The important group of orders and medals to Sir William Smart K.C.B., Naval Surgeon and latterly Honorary Physician to Queen Victoria, comprising: K.C.B. military division Star, gold Neck Badge (marked for Garrards 1876) and sash, Crimea Medal with Sebastopol clasp loose on ribbon, 2nd China War Medal, Turkish Crimea Medal (French issue, fitted with scroll suspension), French Legion d’ Honneur, all medals unnamed as issued, with a mounted set of miniatures; offered together with an extensive collection of documents including warrants and correspondence, and a later painted portrait of the recipient. Sir William Smart (1817-87) entered the navy as a Surgeon in 1841 and was promoted to Staff Surgeon in 1850. Qualified as M.D. (Aberdeen University, 1853) and M.R.C.P. (London, 1860), and appointed Deputy Inspector General of [Naval] Hospitals in 1858. Made Inspector General in 1869 and placed in charge of Haslar Hospital, Gosport, from April 1873 until his retirement in Nov. 1877. Served in the Chinese Wars of 1842 and 1857 (medal) and in the Crimean War, 1854-55 (medal & clasp, Turkish medal & French L. d’H.). Honorary Physician to Queen Victoria from Nov. 1876 and made KCB in June 1877 (previously CB, 1867). This recipient was also awarded the Gilbert Blane medal (not present with group). Appears of the roll for China 1842, indicating that the 2nd China War Medal may be an exchange or replacement. With copy research.
