Patroclus is the most trusted and loyal of Achilles' men and throughout the poem Achilles acts as his mentor and protector. Patroclus begs his permission to borrow Achilles' armour and go out against the Trojans. Achilles reluctantly agrees and Patroclus is subsequently killed by the Trojan leader Hector. Achilles, furious and grieving his loss, seeks revenge on Hector, which ultimately results in the Greek victory in the battle of Troy. Condition Report: Canvas has been relined. Some abrasions to the edges and specks of dirt and household paint. Paint is slightly thin in places and the canvas weave is visible. Inspection under UV reveals areas of scattered retouching, but no signs or tears or damages. The varnish layer is slightly discoloured. Condition Report Disclaimer
pastel on paper, signed, titled label versoframed and under glassimage size 37cm x 25cm, overall size 55cm x 42cmLabel verso: The Open Eye Gallery, EdinburghNote: Keith Bowen was born in Denbighshire, North Wales in 1950. He studied Graphic Design at the Faculty of Art & Design, Manchester Polytechnic between 1969 and 1972. He has exhibited extensively and received justifiable acclaim. Amongst a host of awards, Keith has twice received the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales. In 1997 he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the University of Wales. Two Royal Mail Stamps and two books, ‘Snowdon Shepherd’ and ‘Among the Amish’ feature his paintings of the countryside. Keith writes of his work: “For the first time at the age of twelve, I stood on the top of Snowdon; I had found something that I wanted to do and somewhere that I wanted to be. Forty-five years later, I am still stumbling around the Welsh hills, and I still feel that initial excitement and fascination with the place. However, these days, I am as likely to visit those remote places that are away from the high peaks, places that are neglected and unremarkable, the forgotten, old and strange back country: Y Cefn Gwlad". Collections include: The National Library of Wales, The National Trust, National Postal Museum, Oriel Ynys Mon (Llangefni), Denbighshire County Council and Leicestershire County Council. Keith Bowen's pictures appear at auctions infrequently but on 16th July 2022 Rogers & Jones (Cardiff) sold two of his pastels (lots 411 & 412) for £2000 & £4200 (both hammer).
oil on canvas, signed, titled label versoframedimage size 46cm x 62cm, overall size 64cm x 80cm Label verso: Eduardo Alessandro Studios, Dundee.Note: Ken Moroney was born on the 14th February 1949 in South London. Of Anglo Irish parentage, his father was typical of his generation and worried about Ken’s artistic temperament which he viewed as effeminate. As a result Ken took up boxing and won a gold medal for South London in his teens. His art continued to flourish with his trademark striking use of colour. His main medium was oils and he favoured romantic subjects of Edwardian times. Ken travelled extensively and spent 2 years working for major galleries in New York. The Royal Academy nominated him in 1976 as being one of the few promising young artists to emerge this century: "Ken Moroney has considerable talent, any painting purchased now can only be seen as a sound long term investment." Ken Moroney's work now hangs in many important collections and his paintings have been exhibited at The Royal Academy (London), and the Kline Galleries (Canada). Ken's work has also been exhibited at Frost and Reed, Bourne Gallery, Hollywood Road Gallery, Thompson's Gallery, Gallery Kaleidoscope, David Messum's Gallery, John Davies in Stowe-on-the-Would, Duncan Miller Fine Art, London and American Connection and at The Arts Club, 40 Dover Street, Mayfair, London.
