'SOUTHERN SCOTTISH LEAGUE EMERGENCY CUP COMPETITION 1940/41',a silver trophy awarded to James 'Scot' Symon of Rangers F.C., in sterling silver, hallmarked for Birmingham 1940, the cover with footballer finial, the twin handled cup inscribed 'SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION WAR CHALLENGE CUP', on a circular socle base mounted with shield shaped plaque inscribed 'SOUTHERN SCOTTISH LEAGUE EMERGENCY CUP COMPETITION 1940-41 WON BY RANGERS F.C J.S. SYMON', 24cm highNote: This rare and important piece of Scottish footballing history comes from a period of turbulence for the country. Due to the outbreak of World War II, all normal competitions were suspended, with a number of regional tournaments having been set up in their place. Therefore, whilst both the Scottish Football League and Scottish League Cup were no longer contested, the Southern Football League and Southern Football League Cup were held in an unofficial capacity. These were played at a time of unrelenting dominance for Rangers Football Club, them not having gone more than a year without lifting a major trophy since 1917. Indeed, during the so-called 'unofficial' years, the team won all six Southern League titles, as well as four of the six Southern League Cups (losing the other two in the final - one of which was cruelly snatched from them when the game ended in a draw, the winner being decided on who had been awarded the most corners). The trophy offered at McTear's relates to the very first of those Southern League Cup tournaments, dating from 1940-41. The teams were divided into four groups of four, with Rangers topping their group after five wins out of six. They then went on to face St. Mirren in the semi-final, who were defeated in a resounding fashion by four goals to one, allowing Rangers to progress to their first Southern League Cup final. This final was played against Heart of Midlothian at Hampden on the 10th May 1941, with 69,000 fans turning out for the event. This was a more fraught affair than Rangers’ previous games, and, whilst Hearts went one goal up in the first half, a second half equaliser from the light blues pushed the game to a replay. This replay again took place at Hampden just seven days later, this time in front of 90,000 supporters. Whilst Rangers went two up before the thirty minute mark, a goal before the half time whistle put Hearts within distance. The Edinburgh side found themselves back in the game at 70 minutes, when an equaliser put the teams two a-piece. Rangers dug deep for the remaining twenty minutes however, with two lightning quick goals on the 86th and 90th minutes ensuring they lifted the first ever Scottish Southern League Cup.This rather humble looking silver trophy is believed to have been awarded to James 'Scot' Symon for his role in that team (likely in lieu of a medal). Symon's is a name that will need no introduction to many of the Rangers loyal, he having succeeded legendary manager Bill Struth in 1954, steering the club to six league Championships, five Scottish Cups, and four League Cups. He also took Rangers into European football for the first time ever, guiding them to two Cup Winners Cup finals in 1961 and 1967.Perhaps lesser known is Symon's playing career, which at first glance may be deceiving having only made 32 official appearances for Rangers. This, however, does not take into consideration his distinguished service during those 'unofficial' war years. Due to Symon's erstwhile career as an architect, he was to remain in Britain, putting his considerable skills towards the war effort whilst working in a reserved occupation, a draughtsman in the Linthouse shipyard on Govan Road of Alexander Stephen & Sons. During the war, the yard produced aircraft carriers, cruisers, mine-layers, destroyers, sloops, minesweepers and tank transport ferries. This allowed him to continue playing for the club, during which time he was a mainstay of Struth's squad. Symon racked up over 250 unofficial performances for the club and plenty of silverware along the way.

