Charles Arthur Wheeler (New Zealand, 1880-1977) Gums Trees in the Midday Heat signed lower left "C Wheeler" oil on board 30 x 39cm Charles Arthur Wheeler was born on 4 January 1880 at Dunedin, New Zealand. The family moved to Australia in 1891. Apprenticed in 1895 to C. Troedel & Co. as a lithographic artist, Charles began part-time study next year at the Working Men's College; in 1898 he took drawing classes at night in the National Gallery schools under Frederick McCubbin and in 1905 joined the painting class under L. Bernard Hall. Some five years later Wheeler held his first one-man show. In 1910 the National Art Gallery of New South Wales purchased his painting, 'The Portfolio', and the National Gallery of Victoria acquired 'The Poem'. Wheeler exhibited with the Victorian Artists' Society in 1908-10 and with the Australian Art Association in the 1920s and 1930s. In April 1912 he travelled to London, visiting Paris and the Prado in Madrid to see the work of Velazquez. In the following year he exhibited 'Le Printemps' at the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais, Paris, and in 1914 went to the Netherlands. Returning to England before the outbreak of World War I, he enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (1916) for his actions at Vimy Ridge, but refused a commission and remained a sergeant. Demobilized in February 1919, Wheeler took a studio at Chelsea and exhibited 'Autumn Afternoon' and 'Golden Hours' at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Back in Melbourne, he held an exhibition at the Athenaeum Gallery in March 1920.
Albert Aublet (French, 1851-1938) Portrait of Mademoiselle Rickert signed upper right "A Mlle Rickert, hommage amical, Albert Aublet, 1895" charcoal on buff paper 40 x 28cm Albert Aublet was the only protégé and pupil of Claude Monet. Aublet was born in January 1851 and completed his artistic training under the history and genre painter Claude Jacquand (1804-1878) between 1870 and 1874. Well-known for his lovely portraits, he bridged the gap between Impressionism and traditional realism. He was also a sculptor, exhibiting busts at La Nationale and Les Artistes Francaises between 1910 and 1936. He exhibited paintings also regularly at these two institutions, from 1890 to 1914 at the former, and 1920 to 1937 at the latter. He was awarded a Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition in 1889 and the Legion of Honour in1890. Amsterdam, London and Madrid also bestowed Gold medals on him and he received Silver Medals from Munich and Nice.
Joseph Alfred Terry, RBA (British, 1872-1939) Harvesters Returning Home at the End of the Day signed lower right "Joseph A Terry, 1906" oil on canvas 28 x 34cm Joseph Terry was a member of the famous York family of chocolatiers, who were Quakers and philanthropists. He began his studies in art at the York School of Art and in the early 1890s travelled to study at the Academies Julian and Colorossi in Paris where he won the Colorossi Silver Medal in 1895, the year after Peploe won it. On his return to England he settled at The Firs in Sleights, becoming a member of the Staithes Art Club in 1906. Joseph Terry worked equally well in both watercolours and oils and could turn his hand to any subject. His work demonstrates a great tactile pleasure in the application of paint and tends to be very strong and vibrant. In total contrast to this, he also painted some charming and romantic Italianate scenes in predominately pastel colours, similar to the watercolours painted at times by Frank Wasley which he usually entitled 'Idylls'. His studio sale was held in 1986 when Christies South Kensington sold 367 lots of his watercolours and oils. Most of his works which appear on the market are from this sale and bear a stamp giving their provenance.
