A rare RAF WWII medal and ephemeral group including a cased set of five medals comprising Distinguished Flying Cross, 1939-45 Star, The Air Crew Europe Star (with France and Germany bar), War Medal & Defense Medal, with inscriptions to F/O L.C. Harris 179040 RAF V.R.10 SQN. Complete with the recipients framed promotion certificate to Pilot Officer rank in 1944, RAF pilots flying log book to LC Harris, Canadian Air Force Flying Log Book for aircrew other than pilot to LC Harris, pilots and engineers notes booklet, RAF service and release book to LC Harris, a letter of recommendation for receipt of the DFC, photographs of the recipient and other ephemera, buttons and badges
A cased medal possibly depicting Britannia in high relief within a garden setting and marked "Territorial Army Rifle Assoc" and the reverse inscribed "1st City Lieut Cup, 56th Div 1928" English hallmarks, London 1927, a silver gilt and enamel fob pendant depicting Britannia, the Union flag and "Marksman" enamelled in colours, Birmingham hallmarks 1913, another Marksman fob/pendant with overlapping rifle decoration, all cased.
NIXON RICHARD: (1913-1994) American President 1969-74. A good T.L.S., Richard Nixon, as President, one page, slim 4to, Washington, 12th April 1973, to Mrs. Charles Blair [Maureen O'Hara], on the printed stationery of The White House. Nixon states that he and his wife were delighted to be among the guests at a dinner in honour of John Ford and remarks 'In honoring a great director, we were also saluting the talented men and women in the motion picture industry who have contributed so much to the enrichment of our lives.' The President further comments 'Those who planned the entertainment for this occasion knew that no one can sing an Irish song better than one who can claim Dublin as her birthplace, and we want you to know how much we enjoyed your beautiful rendition of the Irish ballads which you sang in tribute to John Ford.' Accompanied by the original envelope. A letter of interesting content and association. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases, VG John Ford (1894-1973) Irish-American Film Director, Academy Award winner. On the date referred to by Nixon in his letter, 31st March 1973, John Ford became the first recipient of the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award. At the same ceremony Nixon also presented Ford with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Maureen O'Hara (1920- ) Irish Actress & Singer, famous for her collaborations with John Ford and John Wayne, including The Quiet Man (1952). Her third husband was Charles Blair (1909-1978) American Test Pilot and Airline owner, a pioneer of transatlantic aviation.
RATTIGAN TERENCE: (1911-1977) English Dramatist. Two A.Ls.S. and a T.L.S., Terry, four pages (total), London, Paris & Bermuda, 24th March n.y., 1st January 1958 & 9th October 1970, all to Vivian Ellis. Rattigan refers to his work, including The Winslow Boy, and also mentions that he has written to [Denis] Healey to tell him 'All right. Take all our savings: (take Mr [Harold] Wilson's too) But don't do it with jeers! Don't make us all feel guilty for having made it, and for having saved it. In short, strike us a medal. (Maybe I'll never come back to England)', and in another letter thanks Ellis for a gift, 'far too handsome and generous and putting my tiny little Coq (must be careful about spelling that) to shame.' Together with a signed and inscribed 8vo paperback edition of French Without Tears published by Samuel French, London, 1937, being French's Acting Edition No. 2137, signed by Rattigan to the title page, 'Vivian, with love, Terry' and dated August 1945 in his hand.
