A Gentleman’s Travelling Wooden Writing Box Attributed to Light Brigade Charger Captain, Later Major General William Mussenden 8th Hussars, rectangular wooden writing box with a later brass inset lift-up carrying handle inscribed around the mount: “Captain W.Mussenden 8th Hussars”, Interior with pull-out inner stationery compartment, provision for mirror inside lid (missing). Brass lock fitting and stamped “VR PATENT”. Measures 33 x 23 x 13cms. The box has been cleaned and restored, some damage to the exterior. Major General William Mussenden is mentioned in the reference work Honour the Light Brigade, “Mussenden (Coronet William) Coronet; 10th June 1853; embarked for the Crimea in the H T Echunga: 15th May 1854; rode in the Charge, 25th October 1854. Horse killed. Lieutenant 19th January 1855; Embarked at Cork in the H.T. Great Britain for India, 8th October 1857; Captain 31st January 1858; Major 21st March 1868; Lieutenant Colonel, 14th November 1874. Assumed command of the regiment. Colonel and on to half pay 14th November 1879; Major General 29th December 1889; Colonel of the Regiment 8th June 1895. Died 6th March 1910.” His medal group was listed in the Dixons Gazette September 1992.

Meines Wissens das einzige Exemplar dieser höchsten italienischen Marine - Tapferkeitsauszeichnung an einen britischen Seemann, das jemals auf einer Auktion angeboten wurde. Gold Medal of Valour "Al Valore DI MARINA" 1874. Gold. Without ribbon. In the beautiful original case with lid impressed in gold. On the obverse the Italian royal coat of arms and signed "FERRARIS". The reverse with award engraving: "A / GIACOMO H. ELLIOT / DELLA MARINA / MERCANTle INGLESE" sorounded by the inscription: "SOCCORSO A NAUFRAGHI / VENEZIA 1° SETTEMBRE 1874". Splendid example of the utmost rarity and excellent condition. To the best of my knowledge the only example to a British seaman of this highest Italian naval award for bravery ever offered at auction.
