A WW1 medal pair, awarded to Captain W.T.Olver MRCVS of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Plus, a nice quality gilt metal and enamel badge of the RAVC (this would seem to have been adapted from a cap badge). Information supplied by the vendor suggests that Capt Olver was Mayor of Tamworth from 1929-1932, and was a J.P in 1938. Condition: the obverse and reverse of the medals are good, but there has been an attempt to erase the naming to both medals. There is still enough detail left to make out the rank and name. To include: the British War Medal, Victory Medal, and Death Plaque, all housed in a period framed with glazed front. Notes: Rifleman / Pte Pead was a native of Bow in London. Official records state that he was originally reported missing on May 21st 1917, but it was later reported that he was killed in action on the same day. Records also state that his service reckons from January 21st 1917 through to May 21st 1917, meaning that his time served was tragically exactly 4 calendar months. He was 22 at the time of his death, and he is commemorated at the Arras Memorial. Frame size 31.5cm x 36.6cm. Condtion: generally good. A few small chips to the edge of the frame. His IGS medal noted his rank as Acting Sergeant, whereas his LSGC medal notes it as being Private. Conditon; very good. A number of the ribbons appear to be later replacements, and all the medals are loosely mounted on a card backing. Fine contact marks to each from service wear.

Lot 134

A WW1 diary, photographs, and letters related to 57929 Spr R. Phillips 36th Division Signalling Company Royal Engineers. Robert later won the Military Medal for bravery in 1918. Notes: the diary doubles up as an address book and notebook or sorts, with details of the names and addresses of friends and relatives, handwritten morse code translation, and dates of Sapper Phillips movements through Europe, from October 1915 through to 11th November 1918, where he poignantly writes ‘Armistice accepted 11/11/18 at 11 o’clock’. In an entry for September 29th, Spr Phillips writes, ‘When we were getting our breakfast we heard the bad news of Sgt Jackson and 4 others being killed at Ypres, and Lt Wilson and the others being wounded’. Another entry reads: ‘We had to shift our office down to a pill box. When that was done the rear party and cook came up and we got dinner, and a wash and shave and dried ourselves. Bert and I then made a cover for ourselves with two sheets of corrugated iron. When we were doing that Fritz sent some new sort of shells over. We did not hear them coming until they burst’. Also included is touching letter, written by Robert’s friend and brother in arms, Bertie Jackson. Bertie writes to a Mrs Phillips, Robert’s mother in County Armagh. He movingly writes about how he lost his brother during operations, and how Robert’s companionship in the Signal Company kept him from sinking under his loss. Spr Phillips is entitled to the Military Medal, 1915 Star, BWM, and Victory Medal.  He entered the conflict in France on October 3rd 1915. His Military Medal award appears in the London Gazette on June 17th 1919 (page 7657). The Gazette is numbered 63 which would indicate that his MM was won in October 1918. A newspaper clipping included in the lot would seem to confirm that Robert served in the military after WW1, and possibly during WW2. Condition: Generally good, but some wear and tear associated with age and use.

Lot 135

A WW1 British officers marching compass, by Negretti & Zambra. Brass body with black painted finish, viewing window to the lid and suspension ring. Mother of pearl dial with luminescent arrow, and brass stop button to the side. Broad arrow and maker marked to the bottom. Complete with its original leather case and strap, named to ‘M Blakeway Royal Tank Corps’. Officially embossed maker mark and date of ‘T.F.&S 1916’. Notes: consigned by the original owners granddaughter. Malcolm Blakeway entered the war on August 10th 1915, and originally served as a 2nd Lt in the 1st battalion Yorks & Lancs Regiment. He later attained his Captaincy while serving in the Tank Corps. He is entitled to the 1915 star, BWM, and Victory medal. He was a native of Handsworth, Birmingham, and later of Chaddesley Kidderminster. It’s believed that he also held a commission during WW2, again as a Captain in the Royal Armoured Corps. He relinquished this commission on August 16th 1945, and was granted the honorary rank of Major. Condition: generally very good. Normal service wear to both the compass and its case. There appears to be a zig-zag pattern lightly scratched into the lid of the compass, likely from the WW1 era (perhaps a moment of boredom?). The compass appears to work as it should, with the stop button also functional. The leather case has a good colour and patina. It may have had a different original owner during WW1, as there is another name inked out on the case.