GLASGOW NORTH EASTERN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION GOLD MEDAL 1888/89,awarded to Mick McKeown of Celtic F.C., the obverse monogrammed 'J.W' to a shield shaped cartouche below a purple coloured stone, the reverse inscribed 'Won by Celtic F.C M. McKeown 1888-89', marked 'DO(?)', 4.3cm including bale, 11.8gNote: A scarce and important piece, this is one of the very earliest medals awarded to one of the very earliest Celtic players.Mick McKeon began his career at Celtic after he was lured from Hibernian in 1888.The Ayrshire-born left-back played his competitive debut for Celtic in the 5-1 Scottish Cup victory over Shettleston on September 1st 1888. He was also to play for the side in their first ever final, the Glasgow Exhibition Cup final, which Celtic lost 2-0 to Cowlairs, then regarded as a shock result.Capped by Scotland, McKeown was a fine and much sought after talent but he was also an outspoken and fiery character who was only too happy to offer his considerable skills to the highest bidder.During his stay at Parkhead he made it be known that if Celtic weren’t prepared to recognise his worth then he would be on the move. It was rumoured that during one such discussion McKeown was so incensed by the club’s offer to him he struck club secretary John O’Hara. In many ways, possibly the first true modern player by attitude alone. He had several fallouts with other key players and officials and at one time declared to the press he was leaving Celtic to play for the breakaway Glasgow Hibernian, and was even offered captaincy of the new club. The majority of those at Celtic thankfully were against any such idea of following the Edinburgh club’s policy and it has been a proud statement of Celtic’s to support or employ any man regardless of their creed, despite the actions of those who wanted to thwart it.Celtic refused to release his kit and he was to remain with the Bhoys after his issues were resolved. In August 1891 McKeown did finally depart Celtic Park when he moved to England and Blackburn Rovers. He was soon back at Celtic, but playing in a friendly v Celtic for Blackburn Rovers, with Celtic winning 3-2.That move proved to be the beginning of the end for the player. A heavy drinker, his problems with alcohol worsened and his stay in Lancashire lasted less than a year. He returned to Scotland and had brief and unsuccessful spells at a number of minor clubs. He had became a rather poor sight, living day to day dependent on charity & handouts. He was also a regular at court for various frequent drink related misdemeanours. A spell in the army lasted less than a year when he was dismissed and described as being “worthless”.Michael McKeown died on October 25th 1903 aged just 33. His body was found lying in a lime kiln just a short stroll away from Celtic Park in Camlachie. He had died from asphyxiation.A pauper’s grave awaited the former Scotland star but Celtic did not forget their former player despite past run-ins. Celtic did the decent thing and arranged the funeral and burial to give him at least an honourable send-off.It was a sad end for the player, and a bleak warning to others. Football may have given the opportunity to the few to escape the drudgery of other lines they may have been driven into (such as working down the pits) but some mishandled the chance or couldn’t live up to it. It was to be a story that would repeat itself too often in the history of football even to today.

HANS J. WEGNER (Tønder, Denmark, 1914 - 2007).Set of six PP52 chairs.Oak wood frame, with cognac coloured leather upholstered seat.Measurements: 72 x 58 x 50 cm.This is one of the Round Chair models designed by Hans J. Wegner, specifically the PP52 chair. Like the author's emblematic PP501 chair, the PP52 combines craftsmanship and modernity in an exceptional way. Wegner presents a chair that values natural beauty, beautiful grain and flowing lines, whose geometric expressiveness is tempered by gentle curves.Hans J. Wegner was a leading figure in furniture design, whose ideas contributed to the international popularity of Danish design in the mid-20th century. His work belongs to the modern school, characterised by a special emphasis on functionality. He began his training at a very young age, as an apprentice to the cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg. He soon discovered a special taste for the use of wood, and his work in the cabinetmaker's workshop enabled him to experiment with different types and designs. At the age of seventeen he completed his apprenticeship, although he remained in the workshop for a further three years until he entered the army. After his military service he entered a technical school and then the Danmarks Designskole, where he was taught by O. Mølgaard Nielsen, and the Academy of Architecture in Copenhagen. In the Danish capital he came into contact with the Furniture Exhibitions of the Carpenters' Guild, where he began to show his creations in 1927. During these years Wegner collaborated with master cabinetmakers such as J. Hansen, L. Pontoppidan, N. Vodder, J. Kjaer, A. J. Iversen, Moos and R. Rasmussen, and also with the most prominent Danish architects of the time, among them K. Klint, V. Lauritzen. O. Wanscher and M. Voltelen. The annual exhibitions would give the young cabinetmaker experience of what could be achieved with the combination of design and craftsmanship, which led him to devote himself fully to design. Already in his first pieces, Wegner showed his interest in the concept of "stripping old chairs of their outer style and showing them in their pure structure". Throughout his career, this designer was awarded prizes such as the Lunning Prize in 1951, the Grand Prix de Milan at the Milan Triennale of the same year, the Prince Eugene Medal in Sweden and the Danish Exkersberg Medal. In 1959 he was appointed honorary royal designer for industry by the Royal Society of Arts in London. Today, his designs can be found in collections such as those of the MoMA in New York and Die Neue Samlung in Munich.

