A CASED BOER WAR MEDALLION. A cased Boer War 1899-1900 dated medallion, The Transvaal Souvenier 1899-1900. Fenwick Del designer, Soldier and a Sailor each side of a Flag, with The Queen God Bless Her, below. The reverse has Shields with Unified In The Cause of Freedom, We Defend Our Empire above in a scroll, we serve under One crown. The round cardboard case has a label inset in the inner lid. Vice Regal Lodge Dublin. April 25th 1900. 'Sir, I am desired by the Queen to thank you for the Gold Medal Commemorative of The Boer War, which you have been good enough to offer for presentation, to Her Majesty. The Queen is much pleased with the design and the execution of the medal. Yours Faithfully Arthur Bigge. Arthur Bigge was Private Secretary to the Sovereign 1895-1901. July 1916 Captain Wiltshire Regt attached 13th Battalion Durham LI.

A Death Plaque in card case of issue, named to Joseph Arthur Houghton. The elder brother of Pte A E Houghton see earlier lot, aged 28 he was Killed in Action 17/8/1917. At the time he was No 5212 Pte J A Houghton serving in the 7th Battalion Leinster Regiment. Buried in Ypres Town Cemetery Extension, Reg 111 G.22. The medal package is addressed to his Mother Mrs A Houghton, 4 Peckham Street, Bury St Edmunds MIC confirms pair only issued.

A cased Air Force Cross with top mount and original award slip, addressed to Flt Lt John W Hawke AFC, 1939/45, Atlantic & Africa Stars, Defence & War Medals. A General Service Medal named to Flt Lt J W Hawke RAF. John W Hawke (54274) was a War Substantive Flt Lt (Engineer) with seniority from the 28/7/1944. His award of the AFC appeared in the London Gazette on the 13th June 1946 An original photograph with him wearing his tropical kit and ribbon bars confirming his awards, also an Engineers Wing. An original photograph of Squadron Leader Hawke on his wedding day, he retired from the RAF (Intelligence) in October 1954 With a mounted Miniature Medal group, for the above awards the GSM lacking a bar. Lt 15/3/1950 Capt 5/3/1955 Major 5/3/1962 Shown as still serving in 1972. The Medals are mounted for wear and have a matching miniature group, also mounted for wear.
A ROYAL IRISH REGT - MILITARY FOOT POLICE TRIO. A 1914 Star named to 5-2842 L/Cpl M Kirrane R Ir Regt. British War and Victory Medals named to 2842--M Kirrane R.Ir.Regt. Lance Corporal Kirrane returned his Star in a naming error (Kirram) and was sent a correct one in May 1921. He was then sent his pair which had the wrong rank on them, he etched out the rank of Pte. One suspects he possibly gave up on His Majesty's Medal naming service. He was also by then serving with The Military Foot Police. under number P10786. He served with the Royal Irish Regiment in Theatre 2A (Serbia-Macedonia-Gallipoli) from the 8th July 1915. His MIC shows the revised award naming, he endured on the double entry indexes.
A HIGHLAND SOCIETY MEDAL IN SILVER 1801. A Highland Society medal for the Egypt Campaign of 1801, under General Sir Ralph Abercromby. He commanded the landings at Aboukir Bay in March 1801 against strong French opposition. On the night of the 21st march the French made a surprise attack on the British Camp, General mAbercromby was hit by a ricochet and died aboard the Flagship, seven days later. Silver awards were mainly to senior officers and those who distinguished themselves in the Campaign. This example is unnamed as issued, with the Highland Society London around the rim. Gilbert Grace Feeney served in France from the 5th February 1917 as a 2/Lt then later as a Captain (T/Major). 2/Lt 19th January 1917 Lt 12th May 1918 Capt 19th July 1918. Rtd 1920 When he applied for his Medals his address was given as the The Divisional Surveyors Office, Bunmow, Essex. A boxed British War Medal awarded to Payr.S.Lt P Bunting R N V R. (Percy) At some time in 1918 he was attached to the Royal air Force (Temporary) Awarded a BWM only under Spec 176, he is on a 1923 list for a LSGC medal, though this is not confirmed. (3) He served on HMS President until being Demobilised in 1919.