Lot 121

A 1915 Star trio, awarded to Pte Oswald F. Binnington of the Army Cyclist Corps, and later the Cheshire Regiment. To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. He saw service in South Africa, and is entitled to the Queen’s South African medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 & 1902. His entitlement to the clasp for his 1914 star is confirmed by the original rolls. He also saw service with the Mounted Military Police from 1916. Condition: very good. Complete with what appear to be the original ribbons.

Lot 70

Lot 51

A WW1 1914 star trio, plus cap badges, awarded to 5589 A/Cpl Frederick Henry Sharp of the 12th Lancers, later Army Veterinary Corps, and the 1st Cheshire Regiment. To include: a 1914 star with finely gilded finish, a British War Medal, Victory medal, plus a 12th Lancers cap badge, and an economy pattern Cheshire Regiment cap badge. Notes: Frederick Sharp first attested for service in 1902, joining the 12th Lancers. Service with the Lancers appears to have continued until 1917, when he joined the Army Veterinary Corps, and finally the Cheshire Regiment. He used 2 other service numbers, those being 898 and 51451. Through his career he saw service at Home, in India, as part of the British Expeditionary force in 1914 in France. He was discharged as ‘not fit for the war’ on February 18th 1918, with cardiac issues. He died at home in the U.K on August 24th 1918, and is interred at Acton Cemetery. His name does appear on the Commonwealth War Graves website, suggesting the he was classed as casualty of war, despite him being discharged at the time of his death. His medal index card confirms that he did not receive the clasp and roses. Condition: generally good. The 1914 star retains its gilt finish, with just a few fine scratches to the reverse. The BWM and Victory have toned with age, as have the cap badges.

Lot 16

A WW1 1914 Star trio, awarded 9718 Pte / Sjt Alfred M. Agate of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. To include: the 1914 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: the medal index card does not mention the clasp & roses entitlement for the 1914 star, but given the regimental movement of the 1st Scots Fusiliers in 1914, it would appear almost certain that he qualified for it. If he never made an attempt to claim the clasp through the official channels, it would not appear on his MIC. His rank appears as Sergeant on both the BWM and Victory Medal. Condition: generally good. Some age related toning to the medals, and limited signs of polishing. Complete with original ribbons.

Lot 5

An emotive WW1 and WW2 Father and Son casualty group. To include: a 1914 Star trio, with death plaque, scroll, a privately awarded bereavement certificate from the County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent, plus a memorial card - all awarded to 7469 Pte Albert Arthur Walton, North Staffordshire Regiment. The WW2 grouping awarded to his son, also Albert Arthur Walton of the Northamptonshire Regiment, includes the 1939-45 Star, the Burma Star, the 1939-45 War Medal, and the Defence Medal. Plus, his WW2 paybook, period photographs, military related paperwork, and a card for good service signed by Louis Mountbatten. Incredibly, we also have the bullet removed from Pte Walton’s shoulder after being shot on active service in Burma. Notes: Pte A. Walton of the North Staffordshire Regiment entered the war on 10/09/1914 and was killed in action on Valentine’s Day 1915. His grave can be found at the Chapelle - D’armentieres Old Military Cemetry in France. According to his medal index card, Pte Walton is entitled to the clasp for hte 1914 star, but this would have needed to have been claimed by the soldier or his next of kin. There is no record to our knowledge of the clasp ever having been issued to Pte Walton’s next of kin. Albert’s son, also Albert, was born on October 19th 1912, and was around 2 and half years old when his father was killed in action. He served in the Northamptonshire Regiment with the service number 5054905, from June 1940 through to February 1946. Albert was known to have served in Burma during WW2 and his medical history sheet has an entry for January 8th 1945 stating that he was ‘wounded in action’, which we known to have been a gun shot wound to the shoulder. 3 months later the bullet was removed, and the actual bullet was kept as a souvenir. Pte Walton’s injury and subsequent disablement in later years earned him the Kings Badge (not included in sale), and a hand signed ‘card for good service’ from Louis Mountbatten on Jan 1st 1946. Condition: generally good to most pieces. The WW1 1914 star trio have toned dark, and the BWM and Victory medal are minus their ribbons. The death plaque and scroll are also good, but the scroll has been mounted on card. The Stoke-on-Trent certificate has creases and tears to the edge. The WW2 group appears to have never been worn, with the medals still being in their paper packets. The paperwork associated with the medals has age related wear, but is mostly good condition. The Mountbatten card is mounted on card.

