 and also on 26th August 1914 at Le Cateau where about two thirds of the battalion were taken prisoner due to not receiving an order to retreat and then being surrounded by the German Army. However, although Robert Rennie’s name is on a list of Gordon Highlanders stated to be missing and published towards the end of October 1914, his medal card states that he subsequently transferred to the Royal Enginineers and was also awarded the DCM. The London Gazette 4.6.1917 and 9.7.17states “A/2nd/Cpl R. Rennie, RE. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The satisfactory working of communications during operations was very largely due to his fine work under shell fire”

An interesting presentation silver pocket watch relating to Old Colwyn, N Wales, engraved inside the lid “Presented to Mr Robert Ward, by Public Subscription, in recognition of bravery displayed in saving life at Old Colwyn, Nov 1912”, HM B’ham 1912, 2 winding keys; with a photostat extract from “The Times” Mar 19th 1913 “The King has been graciously pleased to award the Edward Medal of the Second Class to .... Robert Ward and James Jones..... (who) at great risk to themselves, worked for 3¼ hours to rescue two excavators named John Lloyd and Morris Edwards, who were buried by a fall of earth in a sewer trench at Old Colwyn on November 21, 1912. Lloyd was dead when they reached him, but they saved the life of Edwards”. GWO & basically GC (some wear and dents)
