TARRANT, 1832; Marriage Certificate, 13th July, 1858, between Edmund Tarrant (son of William Tarrant, Boatswain, Royal Navy) and Aramenta Stevenson ; Commission, 8st July 1865, with Seniority from 1st July, 1865, appointing Edward Tarrant, Gunner First Class in Her Majesty's Fleet; with comprehensive copy of typed history, compiled from Admiralty Records, of Boatswain William Tarrant R.N., 1780-1855, dated July 1979 which records Tarrant's father Charles as a Surgeon; William's Naval Career began as a volunteer on 25th April 1803 with two weeks on H.M.S. Utrecht before transfer on 11th May to H.M.S. Victory; he was appointed Quarter Gunner, 1st June 1804, and served in this capacity at the battle of Trafalgar; it is stated in the account that William's third finger of his right hand was disabled at the battle and it is also believed that he was wounded in the neck; his continuing Naval Career is detailed in the account; Greenwich Hospital School records several letters from William dating from 17th May 1829, when he was Boatswain on H.M.S. Hyperion regarding the Admission of his son Charles; Charles was admitted on 16th January 1830 and discharged in 1832

Provenance: This collection of items is offered for sale by the family of Donald Ball, a 2nd WW RAF pilot whose brother Eric (Squadron Leader Eric Ball DFC with bar) flew with Douglas Bader in 242 squadron and died in 1946 in a flying accident testing a jet fighter. Though it is not known who these medals were actually issued to, it is recalled that the gold Sweetheart brooch was worn by Donald and Eric`s mother.
