His father was an art collector and his circle of artistic frineds included Monet, Renoir, Dufy, and Pissarro. Maze learned the fundamentals of painting from Pissarro and, as a young boy, sketched on the beach with Dufy.During the First World War, Maze served in the army and met Sir WInston Churchill in the trenches. Their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship. For his bravery in the front line, Maze was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and Military Medal by the British and the Croix de Guerre and Legion D'honneur by the French.After World War 1, Maze immersed himself in the Parisian art scene and became friends with Derain, de Segonzac, Bonnard and, in particular, Vuillard.Maze became one of Churchill's artistic mentors, encouraging him to develop his drawing and painting techniques. Maze's work is held in many galleries, including Tate, and in private collections worldwide.

ALFIED MARTIN WAS BORN AT FINAGHY, BELFAST IN 1920. IN 1938, LIKE MANY YOUNG MEN AT THAT TIME, HE WAS HIT BY A FEELING OF PATRIOTISM. FORBIDDEN BY HIS MOTHER FROM JOINING THE ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE - IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS! - IN JANUARY 1939 HE INSTEAD JOINED THE ANTRIM FORTRESS COMPANY, RPYAL ENGINEERS. THIS WAS A TERRITORIAL ARMY COMPANY TRAINING ONE EVENING A WEEK IN CENTRAL BELFAST. CALLED UP IN AUGUST 1939 HE SERVED WITH THE ENGINEERS AT KILROOT, HELENS BAY AND MAGILLIGAN BEFORE JOINING THE ROYAL AIR FORCE IN MAY 1941. IT WAS WHILE SERVING WITH NO 102 SQUADRON RAF, AT POCKLINGTON, YORKSHIRE, AS AN OBSERVER ON HALIFAX BOMBER HR663, THAT HIS AIRCRAFT WAS SHOT DOWN OVER THE FRENCH-BELGIAN BORDER. THE BOOK WITH THIS LOT TELLS OF HIS REMARKABLE TALE OF ESCAPE FROM GERMAN-OCCUPIED FRANCE AND THOSE WHO HELPED HIM.

ENLISTED AND RETURNED TO EUROPE TO FIGHT IN FRANCE. PRIVATE CLARKE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON THE 6TH JUNE 1916 AGED 28 IN THE BUILD UP TO THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. HE IS BURIED IN THE BREWERY ORCHARD CEMETARY, BOIS-GRENIER FRANCE. WITH THE TRIO IS HIS DEATH PENNY & ORIGINAL SCROLL POSTED FROM FRANCE STATING WHERE HIS NAME HAS BEEN CARVED IN MEMEORIAL.