Serving in France from 18th May 1915, later as a Sjt in the Machine Gun Corps, later still as a Sjt attached the Kings African Rifles. His sons WW11 group of three medals, all unnamed as issued. 1939/45 & Africa Stars, War Medal. Able Seaman CJX335709 James Frederick Law born C1923, the son of James and Evelyn Florence Law of Peckham London. Killed in Action serving on SS Benalbarach sunk off Algiers January 7th 1943, with the loss of 410 lives. The younger son of James and Evelyn Law born in 1927, joined the Royal navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1942. Awarded the 1939/45 Star, Atlantic & Burma Stars, the latter with Pacific bar. Photocopied details of Frank Lionel Law's Naval service 1942-47 are with the group.
A GT WAR TRIO TO THE KINGS OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS. A 1914/15 Star, British War & Victory Medals in envelopes and boxes of issue named to 16062 Pte R Roughsedge K O Sco Bord. Robert Roughsedge served with the 8th Battalion KOSB in France from the 10th July 1915. The medal envelopes are addressed to Mr R Roughsedge, 5 Egerton Grove, Stratford Road, Hulme, Manchester. He was awarded a Silver War Badge List D/85 and discharged from service, under order (392) 28th April 1916.
A BUCKINGHAMSHIRE YEOMANRY QSA WITH THREE BARS. A Queens South Africa Medal with bars Cape Colony-South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. Named to 25246 Cpl E Smeeton 38th Coy Imp Yeo. (High Wycombe) Part of the 10th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, the Bucks Yeomanry sent two contingents of 120 men at a time. A L/Cpl E Smeaton is listed as being accidentally wounded in the action at Wonderfontein 11th June 1901. On this day the Company had Pte Lucas KIA, L Sjt Gillham Wounded (Since Died). Privates Povey & Britwell slightly wounded, also Pte Healy injured.
AN UNNAMED INDIA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1854 bar SIKKIM 1888. An 1854 issue India General Service Medal with bar Sikkim 1888. Issued unnamed (not erased), the bar having official rivetted fixings. The medal nicely toned, with no signs of wear. With it a Silver Army Temperance Medal with Victorian crown, damaged enamel.
A GROUP OF WW11 MEDALS AND KOREA PAIR TO A MAJOR RASC. 1939/45-Africa and Burma Stars, Defence & War medals, Korea Service Medal named to Mjr R W Patterson RASC, UN Korea medal. Mounted for wear with a matching miniature group and badge and buttons (R W Kent blazer buttons). A silver and enamel cased Masonic award of the Rupert Patterson Lodge No 3646. On the reverse is inscribed Presented to Mrs J Rupert Patterson to commemorate the Mastership of her husband as first WM January 1914. Hallmarks for London 1913. A full dress cap badge in enamel and metal for the Royal Army Service Corps. Rupert William Patterson was born on the 13th August 1914, commissioned into the Army on the 21st February 1940. Major on the 13th August 1950, retiring 1/12/1957. Educated at Sherborne School from 1928-32 as a Law Student, son of J R Patterson of Penang. From 1933-37 he was serving in the Royal West Kent Regt. 1937- He served in the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards. In 1934 a 2/Lt R W Patterson was commissioned into the 20th London Regt. War Services 1939-45 shows that he sevred in the ranks for 1 year and 141 days, prior to Emergency Commission 2/Lt 21/2/1940 Serving in the British Expeditionary Force in 1940 he was awarded promotion in the field. War Subst Lt 21/8/1941. Act Captain 25/12/1941 then T/Capt 25/3/1942. Finally Major in 1950. From 1940-42 He served in the Middle East including Abyssinia and Somalia In 1943 He was serving in Ceylon, thence 1944-45 in Burma as an acting Major. Finally in the Korean War with the Royal Army Service Corps, up to his retirement in 1957. He lived in Kenya after this time then latterly in Austria.

The star shaped medal is engraved on the reverse 2nd Bn the Welsh Regt. Sergt's Rifle club class B 1911, Won By Sgt Cottrell. Hallmarks below J.F & Birmingham 1910. A Territorial who was promoted QM/Lt 1st July 1918 into the 10th S Wales Borderers. (Also served in the 15th Battalion SWB. Retired 1920. See Illustration.

