Basire, circa 1851, lithograph on wove after E.E. Barnard, depicting the 2-2-2 locomotive 'Little England' built by the Hatcham Iron Works, upper right and left corners torn with loss and repaired, some repaired tears to verso of whole print, lined to verso with archival tissue, 425 x 665 mm, mountedQty: (1)NOTESThe Hatcham Iron Works was founded by George England (1811-78) of Newcastle upon Tyne, with records showing that he first paid rates on the property in July 1840, but it was not until the 1846 edition of the Post Office Directories that the firm was listed as ‘England, George & Co. Engineers and patent screw jack manufacturers. During the Great Exhibition of 1851 he had two items on display. Exhibit No 484 was a Patent Traversing Screw Jack ‘for raising and moving heavy bodies, both vertically and laterally’. Exhibit No 509 was one of George’s standard 2-2-2 tank locomotives, also named Little England, ‘intended to reduce locomotive expenses in proportion to the amount of traffic. It has been proved that this engine is capable of working express trains of six first class carriages at a speed of 60 miles per hour consuming only 8lbs of coke per mile’. A blue flag bearing the legend ‘Speed, Safety and Economy’ in gilt letters was suspended over the engine. The jury were impressed, and awarded a Gold Medal, praising the engine’s ‘ingenious arrangement and good workmanship’. The firm also exhibited in Paris in 1855 and at the second International Exhibition in London in 1862. During the 1860's George England's firm built a number of locomotives for the famous Festiniog Railway.

Barbara Firth (1928-2013), Printed proofs for Jack, written by David Lloyd illustrated by Barbara Firth, 14 printed pages 25 x 34.5 cms, Barbara Firth (1928-2013) was a children’s book illustrator specialising in animal paintings She was born in Cheshire and enjoyed drawing as a child but had no formal art education. When she was three, she began drawing plants and animals, and when she was eleven years old, her family moved to the country, enabling her to spend even more time sketching the flora and fauna around her. Firth delighted in her lack of training: and stated I have been very lucky, as my career in drawing is also my favourite hobby. She qualified in pattern cutting at the London College of Fashion and worked for 15 years for Vogue as production director on books on crochet, knitting and dressmaking. She moved to Marshall Cavendish, and there met Amelia Edwards who commissioned her to illustrate some non-fiction work. Her long term partnership was with publishers Walker Books She collaborated regularly with Martin Waddell on his Little Bear books. She won the 1988 Kate Greenaway Medal, awarded by the Library Association for distinguished illustration in a book for children, for her work on Martin Waddell's Can't You Sleep Little Bear, which has been called as perfect a picture-book as anyone could hope to makeFirth lived much of her life in Harrow, with her sister Betty and a household full of pets including Waldo the tortoise. She was survived by her sister Betty and the centenarian WaldoProvenance; This Studio collection was acquired from her estate by the vendor after the Artist’s death, and comprises original art-work from various books that she illustrated. Many of the works are annotated with studio instructions and none are signed. A GEORGIAN PRESENTATION SWORD OF ROYAL MARINES INTEREST, 80.5cm blade decorated with foliate sprays, stands of arms, crowned GR cypher and crowned Royal arms, copper gilt stirrup hilt with lion's mask langets, star burst pommel, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its copper gilt mounted leather scabbard, the upper mount engraved PHOENIX Captured LA DIDON Aug 10th 1805 from Genl. Piden to Lt Pleydell ROYAL MARINES for his Gallantry. The Phoenix had served in the East Indies in the 1790's capturing the French ship Resolue which was believed to be carrying supplies to Tipu Sultan and went on to be involved in further engagements resulting in the capture of many many French Privateers. On the 10th of August 1805 HMS Phoenix engaged and captured the French frigate La Didon off the coast of Corruna. The capture of La Didon initiated the creation of the Phoenix engagement bar for the Naval General Service medal. Phoenix went on to capture French despatches just before Trafalgar and pursued French ships that had fled Trafalgar, although she never fought at Trafalgar herself. Scabbard leather replaced.

KNIGHT'S CROSS WITH OAK LEAVES AND SWORDS, a Juncker jeweller's copy, the cross stamped 800 L12, and the oak leaves 800 21, cased, the inside of the lid with enamelled Mickey Mouse badge. By descent the property of Heinz Bar who was credited with in excess of 220 victories, 16 of which were in the jet powered ME262. He was the highest scoring NCO during the Battle of Britain. Mickey Mouse was Heinz Bar's mascot - amongst the family collection are numerous examples of his Mickey Mouse badges. Together with association sashes and later copy medal.