Lot 43

To include: the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Territorial Force War Medal, and the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal. Notes: Gnr Willmett’s medal index card confirms the medals as his full entitlement. His TF medal using his pre-war service number of 397. Condition: very good. Some age related toning to the medals, and limited signs of polishing. The ribbons would appear to be original, with each having small amounts of age related wear.

Lot 21

To include: a BWM and Victory Medal, Territorial Force War Medal, General Service Medal with clasps for Kurdistan and Iraq, and the Territorial Efficiency Medal (George V). Notes: Percy Parton’s service number before embarkation was 1036667, before changing to 604047. His WW1 medal index card confirms his BWM, Victory Medal, TF medal, and his GSM (with both the Iraq and Kurdistan clasps mentioned). The Kurdistan clasp is loose on the ribbon, with the Iraq clasp being fixed. His address is noted as being in Wellington, Shropshire. Condition: generally good. Some service wear and polishing, plus age toning. The ribbons appear to be original, and have a little wear in places. The GSM has an edge bruise, as seen in the images.

Lot 142

An interesting collection of ephemera related to M2/032725 Company Sergeant Major Thomas Daniel Johnson, Army Service Corps Motor Boat Company, who served during WW1 in the in Egyptian Expeditionary Force 1915-1918. To include a 1916 dinner menu from H.M. Transport ship S.S. Llandovery Castle, a journal containing numerous hand drawn and painted cartoons and other illustrations, all produced by soldiers serving in the Expeditionary Force. 4 loose period military photographs of Company Sgt Mjr Johnson, a WW1 era photograph album (dated between 1915 and 1918), showing him on active service, various boats, motor transport vehicles and locations in Egypt. Plus, an autograph album containing various signatures of musicians and conductors, plus more illustrations. A 1920’s / 30’s photograph album, with some of the images showing members of the Royal Family at fox hunt meeting (Prince of Wales, Duke of York, and Prince Henry). A WW1 era Palestine News newspaper dated March 7th 1918, a Daily Telegraph newspaper dated May 8th 1945, and various George V era stamps. Notes: C.S.M. Johnson embarked 06/04/15 and is entitled to the 1915 star, BWM, and Victory Medal. The hand drawn illustrations within the journal vary in quality, with some clearly by amateur hands, and others of almost professional quality. Some illustrations may have been considered ‘risqué’ at the time, but are fairly tame by modern standards. There are also several patriotic illustrations within the album. Condition: generally good to most items. Normal wear and tear commensurate with their age.

Lot 14

A WW1 casualty par, awarded to 15387 L/Cpl Stanley Burr of the 2nd Grenadier Guards. To include: the British War Medal, and Victory Medal. Notes; Stanley was killed in action, aged 22, between September 14th 1914 and September 16th 1914. He is commemorated at the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial. His Medal Index Card confirms his entitlement to the 1914 Star and clasp. A photocopy of the 2nd Grenadier Guards war diary is included with the lot, and this states that the Battalion crossed the River Aisne to take up battle positions on September 14th 1914. It continued to remain in Battle Outpost Position through the 15th and 16th of September, and due to the heavy shelling they received, this likely accounts for the uncertainty of his date of death. Condition: very good / almost mint condition. As mentioned above, the 1914 star is absent from the group.

Lot 100

WW1 Officer pair, awarded to Captain Arthur Blake of the 25th (2nd Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. To include: the British War Medal, and Victory Medal. Captain Blake was formerly a Sergeant in the 11th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment (using the service number 22271). Notes: Captain Blake’s medal index card confirms the pair as his only entitlement. He received his commission as a 2nd Lt on November 27th 1917. Condition: very good. Normal age related toning to the medals, each of which is loosely mounted on to a card backing. Complete with original silk ribbons.