A Kings South Africa Medal with bars South Africa 1901 & S Africa 1902, named to 3469 Pte O Cowan S. Lanc. Regt. A 1914 Star and Bar, named to 3031 Pte O Cowan 2/ S:Lanc:R. British War & VIctory Medals, named to 3031 Pte O Cowan S.Lan.R. Oswald Cowan was wounded in the Boer War at Pieters Hill on the 27th February 1900. He later served with his Regiment after he recovered from his wound, returning home to 50 Tweed St, West Derby Rd, Liverpool. He rejoined his Regiment as 3031 attesting at Liverpool, in September 1914, His profession given as Policeman. He served in France from October 1914, He transferred to the Military Police in February 1917. His address upon returning to Civilian Life, is the same as above and latterly 04/10/1938. (MIC) details He is also entitled to a Silver War Badge under List MPC/83. He appears to have been invalided out in 1918, rejoining the Chief Constable Liverpool Police. It would seem he was wounded in both wars, during his services.

He was awarded a 1914/15 Star, placed on Class Z Reserve 18th January 1919. 2. 15016 Pte R H Spearman N Cyclist Ban. The latter mounted for wear with an unnamed Defence Medal (Robert H Spearman) Northern Cyclist Battalion also served in the Northumberland Fusiliers under number 52812. (Dis) on his MIC.

A silver Metropolitan Police 1911 Coronation George V 1911 Medal, named to P C H Coles. A silver heart shaped medal 'Our Dumb Friends League.' A Society for the encouragement of kindness to animals obverse legend. On a bar suspender and red ribbon, with a Horse , Dog etc obverse. Engraved on the reverse 'Awarded to Police Constable Harry Coles. In recognition of His humane work on behalf of animals, during 25 years service in The Metropolitan Police Force May 1916'. W.O.L (maker) and Birmingham 1911 hallmarks. A silver circular medal with 'The Animals Friend' top bar, 1000 cases of cruelty to Horses in 21 years, engraved on the suspender bar. Horses on the obverse, engraved 'Presented to P C H Coles 54XR X Divn Met Police. By a lover of Dumb Animals in recognition of the splendid services rendrd, by him on their behalf, Jan 30th 1911 and A Fenwicke designer. A 1911 GV Coronation medal,named to P. C. E Coles. A Memorial Plaque named to Ronald Arneil. Ronald Arneil the older son of Mr & Mrs William Arneil of 59, Priory Rd, Dunfermline, Scotland. Aged 23 years when he was Killed in Action 14th October 1918, whilst serving in the Royal Engineers 4th Cavalry Division Signalling Sqdn. He had previously also served as 758 Highland Cyclist Battalion, 20275 Army Cyclist Corps and latterly 272695 The Royal Engineers. His Military Medal issued for Bravery in the Field, was on the 14/11/1916 Page 11137 of Gazette 29827. His Mention in Despatches was in the London Gazette 1st December 1916 Page 11808. His younger brother was also to lose his life in the immediate post war months, having joined up although only aged around 16 years old. A 1914/15 Star named to 1048 Gnr D Arneil R G A. British War & Victory Medals named to 2.A.M. D Arneil R A F. A Memorial Plaque named to Douglas Arneil. Douglas Arneil was born in 1899, the younger brother of Ronald, when he enlisted he would have been 15-16 years old, having served in France from the 4th April 1915 with the Fife Royal Garrison Artillery. He was 20 years old when he died in Belgium on the 20th February 1919. He is buried in Charleroi Communal Cemetery. Transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as number 406781 Airman 3rd Class, seniority dating from 5/11/1917. Leading Aircraftsman 306215 when he died. By then his mother was a widow, and had moved to 12 Bonnar Street, Dunfermline . Her late husband William was listed as a Hairdresser, in Bonnar Street. See Illustration

MIC records he served in France from 26/1/1915, later Killed in Action. The son of Ann Rosser (formerly Lewis) and step father Edward Rosser of Ridgeway Bristol.

