UNIFORM AND RELIC GROUPING OF A LEDO ROAD C.B.I. VETERAN World War II uniform, map, medals and 'blood chit' grouping of Lt. Robert Finkel, 181st Signal Repair Co., 4011 Signal Battalion, which was crucial in the operation of the important Ledo Road. The Ledo Road was an all-weather overland route between India and China, built during World War II to enable the Allies to deliver supplies to China, after the Japanese cut off the Burma Road in 1942. Of the 1,726 kilometres long road, 1,033 kilometres are in Burma and 632 kilometres in China with the remainder in India. The road was constructed in record time during the autumn of 1943. Included in this grouping is: Finkel's dress uniform jacket and garrison cap, silver wire sewn-in Signal Corps and U.S. insignia, theater-made cloth and wire C.B.I. patch on left shoulder, and a very rare Ledo Road theater-made cloth shoulder patch on right; a special wall hanging medal plaque with five medals with four ribbons, lieutenant's bar, and Meritorious Service ribbon, including U.S. China War Memorial Medal (numbered), American Campaign Medal, Asian-Pacific Campaign medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. The plaque with an engraved plate citing Finkel's war service record; a lucite tablet encasing Finkel's chest ribbons, second lieutenant's bar and Signal Corps insignia; and Finkel's 'blood chit', 10.5 x 8.75, silk multi-part construction displaying flags of USA and the Republic of China, along with with C.B.I. insignia and handwritten text in Chinese: 'Americans who came to China to help win the war soldiers and civilians united together to save and protect. 34th year of Republic of China', on a wooden plaque with perspex cover. Of particular interest is a blueprint map of the Ledo Road, from Kunming (China) to Ledo (India) through Burma, 31 x 17 in., signed 'Lt. Finkel' at lower right, annotated with gas depots at Waingmow and Mangshih, stamped 'SECRET' in two places. Mounted, a closed, clean tear from left margin, else very good. Robert Finkel enlisted in the Army Signal Corps in Los Angeles in April 1942, and was sent to the South Asian Theater after training. In late 1944 he joined the 4011th Signal battalion. He saw action in the field from January to September 1945, was promoted to Second Lieutenant, and received a Unit Citation and two Bronze Battle Stars. After the war back in Los Angeles, he had a career as a TV producer and director, including The Eddie Fisher Show, Bob Newhart Show, Andy Williams Show, and many more, and famously produced a TV comeback concert for Elvis Presley in 1968.

BATTLE-BURNED IRON CROSS RECOVERED IN A BUNKER, JUNE 10, 1944 A fabulous relic taken from a German bunker only four days after the June 6, 1944 landings on Omaha Beach, a 1939 Iron Cross, 2nd Class that has been heavily damaged by fire, most likely from an American flamethrower or a fire resulting from sea-borne artillery. The paint on the medal is bubbled from the heat, and the silver frame has been blackened. The reverse of the right arm is actually fractured from the heat. A crudely written note, probably contemporary, accompanies the medal. It reads: 'Iron Cross found in bunker at Normandie June 10 44' This piece was included in a collection of relics recovered 'around Omaha Beach' in 1978, which may point to its origin.

BRITISH FASCISTS PIN AND EPHEMERA A fine assemblage of material from the British fascist organizations, includes a rare numbered pin issued to members of the Imperial Fascist League, a British fascist political movement founded by Arnold Leese in 1929 after he broke away from the British Fascists. It included a blackshirted paramilitary arm called the Fascists Legion, modeled after the Italian Fascists. The group espoused antisemitism and the dominance of the 'Aryan race' in a 'Racial Fascist Corporate State', especially after Leese met Nazi Party propagandist Julius Streicher, the virulently racist publisher of Der Stürmer; the group later indirectly received funding from the Nazis. Although it had only between 150 and 500 members at maximum, its public profile was higher than its membership numbers would indicate. The pin is 1 in. in diameter, polished steel with black enameled face, bearing the 'F' emblem and a cross within a flower, surrounded by the motto: 'For King and Country'. The reverse bears a pin and catch, with membership number '36936' and maker's mark from 'Birmingham Medal Co.' Sold with ten pieces of propaganda issued by the Union of Fascists (B.U.F.), a British fascist political party formed in 1932 by Oswald Mosley. Mosley changed its name to the British Union of Fascists and National Socialists in 1936 and, in 1937, to the British Union. In 1939, following the start of the Second World War, the party was proscribed by the British government and in 1940 it was disbanded. The pieces, set in a frame, include 'The Fascist's Motto', 'The Labour-Communist Double-Cross', an anti-BBC text, etc. Overall very good.

