An important and scarce group of medals awarded over three wars: The Second South African (Boer) War; WWI and WWII to Thomas Henry Searby BATES (5008) born 18 May 1881 to include two Distinguished Service Medals (DSM) (George V & VI); Queens South African Medal with South Africa 1899-1902 and Cape Colony Claspe; a 1914/15 Star Victory Medal & RNRLS Medals together with news paper cutting, certificate of service and navigation committee certificate inc. masters in original box (please note there is a slight difference on side engraving). This collection is being sold by the family. Originally from Grimsby petty officer Thomas Bates served in three wars and twice awarded the DSM he served as a skipper of a minesweeper in the second world war. He was awarded his initial DSM for war services in 1914-1918, he also held long service medal having served in three wars. He was 60 years old whilst serving in the second world war but was discharged due to ill health. In peace-time he was in the fishing industry sailing from Grimsby chiefly as a mate although he held a skipper certificate. his two sons served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during the second world war. Luigi Gorrini Italian Battle of Britain signature piece comes with signed white card and 10x8 black and white photo. Luigi Gorrini, MOVM (12 July 1917 – 8 November 2014), was an Italian World War II fighter pilot in the Regia Aeronautica and in the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana. During the conflict he flew with the Corpo Aereo Italiano (CAI, Italian Air Corps) during the Battle of Britain, fought over Libya and Tunisia, and was involved in the defence of the Italian mainland. Gorrini was credited with 19 (24 according to some sources) enemy planes shot down plus 9 damaged, of several types: Curtiss P-40, Spitfire, P-38 Lightning, P-47 Thunderbolt, B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator. He claimed his air victories flying the biplane Fiat C. R. 42 and monoplanes Macchi C. 202 and C. 205 Veltro. Gorrini was the top scoring C. 205 pilot. With the Veltro he shot down 14 enemy planes and damaged six more. He was the highest ranking Italian ace still alive until his death, and the only surviving fighter pilot awarded the Medaglia d'Oro al Valor Militare (Gold Medal of Military Valor). Good Condition. SVEND HAMMERSHOI - a rare Art Nouveau Danish silver vase, fluted stylised form with relief embossed floral decoration and pierced stem, made and marked by Holger Kyster (1872-1944), height 11.5cm, 6.2oz Notes: In 1925, Hammershøi (together with Holger Kyster) was awarded a gold medal at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in Paris for his silverware. Hammershøi became a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1925 and in 1944 he received the Thorvaldsen Medal. Very good overall condition, no obvious damage or repair, body has some very light dents and surface scratches all over, high points are also very lightly rubbed, silver is heavy gauge and sits perfectly flat, marks on underside are clear.
