A Rare Hong Kong Plague Medal 1894 to Private W. Read of the King`s Shropshire Light Infantry (Private. W. Read, S.L.I.), mounted on a swivel, within a silver hallmarked brooch for wearing, together with a written note `There is a mistake in the printed account of this medal. It was not given to all the officers and men of this Regiment, as stated, only to the few who volunteered for this service. In fact only two of these medals came to Bristol. Until the air-raids on Bristol, where was one of these medals in a case of rare medals in the Bristol Museum. The Chinese lettering on the front of the medal means "Flowery City" which is the Chinese name for the town of Hong Kong. Being a civilian decoration, the men were not allowed to wear the medal on its ribbon.` A Belgian Leopold II Five Franc Coin, mounted within a silver brooch, (2).

Phillips, 83rd Squadron, Royal Air Force Reserve, 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, War Medal 1939-45, in card box of issue, together with related paperwork. 87413 Pilot Officer Anthony Frank Phillips, 83 Squadron, Royal Air Force Reserve, died on the 7th of April 1941 aged 21. Son of Frederick Henry and Edith Eva Phillips of Putney Heath, London, he is Remembered with Honour at the Runnymeade Memorial. 83 Squadron flew Hampden Bombers, based at Scampton Lincolnshire. The Squadron flew operational sorties on Berlin, and were involved with the attacks on the Scharnhorst, Tirpitz and Von Scheer. On the night of 6/7th April 1941 Hampden X2899 OL-D was lost without trace, on a mine lying off Brittany & Frisians, with crew of P/O A. E. Jackson DFM, P/O A F Phillips, Sgt. W A Foster and Sgt M A Hollingshead.

Young, 7th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry, Mortally Wounded at `The Island` - `Operation Market Garden`, 23rd September 1944, Military Cross, GRVI GRI, (1944), in case of issue, 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, together with related photographs, paperwork and a silver-plated tankard, inscribed `To 2nd Lieut. S.C.W.Young O.C. Detachment. B. coy. 7th Bn. S.L.I. from N.C.O.`s and men. 19th October 1939` 90837 Major Sydney Charles Wayman Young MC was killed in action on Saturday 23rd of September 1944, aged 30, Son of Edward and Annie Young; Husband of Beatrice Young of Yeovil, Somerset, he is Remembered with Honour at the Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Nijmegen 22nd September `Dawn broke on the 22nd September with a heavy mist hanging over the Waal. Profiting by it, two troops of the 2 Household Cavalry Regiment, succeeded in slipping through by way of the Bund to the Neder Rijn. The third troop, however, clashed with an enemy tank which knocked out the leading armoured car and incidentally drove Brigader Essame in his Jeep, off the Bund. Closely behind came the Vanguard Company, D Company of the 7 Somerset Light Infantry, under Major Sidney Young, followed by the remainder of the battalion. Enemy Infantry and a tank now came to life on the southern fringes of the village of Oosterhout and pinned the leading platoon to the ground. Major Sidney Young in making his reconnaissance was mortally wounded. Thus passed one of the best and bravest company commanders of a Division even more than usually fortunate in the high standards of officers of his rank`. Military Cross Citation - Major S.C.W. Young, 7 Som Li On 2 Jul 44 at Tourville this officer led a composite battle patrol of infantry, carriers, Anti-Tank Guns and 3-inch Mortars to obtain information of enemy disposition in Verson and Jemeaux. Throughout the operation he showed great initiative and skill in handling the force under his command and penetrating 3 miles into enemy territory, obtained valuable information of concealed enemy MG and Mortar emplacements which had been harassing our own positions. in addition to wounding or killing six of the enemy, the patrol was able to give information which subsequently enabled our troops to be more suitably disposed for a forthcoming operation. Throughout the operation his confidence and personal bravery inspired his men in accomplishing a bold venture with outstanding success.

Literature – Louisa M Alcott^ American author^ slavery abolitionist and suffrage activist a finely carved walnut lady’s hand mirror^ inscribed to verso ‘Louisa Alcott^ from Rhyden Boyce^ Georgetown 1862-63 Incl[usive]’ Approx 320x160mm. Provenance: The item comes with a letter dated September 16th 1939 from Miss E Hayes of Manchester which states: ‘This small hand mirror was once the property of the famous American authoress Luisa May Alcott. ‘I inherited it from my late uncle Peter Richardson who descendants were active in the abolitionist movement in the USA and who were friends with her. It was made by Rhyden Boyce^ a Unionist soldier whom she nursed during the American Civil War. You can make out the inscription on the reverse. It also has her initials carved in the top scrolle. My uncle’s family actually did personal work for Miss Alcott even after she became quite famous even including her personal washing.’ Together with a WWII medal issued to Miss Hayes and a photograph of her in WWII uniform
