RNVR; M2 148014 Pte A C Howard A.S.C; 3-8959 Pte G E Charter Suff R), VF (last NVF with no suspender); Victory medals (2: 93556 Gnr W O Pittkin RA; P-567 L Cpl A F Dench MMP), GVF and NVF and a Lusitania commemorative medal, VF, no box. Note: George Ernest Charter Pte Suffolk Regt died 28.04.1917 and commemorated at the Arras Memorial.
Three: 1914-15 star, BWM, Victory (CH 8842 W J Woodroffe R.M.L.I), GEF, in packet remains, with Memorial Plaque to William John Woodroffe. Also a Metropolitan Police Coronation Medal 1911 (P.C. W Woodroffe), GVF (not illustrated). Plate 2 Note: Born 2.09.1877, enlisted 29.1.1896. Served aboard HMS Aboukir. The Live Bait Squadron, as it was dubbed, comprised HMS Aboukir, Cressy and Hogue, three ships built in 1901-1902 which had been in reserve or used for training. At the beginning of the war they were recommissioned and had the task of patrolling the southern area of the North Sea between Britain and Holland. On 22nd September 1914, seven weeks into the war, the three vessels were torpedoed in rapid succession by U Boat U-9 resulting in British losses (including Woodroffe) totalling 1,459.