Lot 116

BØRGE MOGENSEN (Denmark, 1914 - 1972).Pair of armchairs model 2207. Edition of the 70s-80s.Teak frame and black leather upholstery. This pair of armchairs, still in production, is currently worth 8000 € in shop.Measurements: 78 x 70 x 80 cm.The sofas designed by Børge Mogensen were originally intended to furnish his own home, but soon became an icon of 20th century design. The generous proportions and cushions upholstered in fabric or leather provide exceptional comfort for the user. The armrests, meanwhile, featured a distinctive shape, characteristic of the 22 collection, reflected in a slight curve, higher at the back and giving the sofa a modern, timeless appearance. The seat, back and side cushions are completely detachable from the frame.Børge Mogensen was one of the most prominent representatives of the generation of designers who gave birth to the Danish design concept that is now known all over the world. He began his career as a cabinetmaker in 1934, and two years later began his studies at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he was taught by Kaare Klint. He then entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, graduating as an architect in 1942. In the same year he began working as design director for FDB, before finally setting up on his own in 1950. Functional is the word that best describes Mogensen's design; most of his creations were conceived for industrial production, and are characterised by solid, simple lines, almost scientifically studied to be as functional as possible. His clean and highly functional aesthetic resulted in affordable and practical designs, his favourite material being wood. His client portfolio includes Fredericia Stolefabrik, Fritz Hansen and Søborg Møbelfabrik, among others. Notable projects include Spokeback Sofa (1945) and Spanish Chair (1959), as well as a variety of shelving and storage designs. He was honoured with the Eckersberg Medal in 1950, the annual prize of the Copenhagen Joinery Guild in 1953 and the C.F. Hansen Medal in 1972.

The entire structure is supported by a metal cylinder whose simplicity reinforces the formal purity of the rest of the piece.Founded in Milan in 1946 by the designer Bruno Gatta, Stilnovo immediately attracted the attention of the Milanese art scene, as evidenced by a review in Gio Ponti's Domus magazine, the silver medal at the 10th Triennale in 1954 and the Compasso d'Oro award for the Braccio lamp in 1955. Thanks to the collaboration with designers of the stature of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Joe Colombo and Gae Aulenti, to name but a few, the company produces lamps that have entered the Olympus of design icons. New solutions, innovative materials and cutting-edge technology make Stilnovo a point of reference for designers and lovers of timeless design.

