A PAIR OF 19TH-CENTURY MILITARY BINOCULARS with wine morocco covering, brass-mounted, engraved "R.H.D", and "17, Regt" (Royal Leicestershire Regiment) ***A Major Richard Horwood Dunnings was serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Leicestershire Regiment (formerly 17th Foot) in 1881; he was commissioned as Ensign 5 March 1861, Lieutenant 26 April 1864, Captain 5 July, 1873. He served in Canada and was entitled to the Canadian General Service Medal with Clasp Fenian Raid. Born in Devon, he was recorded in the census of 2 April, 1871 at Aldershot, aged 32 years. With great courage, under very heavy fire both from his front and flank, he succeeded in working round to the rear of the enemy, and discovering their dispositions. The information thus obtained enabled the machine guns to be dealt with and the final objective to be reached.
