A World War One group of four Medals, named 43644, Gnr/Sjt/Cpl. John Milligan, Royal Garrison Artillery comprising: British War Medal and Victory Medal (Sgt), 1914-15 Star (Gnr) and Military Medal (Cpl) London Gazette mentions M.M on 6/1/17, accompanied by transmission envelope addressed to Mrs.E.Milligan, copies of details from a family scrapbook including a mention regarding his M.M from his Commanding Officer, ` given for good example and service in the field, and devotion to duty. The special incident which clinched the matter was the laying of a wire under very difficult circumstances, owing to the state of the ground, (the mud being up to the knees) under intermittent shell-fire in the open, the trenches being blown in, and bringing back his party safely, some members of which were entirely exhausted.` Also a Special Constabulary Long Service Medal in case of issue awarded to James H Spencer (relative of the Milligan family)
A World War One Military Cross GVR, unnamed and in original case of issue and a Military Medal GVR, named for 2018 Pte/2nd Liut. Francis Sydney Milligan, 2/1st West Lancashire Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. M.M awarded 1916 and London Gazette citation for the M.C reads `For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Though wounded early in the attack, he took command of his company, and gallantry led them against the enemy`s position, which he captured. He refused to leave his company, and held his position successfully for two days. His great courage and coolness set a magnificent example to all ranks`, accompanied by contemporary paperwork and copies of newspaper articles
