Lot 178

Attributed to Henry Brocas Snr. (c1760 - 1837) “Watermill, thought to be the O’Sullivan Flax Mill at Blarney,” c. 1810, watercolour on paper, 66cms x 47cms (26” x 18 ½”). Dating from the early nineteenth century, this watercolour painting of a mill by a river can be confidently attributed to Henry Brocas the Elder. The location of the building (not given on the watercolour), has been identified by Alison Muir, researcher on the history of Irish mills, as likely the five-storey mill that once stood in the village of Blarney, beside the River Martin. Owned by James B. O’Sullivan, this flax mill flourished for several decades. However, today little or nothing remains of the buildings depicted by Brocas, as O’Sullivan’s mill was demolished to make way for the Blarney Woollen Mills. The watercolour is therefore an important document relating to Ireland’s industrial archaeology. The location is idyllic, and the artist clearly intended to represent how nature has been improved through the addition of these buildings and industrial works. Although best known for his portraits, mainly of actors, politicians and lawyers, Brocas also depicted landscapes in watercolour, using a rapid technique of representing leaves and trees that relates to the present work. In this painting, he depicts a range of industrial and domestic buildings, set in a woodland landscape beside a bridge. In the foreground, a party consisting of a man, woman and child, walk along a curving riverside path, viewing the mill and its surroundings. Rising five storeys, the mill is an impressive building, with the top of the waterwheel visible just behind the five arched bridge. It is protected by a high wall, extending along the riverbank. Brocas has enlivened the scene by adding in the figure of a man fishing by the bridge, and three men, also fishing, in a boat. Beside the mill are two bird houses, or dove cots, raised high on poles. Beyond the bridge is a three-storey house, seen from the rear. Another domestic house is visible on the left, a two-storey building with outbuildings attached. On the brow of the hill, behind the mill, is a ruin. At the time this watercolour was painted, there was an early eighteenth-century wing of Blarney Castle falling into ruin. Only a circular tower survives today, some distance from the castle. The windows on this eighteenth century wing correspond to Brocas’s view. On the extreme right in the watercolour is a series of low buildings. Including at least five artists, over two generations the Brocas' were influential in Dublin’s art world. Henry Brocas Snr was born in Dublin in 1762, the fifth son of Robert Brocas and his wife Bridget (neé Taylor) Largely self taught as an artist, in the 1790’s he lived in the Grafton Street area of Dublin, before settling around 1825 in Henry Street. In 1800 he was appointed to teach landscape and decorative painting at the Dublin Society’s Drawing Schools, a post which he kept until his death in 1837. Brocas set an example to students at the School by making sketching tours to beauty spots around Dublin, and sketching scenes from life, rather than working exclusively in the studio. His four sons were pupils at the Dublin Society and also became professional artists, giving the family a long association with the Schools. The family was also associated with the Society of Irish Artists, with the third son, William, serving as President. William was also a member of the RHA, elected in 1860. Brocas’s other three sons were James Henry Brocas, born c 1790, Samuel Frederick, born in 1792, and Henry Jnr, who was born six years later.  Samuel Frederick Brocas is best known for his views of Dublin, while James Henry Brocas was a landscape, portrait and equestrian painter: his landscapes and paintings of horses and cattle were shown at exhibitions in Dublin between 1801 and 1816. John Henry studied at the Dublin Society's Drawing Schools, winning awards in 1802 and the year following, as well as a medal for etching. He moved to Cork around 1834. The youngest son Henry Brocas Junior (1798-1873) succeeded his father at the Dublin Society’s Schools, where he taught for around two decades. A detailed account of the Brocas family is given in Patricia Butler, The Brocas Collection, (NLI, Dublin, 1997).

Daniel Maclise (1806-1870) Design for Cork Art Exhibition Medal,  1852, sepia ink on paper, Inscribed “Daniel Maclise  Design for Cork Art Exhibition Medal   1852” Depicting an allegorical figure of Hope reaching out to assist Hibernia, this sepia drawing by Daniel Maclise is a significant work of art by the most successful painter to have emerged from Ireland in the nineteenth century. It is also a record of a key event in Cork’s economic and social history. The inscription records that the drawing was submitted by Maclise as a design for a medal to commemorate the Cork Exhibition of 1852. Promoted by John Francis Maguire, the first “Irish Industrial Exhibition” was intended to compensate for the low representation of Irish goods at the Great Exhibition held in London the previous year, and also to boost the economy in a part of Ireland badly affected by the Great Famine. In his Dictionary of Irish Artists, (Vol II, p.562) Walter Strickland mentions two medals struck by William Woodhouse (1805-1878) commemorating the Cork Exhibition; both were designed by Maclise. The first was for the overall exhibition, while the second, for which this is the preparatory drawing, included figures of Hope and Hibernia, and was for the opening of the Fine Art section of the exhibition. Displayed in the Fine Art Hall, in the southern transept of the main exhibition building, were paintings and sculptures by Irish artists, including Stephen Catterson Smith, George Petrie, Frederick William Burton, Francis Danby, John Henry Foley and Michelangelo Hayes. The architect John Benson received a knighthood for designing the huge building that housed the Cork Exhibition. Originally sited near City Hall, this wooden structure was later dismantled and the Fine Art Hall was re-erected as the “Athenaeum” theatre, alongside the old Custom House. It served well for over a century as the Cork Opera House, but was destroyed by fire in the late 1950’s. Born in Cork in 1806, Daniel Maclise was a student at the School of Art established in that city while he was still a young teenager. He went on to study at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he was an award-winning student. His history paintings were often inspired by literary works, such as the plays of Shakespeare, and he produced many designs for engravings in works of literature, such as Tom Moore’s Irish Melodies, the poems of Alfred Tennyson, and woodcuts for the ‘Christmas books’ of Charles Dickens. Many of Maclise’s friendships centred on the periodical Fraser’s Magazine, for which he produced dozens of lithographed portraits of  leading writers and politicians. However, the high point of his career was reached in the mid-1840’s, when he was commissioned to paint murals for the Houses of Parliament. One of these works, The Marraige of Strongbow and Aoife (1854) is now in the National Gallery of Ireland, but the two largest works, The Meeting of Wellington and Blücher (1861) and The Death of Nelson (1865) are in the Royal Gallery in the House of  Lords. After the death of Prince Albert, Maclise discontinued his work in the Houses of Parliament. Although he strove for, and achieved, success, when Maclise was offered the presidency of the Royal Academy, he refused, and he refused also the offer of a knighthood.

In 1941, he qualified as a bomber pilot and was posted to 107 Squadron, flying Mark IV Bristol Blemheim's out of RAF Great Massingham, Norfolk. At the start of 1943 he transferred to de Havilland Mosquito with 105 Squadron, part of Air Vice-Marshal Don Bennett's No.8 Group RAF pathfinder Group. A modest man, with a distinguished flying career, Wolstenholme rarely spoke of his courage as a bomber pilot who flew 100 missions during the Second World War, for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944 and the following year a BAR to his DFC for continual bravery in raids in Germany.   After the war, he became a freelance journalist, working for BBC Radio. In 1948 his television career began, he covered the 1959 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final between Kilkenny and Waterford for BBC Television, an experience which moved him to describe hurling as his second-favourite sport after his first love, football. At the conclusion of the 1966 World Cup final Wolstenholme will be best remembered for his commentary, specifically the impromptu words "Some people are on the pitch... they think it's all over... it is now" as a small pitch invasion took place just as Geoff Hurst scored to put England 4–2 ahead. This iconic phrase has become part of World Cup folk law.