Lot 67

GASPAR HOMAR MEZQUIDA (Bunyola, Mallorca, 1870 - Barcelona, 1953).Pair of modernist chairs, ca. 1900.Mahogany wood with marquetry, carving and gilding.Measurements: 103 x 42 x 45 cm.Pair of modernist chairs of great richness, a design by Gaspar Homar that combines classical and modernist lines and different techniques and decorative styles. The structure is light and stylised, with eminently straight lines, with four square-section legs that are narrower towards the base, to visually lighten the design. The waist of the chairs takes on a special relevance, as it is decorated with naturalistic vegetal motifs carved in relief on a nuanced, golden background, which enhances its volume. In addition, the front of the waistband has a trilobate cut-out, with the corners decorated with trilobate leaves of neo-Gothic heritage, typical of Homar's production. On the back, which is open and has a central spade, we see similar carvings on a gilt background on the crest, with a sinuous profile and a soft, typically modernist appearance. However, the style and decorative technique are different on the back. We see a floral composition made in classic marquetry in light tones on a background of beautiful and expressive root veining, and at the base of this panel are two rosettes carved in relief, whose naturalism contrasts with the more synthesised and geometric language of the flowers in the marquetry.A modernist cabinetmaker and decorator, Gaspar Homar began his training at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona and then furthered his knowledge in the workshop of the cabinetmaker Francesc Vidal, who had also been his father's teacher. In 1893, just ten years later, they both opened their own establishment in Barcelona, under the name of P. Homar e Hijo. Two years later his father died, leaving Gaspar in charge of the workshop. Throughout his fruitful career he took part in exhibitions in London, Madrid, Barcelona, Saragossa and Paris, and was a member of the jury of the 1908 Venice International. Homar began his style within the neo-Gothic trend but soon specialised in Modernisme, a style in which he produced his best works until 1918, later devoting himself to the production of conventional furniture. During these years he collaborated with Sebastià Junyent, Joan Carreres and Josep Pey Farriol in the design of furniture and complete rooms, with an exquisite richness of design, figurative marquetry in soffits and furniture which are his hallmark, etc. He incorporated exotic woods such as sycamore, banana, mahogany and rosewood. His production of ornamental furniture (chests, umbrella stands, etc.) as well as beds, wardrobes and chairs was well known. His best known works are the complete decoration of the Lleó-Morera (1904), Navàs and Burés houses, as well as several buildings by Gaudí and Doménech i Montaner. He also won, among other awards, the Grand Prize for Furniture and Decoration at the London Exhibition of 1907, the Grand Prize, Gold Medal and Grand Cup at the Esposizione Internazionale Industria-Lavoro Arte Decorativa in Venice (1908) and the Grand Prize at the Exposition Internationale de Confort Moderne in Paris in 1909. Today, pieces of furniture by Gaspar Homar are kept in the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Museo de Art Nouveau y Art Déco Casa Lis in Salamanca and the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid, among others.

AGAPIT VALLMITJANA I ABARCA (Barcelona, 1850 - 1915)."Lion Hunter or The African", ha. 1882-1883.Terracotta.Signed.Size: 63 x 45 x 40 cm.Smaller version of the work "The Lion Hunter" made by Agapit Vallmitjana in 1883, currently located in the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona. Made of marble and commissioned by the City Council, in 1884 the sculpture won a medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid. Vallmitjana specialised in making sculptures representing animals, such as the lions on the main staircase of the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia and those on the monument to Columbus in Barcelona. The son of the sculptor Venanci Vallmitjana i Barbany, who was also a disciple of his at the Llotja School in Barcelona, Agapit Vallmitjana began his activity in 1883 when he opened a workshop with his father, where he also exhibited his works. He later combined his artistic activity with teaching, which he did from 1902 at La Llotja. He was known above all for his work in the animalistic genre, having produced numerous sculptural groups featuring wild animals, especially lions. He made a name for himself at the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, being awarded third and second class medals in the 1884 and 1908 editions. He is currently represented in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid, the Diocesan Museum of Barcelona and the Palace of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and has public monuments in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia.

The Korium chair is a design classic that will be enjoyed by generations to come. Designed by Tito Agnoli in the 1970s, it was marketed by Matteo Grassi in the same decade. It is a chair raised on four wheels, with slightly curved armrests and side frames covered by a black leather panel that falls to the floor. The backrest is slightly inclined. He studied painting under Mario Sironi. In 1949 he enrolled at the Polytechnic University of Milan to study architecture. Specialising in industrial design, Agnoli interned for the famous designers Gio Ponti and Carlo De Carli after graduating. From the 1950s onwards, Agnoli worked in the field of furniture, creating designs for important Italian brands such as Arflex, Bonacina, Mattero Grassi, Poltrona Frau and Ycami. He also made major contributions to the field of lighting. Among his most outstanding designs are the Model 9000 Sofa for Arflex (1969); the sculptural Lounge Chair P3 and Lounge Chair P3S in wicker, the Sorbet Chair in stainless steel and the Punto e Virgola Chair for Pierantonio Bonacina (all 1960s); and the Korium Chair for Matteo Grassi (1970s). In 1974, Agnoli began collaborating with Poltrona Frau, designing numerous leather sofas and armchairs that were a great commercial success. His prestige was enhanced by a double nomination for the Compasso d'Oro award and he won a gold medal at the Neocon exhibition in Chicago in 1986.
