Bagley, BDMR, HMS Impregnable), VF, mounted as worn. Together with the following archive material: MID certificate to Bandmaster (Second Class) Leonard C Bagley, HMS Exeter, dated 23 Feb 1940 and in respect of the Battle of the River Plate (slightly soiled); recipient’s Royal Marines Certificate of Service, (enlisted September 1921 aged 14, and showing service aboard HMS Barham 1925 to 1928 and HMS Exeter December 1936 to February 1940 and confirming MID 20.2.1940 and LS medal 1940); 3 Royal Marines Certificates of Qualification (Band Corporal 1929, Band Master 2nd Class 1934, Musical Instructor 1934); menus for the Plymouth Civic Luncheon and the Guildhall London Lucheon for the Officers and Men of HMS Ajax and Exeter (both February 1940). Also included approx 250 photo postcards covering life at sea, informal groups, drill, views, sports, etc and many other photos (some AF/mounted) and including officers and ships company HMS Exeter 1936-39, earthquake damage at Concepcion etc; news cuttings relating to Exeter, victory parades etc and Royal visit to USA. Finally, a photographic print of King George VI and the ambassador at the British Embassy Washington, greeting England’s war veterans (June 1939). On the right of this photo the RM band of HMS Exeter with Bandmaster Bagley, the photo autographed by the King "George R", with an accompanying letter from Buckingham Palace "I have laid before The King the photograph which you enclosed with your letter of 22nd October (1950). His Majesty was much touched that you should have written as you did and, as you will see, has been pleased to make an exception of his general rule in signing your photograph for you...." Plate 3. Note: HMS Ajax, Achilles and Exeter engaged the German pocket battleship Graf Spee on Wednesday 13th December 1939 in what was to become the first naval battle of WWII (the Battle of the River Plate). The Exeter was the first ship to be engaged and suffered much damage. Following the action Graf Spee made for the neutral port of Montevideo. A few days later her commanding officer took Graf Spee outside the 3 mile limit and scuttled her. Ajax and Exeter arrived back in Plymouth on 31st January and 15th February 1940 respectively. At the Guildhall Luncheon Churchill made a rousing speech referring to "the glorious tale of the action off the Plate..."
