WW2 French Croix du Guerre Medal and D-Day Invasion Map of Sergeant H J Mullinex, Mentioned in Despatches for D-Day and Later Operations in Normandy Whilst Serving with 101 Beach Sub-Area Signals, Royal Corps of Signals, the medal dated 1939 with star to the medal ribbon and housed in the original forwarding box. The medal is accompanied by the rare D-Day landings map of Sword Beach, “BOGUS MAP SHEET 3”, the map which was produced with the three sections of the invasion beach marked, PETER, QUEEN and ROGER. The map was called BOGUS map, as it gave false information of area names etc, with the places being changed with famous European cities, such as Lisbon, Vienna, Tunis, Dresden, plus others. The title of the map is “CAIRO”, printed in red is “NEPTUNE BIGOT TOP SECRET COPY No ……”. Accompanying the medal and map is a later applied for citation (22 Sept 1980) from the French Government for the award of the Croix de Guerre medal that was awarded in 1945, plus other paperwork (copies) from the Ministry of Defence and other official sources. Henry John Mullinex was from Chester, he was employed by the G.P.O as a engineer. He was a keen musician. He enlisted in the Royal Corps of Signals in 1939 and served throughout the whole of the war. He was mentioned in despatches, appearing in the London Gazette 22nd March 1945, a recommendation for the award was obtained from the Ministry of Defence by his family and is as follows, “1496973 W/Sergeant H. J. Mullinex, R Signals 101 Beach Sub-Area Signals. Sgt Mullinex landed early on D-Day. He immediately took charge of all line-laying parties. Despite enemy action he persisted in repairing lines and reorganising line parties. In several cases intervening country had not been cleared of the enemy. He constantly reconnoitred roads and tracks until he finally completed his line tasks. At all times he displayed initiative in the repair and maintenance of lines, often at personal risk. His disregard for danger was an example to his men during weeks which followed D-Day. He devotion to duty never wavered.” The award of the Croix de Guerre was for “Exceptional war services rendered on the occasion of the operations of Liberation of France”. Henry Mullinex died in 1964. This lot has been consigned by direct family descent of Henry Mullinex, who states that the map was acquired by her father “the officer leading had a meltdown in a foxhole. They had to hold him down and knock him out”. Please see the next lot for Henry Mullinex brothers medals, photograph album and diaries, who served with the RAF during WW2.

Scarce Folkestone, Hythe and Sandgate Silver Medal for Bravery in the Lifeboat Rescue of the Crew from the Stricken Sailing Vessel Benvenue That Went Aground in a Violent Storm off the Kent Coast at Sandgate 11th November 1891, Folkestone, Hythe and Sandgate medal, silver, the reverse engraved “FOLKESTONE, HYTHE AND SANDGATE TO JOHN NEALE, 11TH NOVEMBER 1891, ‘HE BRAVELY DID HIS DUTY’. Remains in very good condition. On the 11th November 1891, during a violent storm, the fully rigged sailing ship Benvenue ran aground approximately 500m off the coast at Sandgate. The Sandgate lifeboat made a valiant attempt to reach the ship but was overturned in the rough sea 50m off the coast resulting in the death of 1 of the crew. The hull of the Benvenue was now fully submerged with the surviving crew lashing themselves into the rigging to stay out of the stormy sea. Unsuccessful attempts were made with rocket apparatus to get a line to the ship and at midday a 12-pounder artillery piece from 52nd Battery RFA were brought down from Shorncliffe to attempt to shoot a line to the ship, but the force of the discharge was so strong that the line broke on each attempt. Assistance was requested from the Dover Lifeboat which then set off round the headland to the wreck site but was later recalled, in the meantime a scratch crew of Coastguard men and local fishermen was put together and the Sandgate lifeboat was relaunched. In heavy seas and with great difficulty the boat made its way to the Benvenue and after 16 hours in the rigging the surviving 27 members of the original crew of 32 were rescued and taken to Folkestone harbour being greeted by cheers from the large crowd that had gathered there. Sir Edward Watkin, one of the Directors of the South Eastern Railway, made monetary awards to the rescuers and decided that a medal should also be awarded to those involved in the rescue. The medal was designed by his wife, the medal dies were produced by Sir Albert Gilbert (the sculptor of the ‘Eros’ statue in Piccadilly Circus). The medals were presented at Folkestone Town Hall on 1st January 1892 by the Mayor, Mr s Penfold who started his speech with the words ‘The very pleasing duty now devolves upon me of distributing the medals which have been so kindly given by Sir Edward Watkin, to those men who on 11th November, gallantly went out in the lifeboat at different periods of the day, for the purpose of rescuing men in danger of their lives’. The Folkestone Herald newspaper published on 2nd January 1892 has a list of 34 names that were presented with the medal at this event and present in the list of names is John Neal (sic). John Neale was a 44 year old Gardener/General labourer living in Sandgate at this time. An enquiry was held on 17-18th of November investigating the loss of life when the lifeboat overturned, evidence was given by John Neale who was present in the lifeboat, he stated that he too had a narrow escape, having, in endeavouring reach the shore, received a blow to the head.