This group includes the British War Medal and Victory Medal, and interestingly a 2-page handwritten letter from J.H.Kelly to T.W.Kelly, dated November 16th 1916. Notes: Thomas William Kelly was a native of Burton-upon-Trent. He originally landed in France on June 28th 1915. His Military Medal is gazetted on June 17th 1919 as part of schedule number 63. This would likely date the action that earned him the MM to October 1918. At the time of his award he was serving with the 6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was later discharged from service in February 1919, under paragraph 392 of army regulations, which meant that he was unfit for further service. His SWB was subsequently awarded in 1920. Spr John Henry (Harry) Kelly’s medal pair are confirmed as his full entitlement. His medal index card suggests that he also at one time served in the North Staffordshire Regiment. The silver cigarette case weighs 137.2g.

Lot 50A

Notes: John Benjamin Clarke died of wounds on May 8th 1917 while serving with the 13th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He is commemorated at the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. Plus, a WW2 era 1939-45 war medal with card Air Ministry mailing box, a late 19th century bronze double sided medallion depicting Colonel Fred Burnaby, and Lord Randolph Churchill (complete with original fitted case). Notes: Frederick Newman had originally attested fro service in 1902 at the age of 18. His service record states that he served initially in the U.K, and by 1903 was posted to South Africa. He was part of the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914, and disembarked on August 27th 1914. There appears to be no record of a clasp being earned or issued for the 1914 star, and the trio of medals appears to be his only entitlement. Condition: generally good. The medals are toned with age, and each retains its original silk ribbon. Of note is that the suspension ring on the Victory medal has been squashed.

Each of the medals has age related toning, and each is loosely mounted on a card backing.

To include: a Military Cross, unnamed as issued, 1915 Star, BWM, and Victory Medal, with oak leaf MID emblem attached to ribbon. Additionally, there is also an original maroon coloured leather fitted case for the Military Cross. Notes: Lt Hawkins won his M.C on January 14th 1916, and his M.I.D was gazetted January 1st 1916. He appears to have been an officer in the interwar years, even into WW2 according to the Army Lists. The Military Cross has the attributes of known originals, with the correct sized arms of the cross, and suspension bar. The suspension lug is the correct tombstone shape and is slightly set back from the front of the bar. The suspension hole on does not appear to be bevelled, as is seen on some MC’s, but this alone is not a cause for suspicion. All 4 medals are mounted on a bar for wear. Condition: very good. Toning to all of the medals, with minimal signs of polishing. Original ribbons to each medal. The MC case does have some external wear and tear. (The Military Cross fits the case perfectly).

He was discharged on May 10th 1915, with the reason being cited as him being ‘physically unfit’. He is entitled to the Silver War Badge number 33655. His medal index card does not mention his entitlement to the clasp and rose. Condition: generally good. The medals have been mounted in the court style in more recent times, using replacement ribbons. They have toned with age and there is a little wear from polishing. The attachment of the silver rose to the ribbon is erroneous, as it should only be worn on a ribbon bar when attached to a uniform.

To include: the British War Medal, Victory Medal, death plaque, and a good quality mahogany frame with strut back. Because of the way that the medals are mounted in frame, you can just read the service number to identify the soldier. The frame also contains remnants of the original condolence slip which would have been sent to Pte Nolan’s family. Notes: Pte Nolan died of wounds on October 12th 1917 aged 20 years old, and is commemorated at the Nice Elms British Cemetery in Belgium. he was the son of John & Catherine Nolan of Kirkdale, Liverpool. John’s medal index card confirms the pair as his full entitlement. The mahogany frame measures approximately 49cm height x 30.5cm width. Condition: generally very good. The edges of the wooden frame have a few very small and minor knocks, but these don’t detract. As the frame is sealed to the back, we’ve not been able to fully inspect the medals and plaque within, but the visible front sides appear to be good. There is some normal toning to the metal, and the ribbons have faded a little from sunlight. The glazing to the frame is intact, but there is horizontal surface scratch to the glass on the bottom panel containing the medals.

British WW1 1914 trio to 7255 Pte E.W Walters the 2nd Battalion Welsh Regiment of 1914 Mons Star with loose later bar, War Medal and Victory Medal.

The death plaque is in good order, but the frame has several cracks to the edge, but this doesn’t detract.

Lot 26

The medals are mounted on a bar for wear, with each hanging on their original silk ribbons.