A fine Blackburn Rovers 1928 F.A. Cup Final souvenir photograph album originally the property of club Vice-Chairman J. Eddleston Esq.,gilt stamped cover, containing an example of a player's shirt badge, a passage of printed text and 33 high quality photographs including team-group, club directors, the trophy, aerial view of Wembley, laying of a club wreath at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, community singing, the singing of Abide With Me, crowd scenes, players taking to the field, presentation of players to H.M. The King, captains shaking hands at the centre spot, panoramic views of the match in progress, close-up of the 1st minute goal, 2nd goal as seen from the stand and another from a nearer view, Harry Healless receiving the Cup and medal from the King and other views of the ceremony, parading the cup, scene in the dressing room, and concluding with the triumphant return to Blackburn.  Condition is fair with wear to the exterior of the album, and the interior, there is water damage evident throughout the pages, the spine is damaged with losses.

Scarce and historically important football programme relating to the first-ever tour by an English team to pre-Revolutionary Russia in 1911, issued for the match between English Wanderers and a combined Moscow & St Petersburg British Clubs XI, single-sheet of paper, printed in Cyrillic, priced, and with the Russian Julian Calendar date of 20th August, being the 2nd September in the Gregorian Calendar, pencil translations to English language Football in Russia at this time mainly involved teams representing British-owned textile mills. The best known among these was the Charnock family - Clem, James and Harry - whose Vicoul Morozov Mill was situated to the east of Moscow. They created their own team called the Morozovtsi which in the pre WWI period was arguably the best team in Russia and the Charnock family's involvement led directly to Russia joining FIFA in 1912 and entering the Stockholm Olympics of the same year. The present match saw a team comprised of British players living & working in St Petersburg (then the Tsarist capital) and Moscow, who had formed clubs there, play the famous amateur team English Wanderers. The game attracted a gate of 4,500 spectators in St Petersburg and ended as a 14-0 win for the Wanderers. Eight of the English Wanderers starting XI were capped England Amateur Internationals: Ron Brebner Darlington-born goalkeeper and gold medal winner at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games. Played for a variety of clubs including Chelsea. Tragically died in 1914 having sustained a head injury playing for Leicester Fosse. James Raine Made Football League appearances for Newcastle United, Sunderland, Sheffield United & Glossop. Served as a Major in the Durham Light Infantry during the First World War. Arthur Berry Famous England amateur who won 24 caps and two gold medals for Great Britain at the London 1908 and Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games. A double Oxford Blue who made appearances for Liverpool, Fulham, Everton, Wrexham, Northern Nomads and Oxford City. He later Served as Chairman and Director of Liverpool FC. Frederick Chapman Co-founder of English Wanderers and a gold medal winner at the London 1908 Olympic Games. He made Football League appearances for Nottingham Forest. Gordon Hoare Another team member who was a Great Britain Olympic champion, winning gold at Stockholm in 1912. Played Football League matches for Woolwich Arsenal, Glossop and Fulham. Syd Owen Hat-trick scoring England Amateur international forward whose main club was Leicester Fosse. Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme he has various spells at Stoke as well. J E Olley Twice an F.A. Amateur Cup winner with Clapton FC. R W W Cuthbert Played three times as an England Amateur in the same year as the Wanderers 1911 Russian Tour, including twice on the continental tour v Germany and Netherlands. The other English Wanderers players for this game were Bardsley, Gaskell and G Olley, presumably a family relation of J E Olley.

Barry was born in Torpoint, Cornwall on 6th September 1885 & at 19 years was studying at the University of St Andrews when he won the Amateur Championship in 1905 at Prestwick, defeating Osmund Scott. At 18 years he won the R & A Gold medal & in 1905 he capped a memorable year by winning the King William IV medal of the R & A. He studied at Cambridge University playing against Oxford in 1906 & 1907. In 1914 he studied at Oxford, playing against his former university Cambridge. He represented England against Scotland in the annual amateur international in 1906 & 1907. His army career gained him the M.C during the great War and the D.S.O in 1919. In 1935 he was promoted to Lt. Col and in 1938 to Colonel. Brigadier Barry resided at The Wynd in St Andrews, suffering from bad health and force to stand down his army position and died aged 56 years in 1942.