Brass bust of Winston Churchill, 3.5 x 5 in., weighing 7 lbs. Atop a brass base, Churchill is featured in a suit and tie with his Order of Merit medal hanging from his neck, and a cigar clamped in his mouth. No maker mark is present. Signs of chipping behind the right ear and oxidation at the base, else very good. This lot includes a Jan. 25, 1965 article, 4pp. 15 x 23 in., from the ‘Houston Chronicle’ titled ‘Churchill Memorial Section’, issued following Churchill’s death; WITH a Churchill- related reproduction poster, 22 x 23 in., reading: ‘Better Pot-Luck With Churchill Today Than Humble Pie With Hitler Tomorrow – Don’t Waste Food!’, mounted to white poster board. The poster depicts a caricature of the head of Churchill smoking a cigar as a lidded casserole dish at the top left, and a caricature of the head of Hitler as a pot complete with a saluting arm as the handle at the bottom right. Spotting throughout and several tears at the bottom margin.

WORLD WAR I IRON CROSSES AND INSIGNIA Pair of German World War I Iron Crosses and other insignia. The first example is in good condition, unmarked, in about average condition and still exhibiting good detail. The second example is on a parade mount. It bears substantial damage to the ribbed beading about the black painted section, having been crushed and in a few places, it is pulling away from the body of the medal. Also present is a chest ribbon with ribbon for the Iron Cross and the Hindenburg Cross with Swords. Finally, there is a Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Medal, also known as the Centenary Medal. It was established on March 22, 1897 by Wilhelm II on the occasion of the 100th birthday of his grandfather, Emperor Wilhelm I. Four pieces.

GEORGE MCCLELLAN, LOUIS BLENKER AND JULIUS STAHEL Fine war-date D.S. signed by three prominent Union generals. The document opens with a D.S. by JULIUS STAHEL (1825-1912), Union major general who commanded cavalry in West Virginia, awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallantry at Piedmont. In the 2pp. legal folio document, written at Hunters Chapel, Nov. 24, 1861, Stahel sends a recommendation to N.Y. Gov. Edward D. Morgan, in part: '...Having been promoted by an act of the President...I recommend to your favorable consideration as my successor to the colonelcy of the 8th N.Y. St. Vol. Lieut Colonel Francis Wutschel and to the Lieutenant Colonelcy...Major C. B. Hedterich...' Just beneath appears a signed endorsement by LOUIS BLENKER (1812-1863), Union brigadier general whose regiment covered the Union retreat at Bull Run, later leading three German brigades under McClellan. Died of injuries from a fall from his horse. Blenker concurs with Stahel's recommendations. On the verso of the blank second page appears an A.E.S. of Major Gen. GEORGE B. MCCLELLAN (1826-1885), Union major general and general-in-chief of the army later sacked by Lincoln. McClellan writes from Washington on Nov. 28, 1861: 'Respectfully forwarded to his Excellency the Gov. of NY with the hope that it may meet his favorable consideration...' Very good. Wutschel would receive his promotion and lead the 8th New York. It participated in the pursuit of Gen. Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley, and as part of Blenker's division fought at the battles of Cross Keys and New Market. In the battle of Cross Keys its killed, wounded and missing numbered 220 out of a total of 550 engaged.

Rufus Saxton, a lengthy explanation of the non-payment for the picking of cotton. Endorsed on the verso by RUFUS SAXTON (1824-1908) Union brigadier general, Medal of Honor recipient, after the war served as the Freedmen's Bureau's first assistant commissioner. Countersigned by THOMAS W. SHERMAN, (1813-1879) Union brigadier general, appointed to brevet major general in the last year of the war for his distinguished service while fighting in Port Royal, Corinth, and Port Hudson. Mailing folds, light foxing, else fine.

GEORGE A. DAVIS (1920 - 1952) Highly decorated USAF fighter pilot and flying ace of World War II and the Korean War. Davis rose to the rank of major, and was promoted posthumously to lieutenant colonel and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in 'MiG Alley' during the latter war. He was the only flying ace of the United States to be killed in action in Korea. Rare first day postal cover honoring the U.S. Army, Washington, Sep. 28, 1945, signed across the face adding: 'USAF'. Fine.

