"C.Q.D.", Tribute Medal 1909, a silver medal, the obverse with a view of the holed passenger ship the SS Republic, the reverse with inscription `For Gallantry` upon the central panel, the surround inscribed `From the saloon passengers of the RMS Baltic and RMS Republic to the officers and crew of the SS Republic, Baltic and Florida commemorating the rescue of over 1700 souls January 24th 1909`, with a white star emblem at the bottom. The Italian steamer Florida had collided with the white star liner Republic off the coast of New York, the Republics Wireless Operator using Marconi`s recently developed transmitter sent out the first ever emergency distress signal (CQ = attention all stations, D = distress), this was the forerunner to the SOS signal. The passengers on the Baltic decided to recognise the bravery of the seamen with a medal which was struck by Ralph Ingersoll, an American watch manufacturer who had been on board. In April 1912 the RMS Baltic sent ice warnings to the RMS Titanic before that ship sank, together with some research (Illustrated)