The property of Falmouth Rugby Football Club and originally owned by their England international fullback John Jackett: an historic New Zealand 'Original All Blacks' shirt worn in the Test Match v England played at Crystal Palace 2nd December 1905,neck label inscribed WALLACE & GIBSON, THE KASH, NEXT EVENING POST, WELLINGTON, silver fern badge, canvas overlay to the shoulders and upper chest and back, leather neck line extending down the lacing-v, black colour very good, original lacing, tear & period repair to middle of back from neck line and also small period repaired tear across right collar bone, right sleeve un-seamed along most of length, various hole punctures to bodyThe Original All Blacks, also simply known as "The Originals" were the first New Zealand national rugby union team to tour outside Australasia. They toured the British Isles, France and the United States of America during 1905-1906. Their opening game was against Devon on 16 September 1905 whom they defeated 55-4. Such was the surprise that some newspapers in Britain printed that Devon had scored 55 points and not the All Blacks.Edward “John” Jackett of Falmouth RFC was selected to make his England Test Match debut in the Test Match v New Zealand played at Crystal Palace 2nd December 1905. New Zealand won the match 15-0. Winger Duncan McGregor scored four tries, with Fred Newton scoring the other. Jackett swapped his shirt with one of the Original All Blacks, whose identity is unknown. The shirt remained in the Jackett family until the 1970s, at which time it was presented to Falmouth RFC.Jackett, who was born in Falmouth 4th July 1878, played in a total of 13 matches for England, his last appearance being in the 1909 Scotland match at Richmond. He also played for Cornwall who were essentially the Great Britain rugby team that competed at the London 1908 Olympic Games, being the reigning county champions. He was awarded a silver medal together with his elder brother Richard Jackett following the 32-3 defeat to Australia. John Jackett also toured with the 1908 British Isles team to New Zealand and Australia. In 1911 Jackett switched codes and played fullback for Dewsbury winning a Challenge Cup winner’s medal in 1912 following the 8-5 defeat of Oldham at Headingley.The New Zealand touring team went on to defeat every English side that they faced, including a 16-3 victory over English county champions Durham. As well as England they defeated the national teams of Scotland & Ireland and suffered their only loss of the 35-match tour when defeated 3-0 defeat by Wales at Cardiff Arms Park.The 1905 All Blacks tour of Britain went on to achieve legendary status within the rugby world and New Zealand in particular. They scored 976 points and conceded only 59, and thus set the standard for all subsequent All Black sides. The tour also saw the first use of the All Blacks nickname and established New Zealand's reputation as a world class rugby nation as well as the famous black shirt becoming an international sporting icon.

The Exposition Universelle of 1889 was a world's fair held in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille. It attracted more than 32 million visitors and the Eiffel Tower was one of many famous structures created especially for the occasion.

MENDELSON LONG JUMP 21FT, diameter 7cm., in original Mappin & Webb fitted box (2) Both these events were held at the original Stamford Bridge stadium. The Varsity medal won here was for a distance 1.5 ft. farther than the gold medal winner jumped at the first Athens Olympic Games in 1896. New Zealander Wallingford Mendelson (1872-1902) was an all-round sportsman, partaking in cricket, rugby and athletics. He played one first-class cricket match for his native Canterbury in season 1893-94 and in 1893 was New Zealand's long jump champion. He then studied law at Jesus College, Cambridge, winning Blues in rugby and athletics between 1894 and 1896. His greatest moment came in the varsity long jump when beating Oxford's champion and joint world record holder C.B.Fry.

Muguerza, Francisco G. Sada Muguerza, Alberto Sada Muguerza, Isaac Garza Garza (brother in-law of Francisco and Alberto, married to their sister Consuelo Sada Muguerza), Joseph M. Schnaider, with capital of 150,000 pesos, starting with the Carta Blanca brand. Cuauhtémoc brewery produced its first beer barrel in 1893 and won first prize in the Chicago World Fair, and then at the 1900 Paris World Fair. However, this medal is much smaller than the 1900 issues and is deemed to be a gold commemorative replica of their original prize, minted in Mexico.

Johnny Weissmuller autographed photographic display, comprising an ink signature mounted with a 8 x 6 in. movie studio photograph of Weissmuller in his famous role as Tarzan, under glass in clip frame, 40 x 30 cm.Johnny (Janos) Weissmuller (Austro-Hungarian/American, 1904 - 1984) an American competition swimmer and actor. Weissmuller was one of the world's fastest swimmers in the 1920's, having won five Olympic gold medals for swimming representing the US in the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics in the 100 metres and 400 metres freestyle competitions and as a member of the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay winning team, also winning a bronze medal with the water polo team. In the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam he won two further gold medals in the 100 meter freestyle and as part of the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay team. Weissmuller having signed with Bradley, Voorhees & Day (BVD) in 1929, travelling America doing swim shows, promoting the BVD brand of swimwear through modelling, signing autographs and doing radio shows. He made his first motion picture appearance in Glorifying the American Girl as Adonis, then in several Crystal Champions movies with other Olympic champions from the period. His acting career took off when he signed a seven year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and played the role of Tarzan in Tarzan the Ape Man in 1932 movie by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. He starred in six Tarzan movies for MGM with actress Maureen O'Sullivan. In 1942 he moved to Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) and starred in six further Tarzan movies with Johnny Sheffield. Starring in a total of twelve Tarzan movies he established himself as what many movie historians consider the definitive Tarzan.

She retired from competitive swimming after her Olympic success but, under her married name of Lucy Heaton, continued to support swimming events for the rest of her life, serving as a competitors' steward at the age of 72.
