Battle of Trafalgar Interest. The Companion Military Order of the Bath awarded to Captain Edward Rotheram, HMS Royal Sovereign Captain of HMS Royal Sovereign in the Battle of Trafalgar, including:- Facsimile of autograph letter of Lord Nelson to the R.H. The Duke of Kent" dated: Victory 22 July 1805.- A memoir relating to the late Capt. E Rotheram describing his actions at Trafalgar among other records of service- A letter to Capt. Rotheram's granddaughter regarding his tombstone/inscriptions etc.- Letter dated 19 September 1815 containing the ribbon and badge of a Companion of the most Honourable Military Order of the Bath awarded to Capt. A WWII Military MBE group of six to Major Desmond John Dudley TorrensCONDITION: Relatively recently presented in display case therefore we have not been able to access the five medals, the Territorial medal is held in its original case, comes with Notice for Gallantry in Action dated 1st Oct 42 and signed by General Alexander, leather case for MBE and five miniatures, together with original note regarding mention in Dispatches, details of service where personal number is 115777 and details of the award of the MBE for Service in a field dressing station and work in a surgical centre.
The Legion of Honour is the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and retained by all later French governments and régimes. The order's motto is Honneur et Patrie ("Honour and Fatherland"), and its seat is the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur next to the Musée d'Orsay, on the left bank of the Seine in Paris. The order is divided into five degrees of increasing distinction: Chevalier (Knight), Officier (Officer), Commandeur (Commander), Grand officier (Grand Officer), and Grand-croix (Grand Cross). To Gunner RHH Buck, British War Medal and Bilingual Victory Medal. BWM named to SAHA(SA Heavy Artillery), and Victory Medal to the SAMCC (South African Motor Cycle Corps). Rare to find South Africabn WW1 medals named to different units. South African Motor Cyclist Corps was sent in 1916 to East Africa with 400 B.S.A. motorcycles. Although a well-known publicity photograph, usually incorrectly labelled as one of the South African Motor Cycle Corps, shows a smiling soldier with a Model H, all of the known photos from East Africa show the use of Model Ks without the enclosed chain drive. The Model K had a cylinder capacity of 557cc, was rated at 4½ horse power and had a primary chain and belt final drive. The magneto was mounted in front of the engine in a position rather vulnerable to wet conditions, although the front mudguard did have a protective lower flap. The S.A.M.C.C. machines had leather gun buckets mounted on the forks for carrying rifles, Lewis guns or signalling equipment

The Transvaal sent 535 men of the Imperial Light Horse (ILH), Johannesburg Mounted Rifles (JMR), South African Light Horse (SALH) and the Northern, Eastern and Western Mounted Rifles, these were collectively called the Transvaal Mounted Rifles under the command of Lt Colonel W F Barker

A RARE JAPANESE LACQUER PILLAR HANGING BY KOMA YASUTADA, HASHIRA-KAKE EDO PERIOD, LATE 18TH CENTURY The tall rectangular panel decorated in gold, silver and red on a black roiro ground, depicting a beauty dressed in an ornate Western dress decorated with pearls and ribbons, a medal shaped as a Maltese cross in gold and silver tied at her waist, leaning over and smiling gently, with European-style cross-hatching executed in harigaki, a circular hanging hole above and signed Koma Yasutada saku on the edge of the panel, together with a fitted tomobako box and cover, 158cm x 11.4cm. (2) Provenance: formerly the collection of Mike and Hiroko Dean. Illustrated in M & H Dean, Nihon no Shikki, Japanese lacquer - an Exposition, no.109; also Barry Davies Oriental Art, Japanese lacquer, Nambokucho to Zeshin, The Collection of Mike and Hiroko Dean, pp.67-68, no. 67. Hashira-kake are tall panels which were used to decorate hashira, indoor pillars. Mike Dean (d.2013) was a recognised artist who, throughout his career, exhibited paintings in St Yves and across the UK. Together with his wife Hiroko, they built an important Japanese collection consisting of metalwork and lacquer wares. Mike opened Nihon Token (the Japanese sword) in Museum Street near the British Museum and worked for many years on a book dedicated to their lacquer pieces assembled over forty years. The book was published with Kyoto Shoin Publishers in the early 1980s and was entitled 'Japanese lacquer - an exhibition'. Mike and Hiroko were also close friends of Bernard Leach (1887-1979) and Shoji Hamada (1894-1978) and they loaned many of their own Leach and Hamada pieces to museums in Japan.
