H. studierte 1906-15 an der Kopenhagener Akademie und war Schüler von G. Vermehren, J. Rohde und H. Giersing. Er unternahm Studienreisen nach Italien, Deutschland, die Niederlande und Belgien. 1929 kehrte er auf seine Heimatinsel Bornholm zurück und entwickelte sich zu einem der führenden avantgardistischen Landschaftsmaler der dänischen Kunst des 20. In 1929 he returned to his home island Bornholm and developed into one of the leading avantgardist Danish painters of the 20th cent. A SILVER CASED FOUNTAIN PEN with 14ct gold nib, in presentation box, together with a cased medal, 'The Thirty Club of London', in Spink & Son Ltd London case, together with a brass lighter fashioned as an Eley shotgun cartridge, and various bank notes Condition report – nib engraved “Champion warranted 14ct”, the silver barrel engraved “N.H. Gardner”, named “Sheffield” on the pocket clip, there is a hole on the cover side, not sure from what. The “Bakelite” band is chipped and worn, needs a clean.
World War Two (WW2) campaign medal - Herbert C Downs, a British Empire Medal (Civil Division) awarded in respect of Wartime Service to a seafarer from Barbados who appears to have later settled in Grimsby, published London Gazette 9th January 1946. An extract from Grimsby Evening Telegraph, 11/01/1946 states a coloured man, a native of Barbados, Mr H C Downs, aged 61 of 84 Nelson St, Grimsby, has given continuous service during the war as trimmer, deck-hand or third hand. He has been continuously employed by Sir Thomas Robinson & Son Ltd for 25 years and sailed for them during the whole war of 1914-1918. He was in the 'Iranian' and 'Median' when they were attacked by enemy aircraft. Ex Glendinning, Sept 22 1993 - included in the lot is an extract from Glendinnings Catalogue of 22 September 1993 wherein the medal was listed as lot 21.
World War Two (WW2) campaign medals - 21076 Sepoy Sultan Mahmud, Machine Gun Battn,11 Sikh Regt Burma, British Military Medal for Bravery in the Field, 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, War medal and War Medal with black & grey ribbon, on display board, Citation for Gallantry at Nevis on the Mawchi road on 1st July 1945. His machine-gun position was subjected to heavy macine-gun fire followed by ferocious Japanese bayonet charge which killed the No 1 of his gun crew leaving him alone to face the attack. He kept his gun in action driving off two successive Japanese attacks. Whilst sections of infantry struggled unsuccessfully to come to his aid, he single-handedly drove off a third Japanese bayonet attack. He saved the gun and held the feature, which was a position of vital importance.