An Early Royal National Lifeboat Institution Medal for the Rescue of Crew from a Ship Trapped on the Goodwin Sands 3rd April 1851, Royal National Institution For the Preservation of Life From Shipwreck medal, George IV. Edge of the medal is engraved “P. SACHETT HANSELL VOTED 3RD APRIL 1851”. Research conducted on this medal leads us to believe that this is the medal awarded to 22 year old Paul Sacket Ansell, a member of the Broadstairs Lifeboat that saved 7 out of the 10 members of the crew of the brig ‘Mary White’ which was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands, 6th of March 1851. Reports in the Portsmouth Times and Naval Gazette 15th March 1851, give additional information on the event stating that the 270 ton brig was seen on the sands at daybreak, the large luggers in the area could not get close enough to rescue the crew. 8 young seamen launched the lifeboat into the rough sea, it being so strong that it was feared that the crew would be drowned, at 10.30am the brig rolled over and disappeared and it was not until 3pm that the lifeboat was resighted, being towed into Ramsgate port by one of the larger vessels having rescued 7 of the 10 crew of the Mary White.

R.N.”. Remains in generally good condition. Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire in September 1773, George Fox joined the Royal Navy as Able Seaman in July 1795. Joining H.M.S. Malabar, he served at Demerara, Essequibo, Berbice and Ste. Lucie and was present in the Malabar when she foundered on 10th October 1796 on her return home from the West Indies. Subsequently he served in Pelter and was appointed Midshipman in HMS Pallas and was present when she was wrecked in Plymouth Sound on 4th April 1798. Service followed in Foudrayant, Barfleur and Queen Charlotte, flag-ships of Lord Keith under whom he saw action against the French fleet in the Mediterranean and in the blockade of Malta. After assisting Lord Cochrane by navigating the captured French ship of the line, Le Généreux, into Minorca in February 1800 he then followed Cochrane into the Speedy where at one point he was given charge of a prize ship and convoy and succeeded beating off several attacking ships. He then joined Lord Keith in HMS Minotaur and in June 1800 'Fox witnessed the fall of Genoa; from the mole of which place he had the singular good fortune, after the battle of Marengo, of effecting the deliverance of a British 64 [gun] and two transports, all of which but for his own individual exertions would inevitably have been destroyed. The courage and ability displayed by Mr. Fox on this occasion were so marked as to render his enrolment among the officers of their ship an object of ambition to many of the Captains of Lord Keith's fleet, but so high was the opinion entertained of his merits by the Admiral that he was unwilling to part with him, and in consequence retained his services until enabled, on his having passed his examination, to promote him to Lieutenant. Previously to that event, which took place on 23 August 1801, Mr. Fox, who had followed Lord Keith into the Foudroyant, further attended the expedition to Egypt, and had the honour, when Sir Ralph Abercromby was brought on board with his death-wound, to conduct that heroic chief to the cabin which had been assigned to his use.' (O’Byrne) Returning to Minotaur on his promotion he returned home in her and was paid off. Home station commands followed with periods at Sheerness, Watchful and Brevdrageren. Retiring as Commander on 20th January 1847, he died in 1853. Previously Sold: Baldwin July 1965, Glendining February 1973 and July 1978, Sotheby June 1984 and D.N.W. December 2013.
