A World War II British Empire Medal group to Quartermaster Angus William Dewar MacDonald, R102229, comprising B.E.M, 1939-45 star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Burma Star and War Medal, served aboard Ellerman Liner City of Cairo; sold with a collection P.O.W. photographs from Milag Nord camp, other photographs, letters and ephemera including Record Office dockets, passes, discharge documents, newspaper cuttings, BBC receipts for MacDonald reading 'Ordeal' - a 60 minute adaptation of the story, dated May 1954; and a copy of GIBSON (C), THE SHIP WITH FIVE NAMES, where MacDonald's experiences are recorded. The City of Cairo left Bombay bound for home on October 2nd 1942. On November 6th she was torpedoed by a submarine and MacDonald took command of lifeboat 4 which sank while entering the water after a second torpedo struck the ship and MacDonald swam to lifeboat 1. After 36 days adrift 51 of the original survivors died leaving three, MacDonald, Diana Jarman and Jack Edmead who were picked up by the German runner Rhakotis. However, on New Years day 1943 the Rhakotis was attacked by HMS Scylla and sunk. MacDonald was picked up by U-410 and spent the remainder of the war at Milag.
WHITCHURCH INTEREST: A silver gilt members badge for the London Pitt Club, named verso for George Corser Esq, with 'Tassie' type cameo of Pitt, Morocco leather case with label for Green, Ward & green, Ludgate Hill; with original postmarked letter from The Pitt Club dated 27th January 1815 to George Corser (1755-1835), Whitchurch. The London Badge was issued to members at £1 16s 6d. Rule 10 of the London Club reads: " That each member shall wear, at all the meetings of the Club, the Pitt Medal, tied on his left breast with a garter blue ribbon, and that the larger Medal, with a wider ribbon, be worn by the Chairman of the day." The first dinner for the London Club was held at Merchant Taylors Hall in 1808. On this night 613 bottles of port and 429 bottles of sherry were drunk at a price of £282 and 13 shillings, not surprising then that £20, 7s and 6d was charged for glass and china breakages!

All with certificates of authenticity, unframed.
Canada. 1885. North West Canada Medal with ribbon. Extremely Fine+. This medal was presented to the soldiers who took part in the suppression of Riel's Rebellion of 1885, who fought in one or all of the main encounters during the rebellion. These battles took place along the Saskatchewan River at Fish Creek, Batoche, Cut Knife and Frenchman's Butte. 920 of these medals were authorized for issue to members of the NWMP (North West Mounted Police), although they were originally to be excluded; medals later issued to the NWMP were engraved with the recipients name. This particular medal is engraved to "PVT THOS CAMBRIDGE SR. F. CO MID. BATT" (First Column, Midland Battalion) in edge lettering. The obverse of the medal features a diademed and veiled effigy of the Queen Victoria, facing left, with the legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX; the reverse legend reads NORTH WEST / 1885 / CANADA in three lines within a wreath of maple leaves. The attached ribbon is a rich slate blue with red stripes and is in pristine condition; the medal shows some evidence of light cleaning, but is otherwise very attractive, with light bronze toning.

Ancient Roman Imperial Coins - Giovanni Cavino - Italian Renaissance 'Paduan' Medallion of Otho 16th century AD or a little later; a struck medallion or 'sestertius', probably an early strike, by/after Giovanni Cavino (1500-1570) of Padua. Obv: profile bust of Otho right with IMP OTHO CAES AVG P M COS II legend. Rev: nude helmeted Mars (?) right with shield and sword advancing towards altar and captive nude figure bound to palm tree left; supine nude male figure below; S-C at sides; die-linked in a series to a portrait medal depicting Achille Bocchi[us] (1488-1562) of Bologna, Italy. 46.40 grams, 41.45mm. This medallion is die-linked by the obverse to a MATVRA CELERITAS reverse and further die-linked by that reverse to an obverse with ACH BOCCHIVS BONONIENSIS HISTORIAE CONDITOR legend and a profile portrait (see printout showing the three medallions compared); Bocchi[us] was a teacher of law in Bologna and author of Symbolicarum Quaestionum de Universo Genere, published from 1555 and resided at Palazzo Bocchi from about 1555; he was a contemporary of Cavino. Good very fine; pierced at top. Rare.