The British Medical Journal dated 6.6.1942 states 'Squadron Leader Gordon Primrose Smith R A F V R received the OBE (Military Division) in the New Years Honours. His name was missed when the lists were published in January, because his degrees MB. Ch. B .Ed were not included in the official entry in the London Gazette. The London Gazette 8/7/1947. A CMG-QSA-KSA GROUP OF THREE MEDALS TO THE APD. Companion of St Michael & St George, Queens South Africa Medal with bar Cape Colony, Kings South Africa bars 1901 & SA 1902. The latter two medals named to Col G H Moore-Lane CMG APD. The three mounted for wear and contained in a fitted Spinks case, with a buckle mount on the CMG. The ghost dating is very clear on the QSA reverse, both the latter two oficially named in slanting engraved capitals. A matching miniature group, also mounted for wear Colonel George Howard Moore-Lane was born on the 19th October 1844. Paymaster APD from 26/5/1879. Major APD from 26/5/1884 T/Staff Paymaster " 8/5/1889 Staff Paymaster " 1/4/1895 Chief Paymaster " 26/1/1901. Previous Service with 15 & 77 Regt Districts. The son of the late Thomas Moore-Lane of Madras India. Married 1875 Mary T de Courcy, daughter of Admiral M de Courcy RN. Left Southampton on the Persia on Saturday 9th April 1900 for service in South Africa. Mentioned in Despatches LG 10/9/1901 awarded the CMG.
A TFWM GROUP OFFICERS GROUP OF THREE TO THE ROYAL ARTILLERY. A Territorial Force War Medal, British War & Victory Medals, named to 2/Lieut G M Lane (RA) on the TFWM. Commissioned into the R Horse & Field Artillery 2/Lt 26/5/1917. Lt 26/11/1918. Graham Maurice Lane's MIC card makes interesting reading, having originally served as 671 Cpl G M Lane RAMC. He applied for the 1914/15 Star, which was not permitted. He had served in France from December 1917. (1914) crossed out and amended. Issued with his TFWM and pair by the RFA, his rank was stamped on all three .There are three Southampton addresses and Woolwich involved while applying for his medals. Possibly one of the most filled out MIC's, we are likely to see.

Of four piece construction marked Spencer of London and dated 1934-35 Second Master. A boxed silver Serving Brother medal, marks for London 1929, again R Spencer maker. MILITARY & NURSING MEDALS. A group of three medals to Captain G Pinney, in box of issue and complete with slip. 1939/45 Star, Africa Star with bar 8th Army. War Medal. Gerald Pinney 1907-1990 was serving in the Royal Corps of Signals during WW11. A copied photograph shows him on a horse in front of the Egyptian landscape. Also with the medals is his Regular Army Reserve of Officers lapel badge. A Voluntary Service in Nursing silver medal, named to Miss Muriel Graveley. Three further Red Cross Nursing awards with service bars, one named to M M Graveley. Miss Graveley was a Teacher by profession, a Voluntary Red Cross Nurse by choice. A copied photograph of her in uniform is with the medals.
A R NAVY NGS 1915-62 & LSGC GROUP OF FIVE MEDALS. A 1914/15 Star, British war & Victory Medals named to J.28297 A. E Harris . A.B . R.N. A Naval General Service Medal GV1 bar Palestine 1936-39, named to J.28297 A E Harris A.B. R.N. A Long Service Good Conduct Medal GV named to J.28297 A E Harris A.B. R.N HMS Queen Elizabeth. Albert E Harris is listed as serving on HMS Ajax during the Gt War. HMS Ajax was a Battleship of the King George V Class, during the 1914-1919 period, launched around 1913. She was in the Battle of Jutland and was scrapped in 1926. Further research would confirm the ship he was on in Palestine, perhaps if he went onto service in W W 11. He was awarded his Long Service Good Conduct Medal whilst serving on HMS Queen Elizabeth. A Battleship launched just in time for the Gt War, she was the Flag Ship of General Sir Ian Hamilton in the Dardenelles Campaign. After the war she became the Mediterranean Flagship until C1937. Attacked by Italian Frogmen in December 1941 and seriously damaged. Scrapped in 1948. See Illustration

Various documents and ephmera related to Lt Fords service with the 1st Polish Armoured Division in Italy and The D Day landings etc. With this lot is further foreign post war medals and miniature medals/badges etc

(Ernest M Ash) Household Battalion also served in the Coldstream Guards under number 23177 T/Sjt. 2. 1546 Tpr S Whitehead Household B. (Samuel Whitehead) also served in the APD under number 8799. Famous for their action at Poelcapelle, where of the 498 Officers and Men who started the Battle, 361 became casualties.
