David Cornwell - John Le Carré - is considered to be one the most important writers of the post-war era, with an impressive list of publications in the spy genre. Since the 1960s, his tales of espionage have entertained audiences internationally. Le Carré is famous as the creator of George Smiley and the author of Cold War spy novels such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - filmed once for television with Sir Alex Guinness and more recently for cinema with Gary Oldman in the lead role - which defined the form. Since the 1990s he has increasingly been regarded as one of the great English language novelists of the modern period, and a caustic chronicler and critic of British political morality. He declined honours and literary prizes from the UK with vehemence, saying a writer should remain on the outside looking in, but was awarded almost in spite of himself the Goethe Medal, the Légion des Arts et des Lettres and the Olof Palme Prize. We are delighted to be offering this desk and chest of drawers which were used by Le Carré from the end of 2009 until his death in 2020. They were acquired from his friend of almost fifty years, Gerald Moran, and were used in his workspace in London for the creation of all of his final novels. On this desk, he wrote A Delicate Truth (2013), A Legacy of Spies (2017, the companion volume to The Spy Who Came In From The Cold), Agent Running In The Field (2019), and Silverview (published posthumously in 2021). He also wrote his memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel (2016), at this desk. Within the elegant drawers of the chest, Le Carré safely stored his manuscripts during the editing process. These finely crafted pieces of furniture therefore represent an important piece of literary history: it was where Le Carré transported his stories from pen to paper, and where the journeys of his novels first took shape. The pieces were designed by Chi Wing Lo, a prominent architect and designer who has been shaping the direction of furniture at Giorgetti since 1996, and whose work achieves a timelessness that has led to him achieving international acclaim. The ‘Eos’ line at Giorgetti represents Chi Wing Lo’s refined taste and exquisite craftmanship, with elegant lines and a smooth sense of motion that produces an overall impression of reflection that would be the perfect place to put pen to paper. Le Carré will also have worked on his final and still-unpublished project, The George Smiley Years, upon this desk and chest of drawers.

WW2 NZ Airforce gallantry medal miniature group of 7 to Flight Lieutenant Malcolm Robert Head N.Z.413414 to include Distinguished Service Order (DSO), Distinguished Flying Cross, 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star with France and Germany clasp, Defence Medal, 1939-45 medal with Mentioned in Dispatches oak leaf and New Zealand War Service Medal together with citations, log book accounts and London Gazette issue (7) NOTE: Flying Officer Head was posted to No 9 Squadron on 15th May 1943 and at once showed by his enthusiasm for operations against the enemy that he would prove a valuable addition to the Squadron. Up to 14th July 1943 he had completed 12 successful sorties against heavily defended German targets, on night of the 29th and 30th May 1943 he was subject to accurate fire from heavy flack between Cologne and Dusseldorf, the aircraft being hit in a number of places. He had throughout his tour exhibited an offensive and determined spirit, and both on the ground and in the air had instilled the spirit into other members of his crew. He had exhibited all the qualities of a good Captain, and for this reason was specially selected on 14th July 1943 for the attack on the small target of Reggio in Italy. Over the target he was involved in a collision with another aircraft sustaining such extensive damage to his aircraft that he was compelled to give the order to abandon. On reaching the ground he was captured but was determined to escape from the enemy at the first opportunity, thus maintaining the same spirit shown in carrying out his operational duties. His final escape was characteristic of all previous service and after several brushes with the enemy, during one of which he received a broken arm from small arms wound dated 5th April 1944 he was recommended immediately for a Distinguished Service Order. 22nd September 1944 recommendation for Distinguished Flying Cross. Since being awarded the DSO Flight Lieutenant Head completed 25 successful sorties as pilot and captain of Lancaster aircraft. He was a most outstanding operational pilot and set an example worth of immitation by all. Not once did he fail to complete a sortie for which he was detailed and invariably pressed home his attacks despite the defences of the targets or the nature of weather conditions encountered. On two occasions during the attacks on Russelheim and Alnoye on 12th August 1944 and 8th July 1944 his aircraft was attacked by night fighters but his manoeuvres were so skilful that his gunners were able to engage and destroy the fighters without damage being done to the aircraft, because of this he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in recognition of a fine record of sustained operational flying dated 22nd September 1944. The lot is provided with a substantial amount of copied research, including the DSO and DFC citations and the list of missions undertaken.

The commissions for the various First World War iron jewels and medals were given by the Reichsbank. A gift of 5 marks' worth of gold entitled the giver to a medal. The makers of the watch chain, Klein & Quenzer, were specialist jewellery and watch-chain manufacturers working in non-precious metals.]
