Exhibition of Irish Art and Manufactures gold award medal, 1882.Obverse: A recumbant blacksmith being aided to his feet by a female figure, 'Self Reliance' and 'Labor Omnia Vincit' (Work Conquers All). DixonOther Notes: 289 medals were awarded to participants in the Dublin Exhibition 1882. The bulk of these were bronze, however the recepient of a major award in a section was entitled to have it struck in gold at their own expense (£10). Additionally there were eight gold medals, one presented by the Exhibition Board, five by Sir John Arnott and two by Messers Cash and Co. Martin Mahony and Bros. Ltd received four medals in section XII, Class C (Textiles), two being those sponsored by Cash and Co.In 1750 Timothy Mahony established a small textile mill in Blarney, Co. Cork. His grandson Martin Mahony expanded the business and built a modern mill on the site in 1824. This mill was destroyed by fire in 1869. The building which was built to replace it had an additional two floors to accommodate the Mahony's expanding business. The business survived until 1973 when it closed due to competition from cheaper synthetic textiles. In 1975 the mill was bought by Christy Kelleher, a former employee, who established Blarney Wollen Mills. The company he established continues to trade from the mill built by Mahony in 1870.

Football 1945-46 Dublin City Cup, winner's medal to Cork United.A 9ct gold shield-shaped medal with the arms of the four Provinces bordered by 'Football League of Ireland', engraved verso, 'D.C.C. - Winnersn - Cork Utd. - 1945-'46' A rare medal to a short-lived but very successful club team. Dublin, 1946, maker's mark for Hopkins and Hopkins. 9.8g. Other Notes: Cork United was formed in February 1940 upon the dissolution of Cork City. Based in The Mardyke, the new club enjoyed a golden age in the early 1940s, winning five league titles, before disbanding and resigning from the league on 10 October 1948. Another new club, Cork Athletic was immediately formed to take its place.

G McDermott S Lan R (South Lancashire Regiment); and an RAF Service and Release Book to Sergeant James McDermott, who flew 34 operational missions as an air gunner over France and Germany between 1943 and 1945.

1915 (7 May) British propaganda medal to commemorate the sinking of RMS Lusitania, with a 1914-1918 Mercantile Marine medalThe famous medal, purporting to have been issued originally in Germany to celebrate the sinking of the Lusitania but actually all were made in England as a propaganda exercise. Accompanied by interesting correspondence from and to Fred Dixon in the 1960s, as well as relevant clippings from newspapers and magazines. Also with this lot a Mercantile Marine Medal to Robert Tracey, who is not listed as crew of the Lusitania. Provenance: Collection of FE Dixon.
1918 (10 October) Trio to North Irish Horse private, drowned on RMS Leinster.1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-1918 and British Victory Medal officially inscribed to 1459 Pte S Shiels N. IR. H.; together with copies of War Office service records and of the hand-written Telegram Form notifying Shiels' family of his loss on board the SS Leinster. Other Notes: RMS Leinster served as the Kingstown-Holyhead mailboat until she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-123 on 10 October 1918, while bound for Holyhead. She went down just outside Dublin Bay at a point 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) east of the Kish light. Over 500 people perished in the sinking – the greatest single loss of life in the Irish Sea.
1916 Rising Service Medal to a member of the GPO garrison.Awarded to Michael Giffney, IRA Dublin Brigade, 2nd Battalion, F Company (Fairview), who initially served at Clonliffe Road and Portland Row on Easter Monday and then was in the GPO for the remainder of the Rising. He was wonded by a ricochet bullet in Henry Place. He was treated in Dublin Castle. He was interned in Kilmainham and Stafford jails and Frongoch Camp (Prisoner 1533, Hut 17). Copies of his service record accompany the medal. Also included is the original box of issue, President's compliment slip, Department of Defence letter with flash, and original Award of Pension certificate issued in 1935. A rare fully provenanced 1916 medal to a member of the GPO garrison. Provenance: Recipient;Thence to his son.
