Interesting First World War and later Canadian medal group , comprising War and Victory, named to 225115 A. CPL. E. J. COE. 26 - CAN. INF. and Second World War Defence medal, together with a silver War badge and photograph of the then Private Coe's shattered femur after being wounded at the front, alongside the bullet that caused it! Edward Coe settled in Wivenhoe after the First World War, joining the St. John Ambulance and becoming an active part of the local church in the years afterwards, various St. John badges are also included along with an Order of St. John Long Service medal

ORDERS AND DECORATIONS, 勳章, Qing Dynasty清朝: Foochow Arsenal Gold Medal 褔州船政成功大清御賜金牌, ND (c.1874), Obv “大” and “清” at top separated by a pearl, “御賜金牌” at centre flanked by two facing dragons, Rev “褔州船政成功” flanked by clouds, all on a stippled field within scroll border, 51.8mm, 90.07g (Li Gongqing p.60). As made and very rare. ex Singapore Coin Auction 10, Spink/Taisei, 20-21 February 1991, lot 271 Made by the Imperial Palace Construction Section 造辦處 and presented to members of the European team led by French Navy officer Prosper Marc Giquel and his colleague Paul d’Aiguebelle upon completion of the Foochow Arsenal in Mawei 馬尾, Foochow 褔州 in 1874. The Arsenal was first proposed by Governor of Fukien and Chekiang Tso Tsung-Tang 閩浙總督左宗棠 and supervised by Minister of Naval Affairs Shen Pao-Chen 船政大臣沈葆楨
MEDALS, 中國 - 紀念章, Qing Dynasty 清朝 / Germany 德國: Silver Medal, Boxer Rebellion 八國聯軍, Battle of the Taku Forts, 1900, by Oertel (Berlin), Obv starboard view of the German gunboat SMS Iltis, Rev birds eye panorama of the mouth of the Hai River with the forts, fortifications and ships depicted and named, BOMBARDEMENT DER TAKU FORTS 1900, 34.5mm (MH 421; Marienb 7172). Good very fine. SMS Iltis, the second ship of that name on the China station, was 880 tons, 1300 hp and carried eight 3.4in guns. Built in Gdansk and launched in August 1898, she came into service 1 December 1898. Her Commander, Lieutenant Wilhelm Andreas Jacob Emil Lans (1861-1947), was wounded in the action. The Siege of the Legations commenced on the 20 June 1900, three days after this action. Following the outbreak of World War I, SMS Iltis was scuttled in Kiau Chau.
MEDALS, 中國 - 紀念章, Qing Dynasty 清朝 / Great Britain 英國: Silver China War Medal, Boxer Rebellion 八國聯軍 1900, no clasp (W. Butcher, LG. STO 1. CL, H.M.S. DIDO), officially impressed, first initial a little weak. Polished, one or two light marks, very fine. Sold with copy of HMS Dido roll listing him a leading stoker. HMS Dido (5,690 tons) was an Eclipse class protected cruiser launched in 1896.

MEDALS, 中國 - 紀念章, Qing Dynasty 清朝 / Great Britain 英國: Silver China War Medal, Boxer Rebellion 八國聯軍 1900, no clasp (ASST. PAYR.. R. R. HAMER, R.N., H.M.S. ARETHUSA:), officially impressed. Polished, about extremely fine. Assistant Paymaster later Paymaster Commander R.R. Hamer, Royal Navy, served aboard the cruiser HMS Arethusa during the Boxer Rebellion. HMS Arethusa was a Leander class protected cruiser, launched in 1882 (4,300 tons). In the Great War he was present at Jutland, before dying in Simonstown, S Africa in 1942 during the Second World War, having been accounting officer to the Falklands Islands Survey in British Antarctica. R R Hamer had risen to the rank of Paymaster Commander. Sold with copy service records and a quantity of other research.

GOLIATH.); Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Edward VII type (154347 WALTER HALE, P.O. 1CL. H.M.S. DRYAD); Meritorious Service Medal, George V type (154347. W.HALE, P.O. “CANADA”). Very fine, the last better. (3pcs) HMS Goliath (13,160 tons) was a Canopus class pre-dreadnought battleship launched in 1898. She served on the China Station 1900 to 1905 and was sunk during the Dardanelles campaign 13 May 1915. Sold with copy service records and other papers.

Very fine. Waldersee had served as Chief of the German Imperial General Staff from 1888 to 1891. His time in China is defined by his relationship with the Chinese courtesan Sai Jinhua.

CHINA . ANKUNFT I. DEUTSCHLAND, 32mm. Prooflike mint state, rare. Baron Clemens von Ketteler, the German minister Plenipotentiary to China was murdered by the Boxers in June 1900 and von Waldersee was appointed Generalfeldmarschall and sent to China as the Allied Supreme Commander. On his return from China he was appointed an Honorary Knight Grand Cross (Military) of the Order of the Bath.
MEDALS, 中國 - 紀念章, Qing Dynasty 清朝 / Russia 俄羅斯, Nicholas II (1894-1917): Gold Medal, Construction of the Tunnel through the Grand Chingan in Manchuria 滿洲大興安嶺, 1903, by A Griliches Jnr, Obv Russia standing ¾-right, one hand on a shield with the Imperial eagle, the other bracing the plans for the railway, six-line legend above, laurel branch and shield inscribed with the project’s vital dates to the right (“Begun 1901, Completed 1903” - the tunnel, though, would actually be completed in 1904), signed ГРИЛИXЕСЪ СЫНЪ on the groundline, Rev in a central circle a train emerges from the tunnel, which is decorated with a Russian eagle and a Chinese Imperial dragon on either side and 興安嶺 (Chingan mountain range) at the centre, plan of the tunnel above, СООРУЖЕНЪ ОБЩЕСТВОМЪ КИТАЙСКОЙ ВОСТОЧНОЙ Ж. Д. СТРОИТЕЛЬ ТОННЕЛЯ ИНЖ. П. С. Н. Н. БОЧАРОВЪ (Constructed by the East Chinese Railway Society, Tunnel Constructor Engineer N. N. Bocharov), 78mm, 278.1g (Diakov 1385.1 (R5); Sm 1312). Extremely fine, obverse scratch and some minor contact marks, an extremely rare medal of interest to both Russian and Chinese collectors. At the time of its completion, the Hingan Tunnel through the Great Chingan mountain range (Da Xing Gang Ling), traversing 3,078 meters (2½ miles), was Russia’s longest railway tunnel.