In 1948 he took part in the founding of the group Dau al Set, together with Brossa, Ponç, Tàpies and Tharrats, among others. Concerned with the plastic value of the sign, his work has from the outset a strong kinship with surrealism, as well as a great sensitivity towards the expressive power of colour. Towards 1955 he immersed himself in material informalism, which led him to use "grattage" in works with a certain orientalist flavour. In 1959 he won first prize at the São Paulo Biennial and exhibited at the Documenta in Kassel, and the following year he took part in an exhibition of Spanish avant-garde works at the Tate Gallery in London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Cuixart introduced collage into his work in 1962, which gradually led him towards pop art. Enriched by all these experiences, he returned to flat painting, achieving a very personal critical realism, which synthesises expressionism with dramatically transformed figuration, always valuing chromatic qualities. In the seventies he exhibited in numerous national and international capitals, such as Paris, Madrid, São Paulo, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Basel, Barcelona and Milan, among others. In the following decade, Cuixart gradually freed his painting from its aggressive aspects to give it a more lyrical tone. He also took part in a group exhibition at the Palais de l'UNESCO in Paris, and was awarded the Cross of Saint George by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Cross of Isabella the Catholic. In 1988 he holds an anthological exhibition in Japan, in the cities of Kobe and Tokyo. He continues to work with exuberant colours and forms, and reincorporates a more material figuration into his work. In 1998 the foundation named after him was created in Palafrugell, and the following year he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture. Self-taught, he had been in contact with many artistic and cultural groups during his youth, in fact his signature is included in the logicofobist manifesto or in the writing, "De la Revolución Surrealista al Surrealismo al Servicio de la Revolución" (From the Surrealist Revolution to Surrealism in the Service of the Revolution). However, it was not until 1958 that he began to develop a truly personal style, while at the same time joining the avant-garde pictorial group El Paso, to which Antonio Saura, Rafael Canogar, Luis Feito and Manolo Millares, among others, belonged. He began to express himself through abstract painting with a strong expressionist character and great attention to colour. He definitively left behind the figuration that had prevailed until then in his work. Throughout his life he was awarded numerous prizes, such as the Condado de San Jorge Prize, the Lissones Prize (Milan) and the Gold Medal of the City of Saragossa. He exhibited in the most important galleries in Spain and also abroad, in cities such as Oslo, New York, Venice, São Paulo and Houston. JAUME PLENSA (Barcelona, 1955).Untitled, 1987.Aquatint etching on copper plate, copy 4/50.Signed and justified in pencil.Size: 18 x 18 cm (print); 50 x 37,5 cm (paper).Jaume Plensa studied at the Llotja School and the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts, both in Barcelona. He excelled in sculpture, drawing and engraving. His work focuses on the relationship between man and his environment, often questioning the role of art in society and the position of the artist. He currently lives in Paris, and was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Plensa began his career working with wrought iron mixed with polyester. Between 1983 and 1984 he began to mould iron using the casting technique, and developed a sculptural concept based on zoomorphic elements. His work gradually evolved, and he is now considered a precursor of Spanish neo-expressionism. In the nineties he introduced modifications in his work in both material and formal terms, and began to use different materials such as metal scraps, polyester and resins. During these years he produced series of walls, doors and architectural constructions, seeking to give space an absolute protagonist role. Between 1999 and 2003 Plensa became one of the pillars of world scenography, reinterpreting four classical operas by Falla, Debussy, Berlioz and Mozart with "La Fura dels Baus", and alone in a contemporary theatrical production, "La pareti della solitudine", by Ben Jelloun. He has held solo and group exhibitions all over the world, including a retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2000. In June 2008 he unveiled his work "Breathing", a memorial to journalists killed in the line of duty, at the BBC headquarters in London. Throughout his career he has received numerous distinctions, such as the Medal of the Knights of Arts and Letters in 1993, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, and the National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1997, awarded by the Generalitat of Catalonia. Considered one of the leading representatives of the new Spanish art of expressionist tendency, his work is present in the best national and international galleries and art fairs, as well as in the main museums of Europe and the United States, such as the MoMA in New York, the Kemper in Kansas, the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the Palazzo Forti in Verona, the MACBA and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
