A Vickers Sons & Maxim Ltd silver medal, ‘To Employees of 30 Years Service and to Commemorate the Visit of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra to Sheffield July 12th 1905’, engraved to Philip Moore June 1856, hallmarked for Birmingham 1906; together with an On War Service 1915 lapel badge. (2)
The important group of orders and medals to Sir William Smart K.C.B., Naval Surgeon and latterly Honorary Physician to Queen Victoria, comprising: K.C.B. military division Star, gold Neck Badge (marked for Garrards 1876) and sash, Crimea Medal with Sebastopol clasp loose on ribbon, 2nd China War Medal, Turkish Crimea Medal (French issue, fitted with scroll suspension), French Legion d’ Honneur, all medals unnamed as issued, with a mounted set of miniatures; offered together with an extensive collection of documents including warrants and correspondence, and a later painted portrait of the recipient. Sir William Smart (1817-87) entered the navy as a Surgeon in 1841 and was promoted to Staff Surgeon in 1850. Qualified as M.D. (Aberdeen University, 1853) and M.R.C.P. (London, 1860), and appointed Deputy Inspector General of [Naval] Hospitals in 1858. Made Inspector General in 1869 and placed in charge of Haslar Hospital, Gosport, from April 1873 until his retirement in Nov. 1877. Served in the Chinese Wars of 1842 and 1857 (medal) and in the Crimean War, 1854-55 (medal & clasp, Turkish medal & French L. d’H.). Honorary Physician to Queen Victoria from Nov. 1876 and made KCB in June 1877 (previously CB, 1867). This recipient was also awarded the Gilbert Blane medal (not present with group). Appears of the roll for China 1842, indicating that the 2nd China War Medal may be an exchange or replacement. With copy research.
A group of six medals to 94738 Bombadier W.C. Hawker R.A., India Medal (81935 Dv 50th [?] By. R.A.) with clasp for Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Queen’s South Africa Medal (81935 Dvr U. Bty. R.H.A.) with clasps for Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Dreifontein and Transvaal, King’s South Africa Medal with usual two clasps, 1914 Star and bar (94738 Gnr. R.F.A.) British War Medal and Victory Medal (BMBR R.A.), mounted for wearing; with a ribbon bar and a quantity of good associated ephemera.
A rare 15ct gold Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire Rugby Football Union Challenge medal inscribed to the reverse "Winners 1904-5 Warrington F.C. J.W. Harmer", hallmarked London 1904, height 3cm, approx 23.6g. CONDITION REPORT: Suspension loop bent, top left scroll bent, badly dinted and scuffed, traces of enamel to front.
